If anyone has Shotime, check out the new documentary on the Go-Go's. What a great friggin' band! I had their first three albums and still listen to them regularly. There are a bunch of shows up on Sugarmegs.org, some from their late 70s punk days. Here's a high quality taping: http://ia800300.us.archive.org/6/items/GoGos1982-06-19HakanoPlazaTokyoJa...
To this day they are the only all female act to hit #1, playing their own instruments and writing their own songs and music. It's crazy to think that it hadn't been done before, and hasn't been done since. They were opening for the Police on tour, and their album went #1, surpassing the Police. They definitely weren't some bubblegum pop band.
Their new single, Club Zero, is really good.

This is not true. Both Eternal Flame and Walking Down Your Street by The Bangles also hit # 1 on the Billboard charts and Susanna Hoffs co-wrote those. I am not taking anything away from The Go-Go's. They are a seriously talented bunch of musicians that have been a bit underappreciated for their talent. The same can be said for The Bangles, who in my opinion were better musicians and better on stage. Unfortunately both bands are victims of sexism in music...They were pretty good for girls. Ugh.
I'm plan on watching the Go-Go's documentary soon and will then call my buddy who was their tour merch manager in their heyday. He has great stories and it will be fun to hear his take on the documentary.

The Runaways should have had
The Runaways should have had a #1 hit with "Cherry Bomb".
The Go-Go's and The Bangles were both super-talented bands with great Pop instincts. The next wave of all-women groups to experience some success coincided with the Grunge era with the Riot Grrrl bands Bikini Kill and Team Dresch. There are some pretty solid all-women bands still happening. Indie-Rock darlings Sleater-Kinney and Garage-Rock/Pop-Punk band The Donnas have kept making solid records. My sister's Goddaughter Lydia plays guitar in Chastity Belt, a Seattle group of women who have put a couple of albums out on Sub Pop's Hardly Art subsidiary. They have toured Europe a couple of times now and worked several shows as support act for Modest Mouse.

I remember listening
I remember listening endlessly to the Go Go's first album in 1981. They definitely had some kind of pop-newwave/punk thing going, even though some saw them as sellouts.
Seems like they run down the usual checklist on how a band rises and falls (and rises again): money, drugs, fame, egos (not necessarily in that order).
Yes, there are some great rockin' young all women bands still happening, like Habibi, from NYC,
and a personal new favorite, La Luz, from L.A., via Seattle. Surf-y psych rock with lush Moody Blues-ish harmonies:
