Knock Knock. Who's There? DHS. Open the Door!

Forums:

(This could go in the Portland thread, but it relates to the entire country.)

Trump just found his Constitutional scholar to validate martial law: John Yoo (the torture memo guy).

In a June article in the National Review, he wrote that a supreme court decision that blocked Trump’s attempt to repeal Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals programme, known as Daca and established by executive order, meant Trump could do the same thing to achieve his policy goals.

“The supreme court has said President Obama could [choose not to] enforce immigration laws for about 2 million cases. And why can’t the Trump administration do something similar with immigration – create its own … program, but it could do it in areas beyond that, like healthcare, tax policy, criminal justice, inner city policy. I talked to them a fair amount about cities, because of the disorder.”

In a Fox News Sunday interview, Trump declared he would try to use that interpretation to try to force through decrees on healthcare, immigration and “various other plans” over the coming month. The White House.

Constitutional scholars and human rights activists have also pointed to the deployment of paramilitary federal forces against protesters in Portland as a sign that Trump is ready to use this broad interpretation of presidential powers as a means to suppress basic constitutional rights.

“This is how it begins,” Laurence Tribe, a Harvard constitutional law professor, wrote on Twitter. “The dictatorial hunger for power is insatiable. If ever there was a time for peaceful civil disobedience, that time is upon us.”

Yoo asshole!

acting Homeland Security Deputy Secretary Ken Cuccinelli

CUCCINELLI: And a much unheard of - a much unknown agency, the Federal Protective Service, is responsible for protecting thousands around the country. That is an agency within the Department of Homeland Security. And the CBP agents that you saw backing them up are doing just that. They are there cross designated to support FPS, not the other way around. We're helping them do their job because of the demand for more manpower in light of the violence.

MCCAMMON: What is the legal justification, though, for federal agents - not local officers - making arrests away from federal property?

CUCCINELLI: The legal justification is that they are people suspected of damaging or attacking federal personnel or property. That's the justification. That's the basis for jurisdiction......We will pick them up in front of the courthouse. If we spot them elsewhere, we will pick them up elsewhere. And if we have a question about somebody's identity - like the first example I noted to you - after questioning determine it isn't someone of interest, then they get released.

What is the goal of picking up some people?

^to frighten, intimidate, and silence dissent. This is how fascist regimes behave

interesting.

liberals should be ok w/ yoo, as they're now ok w/ W.

Litigation has begun.

You're very good at telling people what they believe, and what they should believe, Pyramid. I guess it makes it easier for you argue.

nope.

it's just what i see -- liberals so desperate that they're yearning for the days of W where the fed could just go ahead and start wars w/o too much commotion in the streets, as opposed to trumps loud and sloppy style.

they're all war criminals.

>liberals so desperate that they're yearning for the days of W where the fed could just go ahead and start wars w/o too much commotion in the streets, as opposed to trumps loud and sloppy <

You just did it again, Pyramid.

Wars? The people in the street are protesting many things, but primary it's systemic racism and police brutality.  Haven't noticed antiwar protests. Maybe I missed it?

What else do moderates and liberals believe?

Please tell me what I believe.

you believe voting for the lesser of two evils.

you've stated that.

W didn't start wars?

strange.

Ogkb, I'm in no way putting you down. You're an ideologue. As a result, anybody who has views differing from your ideology is kind of the enemy. I'm not putting words in your mouth here. It's what you've said, over and over.

It's totally cool that those are your beliefs. It just makes it hard to have a political discussion. You tend to see it as black and white, while others see a lot of gray area and nuance. Many people here believe in much of what you do, yet they differ on other points. It doesn't make them the enemy.

<W didn't start wars?<

There you go again. I did not write that, nor infer it.

Sure W started wars, and Obama continued them. People were out in the streets protesting W, but not so much with Obama. Heck, Trump's been bombing the hell out of the world, but he doesn't get much blow back either. Most care only when US personnel die.

Yes, I'm voting for Biden. I would have voted for any of the 20+ Democrats who ran. I feel that Trump is an existential threat to the country, and the world.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Monday, Trump threatened to extend the deployment of federal agents to other areas of the country. “I’m going to do something — that, I can tell you,” he said. “Because we’re not going to let New York and Chicago and Philadelphia and Detroit and Baltimore and all of these — Oakland is a mess. We’re not going to let this happen in our country. All run by liberal Democrats.” According to the Times, DHS has placed around 2,000 officials from its various agencies on standby if Trump follows through on his orders.

WALLACE: But you’ve been in office three and a half years, you don’t have a plan.

TRUMP: Well, we haven’t had. Excuse me. You heard me yesterday. We’re signing a health-care plan within two weeks, a full and complete health-care plan that the Supreme Court decision on DACA gave me the right to do.

This bizarre statement blends together three implausible claims. First, Trump is referring to a radical conservative legal analysis that claims, almost certainly incorrectly, that a recent Supreme Court ruling gives him leeway to refuse to enforce existing laws. Second, he appears to be transposing the logic to health care, promising somehow that his newfound power to ignore laws will allow him to create a new health-care law, as if nonenforcement of the law and the creation of a new law are the same thing. And third, he promises to “sign” this “new law” within two weeks. This is a long-standing pattern of Trump promising to do things that never happen in “two weeks.”https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/07/trump-interview-chris-wallace-co...

>>>>>>> DHS has placed around 2,000 officials from its various agencies on standby if Trump follows through on his orders.

2000 people are going to strong arm the entire country?

How many Oregonians have been abducted so far?

All good questions Slack.

One thing to consider --- all it takes is cable tv to televise one small incident over and over and over again, and it makes it seem like the whole Country is in danger. In no time at all, broccoli farmers 3000 miles away are arming themselves from imagined mobs of vicious liberal vegetarians --- vegans even --- and demanding law and order.

In other words -- it's made for tv programming. But it's effective.

>> You're very good at telling people what they believe, and what they should believe, Pyramid. I guess it makes it easier for you argue. <<

>> nope. <<

Actually, it's YEP. It's a tool in your toolbag.

I have asked you multiple times to ask me what I think, instead of telling me (and everyone else) what I think.

This is a super-long article about the Department of Homeland Security and how it could be improved from a seemingly impartial think tank.*  It's worth it to skim it at least (some parts are boring), as  DHS is now the largest federal law enforcement agency in the country. I guess it's good to know this stuff.

It was set up in 2002 for foreign terrorist threats and has apparently become the FEMA of federal police domestically (which is prohibited by the Constitution) under the direction of political appointees, without much Congressional oversight.

"...That makes the secretary of Homeland Security the federal law enforcement executive with leadership over the greatest number of federal law enforcement officers, with oversight and management responsibilities larger in quantity and far different in operational scope than the FBI director or the attorney general of the United States."

* The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) is an independent, bipartisan, nonprofit organization that develops strong, pragmatic, and principled national security and defense policies. (I have no idea if it is a Russian or Chinese front.)

Good luck pyramid

I hope you don't spend your entire life in self induced delusions and suffering

Fascists Bad OK?

white nationalism is trumps pitch

>>> thanks man. you're old, right? maybe a couple decades left at most?

This is where I see a disconnect. Those of us who are old are not here on this earth only for ourselves. Not only do you matter, but closer to home, my children (who are older than you are) and grandchildren will still be around. Don't we want the best for all of you? When you say "standard of living" I assume you're not talking only about economics but the air, earth, trees, water, ability to grow food and breathe too. Right? So we all have to work on it. Together, putting ageism aside.

So many of us have creative ideas and energy to contribute. Bernie Sanders is not the only wise elder. And never forget the work that Jimmy Carter is doing. Now, at 95, because he cares.

your centrism is destroying the country -- i'm sorry you're too blond to see it.

gold has turned to gray

youth has fade away

no one will care about you when you're old and in the way.

All interest is self-interest.

>> and i have asked you why you spread lies about bernie policy. that was a big tool in your toolbox, for months.  <<

LOL name one lie I said about Bernie. You seemed offended when I said "Bernie is Toast", but it wasn't a lie, was it?

Just an FYI - I have no idea what you guys are arguing about any more... socialism vs capitalism? centrist vs extremest?  Bernie vs Hillary vs Biden vs Trump?  I'm lost. I could use some clarification in a brief sentence what your respective positions are.

No way OKGB has five decades left if he keeps stressing so hard all the time and clogging his arteries with pizza.  That's a recipe for stroking out by Sixty.

i have like 5 decades left, so your generation doing as little damage as possible is essential to my standard of living.

you get to fuck off soon.

i don't.

I would imagine the folks who can afford a $50 pizza are the most essential to your standard of living.

What an entitled asshole.

Tells people to hurry up and die.

That's really disgusting behavior, captain slander.

You don't know shit, so you make up slander and lies.

Fuck off ya slug.

Heater, I'll take that as a no.  I feel bad for your older employee.  He must have to listen to your rants all day about Medicare for all and then you shiest him out of healthcare because of your own greed.

SHAMEFUL.
