Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) is now visible before sunrise in the eastern skies... Should be easy to find with binoculars, with the possibility it'll brighten up enough to be easily seen with the naked eye in coming days!
Ok, so I was outside just before dawn and could not see it. My view was partially blocked though so... But what I did see, up and a little to the right of where I thought the comet would show, was a super bright planet(?). My first guess was Venus. It was so much brighter than anything else.
>>>>>Any other year I would say cool, but are we sure it isn't going to hit us?
By Virginia Langmaid and Judson Jones, CNN :
In case you wondered, the comet does not pose any danger to the planet and will pass by harmlessly.
Part of the NEOWISE satellite operations is to help researchers distinguish between near-earth objects with dangerous orbits (potentially hazardous asteroids, or PHAs), and those that are not a threat, according to NASA. Its infrared lens allows it to see comets particularly well, as they are commonly darker objects in the night sky, says Battams.
Finally had a clear morning, and I could clearly see the comet in the NNE sky, but with the weak cold front moving in, valley haze, and a near full moon, wasn't able to take a pic...
I was up at 5 am and went outside to look. Very bright object in the sky. It was undefined with binocs and didn't have a tail but that might be because it was getting light out.
I got up early and saw it in the NNE sky a few mornings ago... was a lot farther north than I expected, watching Venus rise was cool, it was fairly close to due east, and the stars in "Auriga" were also clearly visible north of venus, but the comet was quite a ways north of Auriga when it rose... but now it's becoming a sunset fixture, be a lot easier for me to look for, as I hate mornings, LOL
I'm glad it'll be getting higher in the sunset sky, instead of hugging the morning horizon, hopefully make for an excellent show (and the 2 tails are getting longer as well, one particle following the comets path, the other an ion trail from the solar wind)
Comet Neowise rising over Bryce Canyon
Taken by Jeff Zylland on July 12, 2020 @ Bryce Canyon, UT
I tried to catch it after sunset tonight with no luck, though there was a fuzzy area that might have been it, was much more obvious before sunrise the other day.... but didn't have time to hang out waiting for it to get darker tonight.
I saw it in the sunset sky tonight, kind of cool to see it in the morning and then the evening just a few days apart... clouds kind of interfered a bit, and my attempts at photography failed miserably, but i've just got one of those small canon hand cameras, so no complaints... hopefully it'll get brighter and easier to see as it rises in the sky the rest of this month
To see the comet now in the pm, start looking about half an hour after sunset, just below the Big Dipper, over the northwest horizon as the last of twilight fades into darkness
I couldn't see it until after 10pm last night, but there were some high clouds in that area... but seems like both times i've seen it (AM and now PM skies), it was farther north than what the maps showed... tonight i'm going to drive south of town to some open farmland around 9:45 pm....
Got a good view of it tonight, definitely brighter than last night, could even see it in town... but unable to get a pic w/ my cheesy camera, lol
Amazing how fast it moves north along the horizon while we were watching, Joan brought her fancy camera, and it was moving within the frame pretty quickly
The sky charts above still work, but it'll be moving north, and my sightings have always started north of what the maps have. So currently it's below and to the right of the big dipper.
I've been having the best luck spotting after 10pm local time, but need binoculars to find it, once found, can see with the naked eye (by 10:30 it was much easier to see)
Fantastic viewing in Ct last nite. Skies clear as a bell which has been rare this summer. Amazing how fast it moved north. Got 1st good glimpse about 9:30 directly below the Big Dipper just above the horizon. It appeared to us to be directly above the spot where the sun went down. By 9:45 it was perfect, ice ball with that long fat tail with stars behind it moving north farther away from us at a good clip. Amazing and impressive. By the time the space station came by at 10:05, the sun had set so much it was hardly visible. The space station dragging that dragon capsul was also pretty fuckin awe inspiring last night, a 6 min flyby. Ditto on the shitty camera.
Space X launching the Starship by way of the falcon heavy rocket real soon. Somewhere Paul Kantner is smiling.
Some beautiful photos from the Dee Wright Observatory in the lava fields, Old McKenzie Hwy, Oregon Cascades taken by an old acquaintance, Chris Pietsch. Also a few others, mostly U.S.
Sky map for the 20th... sounds like the comet itself is starting to dim, but the tail is getting larger and still visible with the naked eye. Should be fun viewing as it climbs even higher into the darkness
