Did CrowdStrike have proof that Russia hacked the DNC? 

Yes, and this is also supported by the U.S. Intelligence community and independent Congressional reports.

Following a comprehensive investigation that CrowdStrike detailed publicly, the company concluded in May 2016 that two separate Russian intelligence-affiliated adversaries breached the DNC network.

To reference, CrowdStrike’s account of their DNC investigation, published on June 14, 2016, “CrowdStrike Services Inc., our Incident Response group, was called by the Democratic National Committee (DNC), the formal governing body for the US Democratic Party, to respond to a suspected breach. We deployed our IR team and technology and immediately identified two sophisticated adversaries on the network – COZY BEAR and FANCY BEAR…. At DNC, COZY BEAR intrusion has been identified going back to summer of 2015, while FANCY BEAR separately breached the network in April 2016.”

This conclusion has most recently been supported by the Senate Intelligence Committee in April 2020 issuing a report [intelligence.senate.gov] validating the previous conclusions of the Intelligence community, published on January 6, 2017,  that Russia was behind the DNC data breach.

The Senate report states on page 48:

“The Committee found that specific intelligence as well as open source assessments support the assessment that President Putin approved and directed aspects of this influence campaign.”

Furthermore, in his testimony in front of the House Intelligence Committee, Shawn Henry stated the following with regards to CrowdStrike’s degree of confidence that the intrusion activity can be attributed to Russia, cited from page 24:

HENRY: We said that we had a high degree of confidence it was the Russian Government.  And our analysts that looked at it and that had looked at these types of attacks before, many different types of attacks similar to this in different environments, certain tools that were used, certain methods by which they were moving in the environment,and looking at the types of data that was being targeted, that it was consistent with a nation-state adversary and associated with Russian intelligence. 

Have any other organizations concluded that Russia was behind the DNC hack?

Yes. CrowdStrike’s conclusion that Russia was behind the DNC hack is supported by the U.S. Intelligence community and also by independent Congressional reports. Most recently, the Senate Intelligence Committee released a report in April 2020 that validated the previous conclusions of the Intelligence Community Assessment, published on January 6, 2017, all concluding that Russia was behind the DNC data breach.

Page 157 of the Senate report states that the Select Committee on Intelligence “conducted an extensive examination of the intelligence demonstrating Russia’s intrusions into DNC networks.“ Senator Richard Burr (R – North Carolina), who served as Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee at the time the report was issued, confirmed this finding: “The Committee found no reason to dispute the Intelligence Community’s conclusions.”

The Intelligence Community Assessment, published on January 6, 2017 also confirms that Russia was behind the DNC hack, stating on page 2 of the report: “In July 2015, Russian intelligence gained access to Democratic National Committee (DNC) networks and maintained that access until at least June 2016. This unclassified ODNI report was based on extensive classified intelligence collected by the CIA, NSA, and FBI; the ODNI determined the classified intelligence should not be released in order to protect the sensitive sources and methods by which it was collected.

It’s also worth noting that other security companies, including Fidelis and FireEye have supported CrowdStrike’s analysis.

Does CrowdStrike have evidence that data was exfiltrated from the DNC network?

Yes. Shawn Henry stated in his testimony to the House Intelligence Committee that CrowdStrike had indicators of exfiltration (page 32)  and that data had clearly left the network. Also, on page 2, theIntelligence Community Assessment also confirmed that the Russian intelligence agency GRU “had exfiltrated large volumes of data from the DNC.”>>

The 2016 Democratic National Committee email leak is a collection of Democratic National Committee (DNC) emails stolen by one or more hackers operating under the pseudonym "Guccifer 2.0" who are alleged to be Russian intelligence agency hackers, according to indictments carried out by the Mueller investigation.  These emails were subsequently published (leaked) by DCLeaks in June and July 2016[2] and by WikiLeaks on July 22, 2016, just before the 2016 Democratic National Convention. This collection included 19,252 emails and 8,034 attachments from the DNC, the governing body of the United States' Democratic Party. The leak includes emails from seven key DNC staff members, and date from January 2015 to May 2016.   On November 6, 2016, WikiLeaks released a second batch of DNC emails, adding 8,263 emails to its collection.

On December 9, 2016, the CIA told U.S. legislators that the U.S. Intelligence Community concluded Russia conducted operations during the 2016 U.S. election to prevent Hillary Clinton from winning the presidency.  Multiple U.S intelligence agencies concluded people with direct ties to the Kremlin gave WikiLeaks hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee.nnWikiLeaks did not reveal its source. Later Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks, claimed that the source of the emails was not Russia.

In June 2017, former Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, who was appointed by and served under President Barack Obama, testified before a House Select committee that his department offered their assistance to the DNC during the campaign to determine what happened to their server, but said his efforts were "rebuffed" because the DHS was offering to provide assistance months after the FBI had provided assistance.

On July 13, 2018, Special Counsel Robert Mueller indicted 12 Russian military intelligenceagents of a group known as Fancy Bear alleged to be responsible for the attack, who were behind the Guccifer 2.0 pseudonym which claimed responsibility.

Isn't Tucker Carlson taking a vacation, days after a writer on his program, Blake Neff, resigned over racist, sexist and misogynist messages that Mr. Neff published pseudonymously on an online message board.  “What Blake wrote anonymously was wrong,” Tucker told viewers. “We don’t endorse those words. They have no connection to the show. It is wrong to attack people for qualities they cannot control.” He went on to describe Mr. Neff as “horrified” and “ashamed” by the revelation of his online writing. He also said that that Mr. Neff “has paid a very heavy price."

MR. Henry; Remediation is essentially cleaning it up. something bad has happened. There's been an actor. There's malware, malicious software in an environment. Somebody has access to what's occurring in the environment. so the remediation is cleaning out the bad stuff and putting in place infrastructure that is safe and secure.

MR. STEWART of UTAH: okay. so you were saying that generally, they - the FBI doesn't do remediation, but _

MR. Henry: They often collect intelligence that's of value to the broader Intelligence Community.

MR. HENRY: so let me -- yes, but let me clarify, if I could. when we say "the DNC," my understanding is there was a contractor who was administering the network for the DNC, and he was the one that had been contacted by the FBI for months leading up to the phone call that I got from Michael Sussmann.

MR. STEWART OF UTAH: Okay.

MR. HENRY: so when I -- I want to be clear. when I say the DNC, he wasn't a DNC employee. He was a contractor that was administering the network for the DNC. MR. STEWART OF UTAH: All right. So I want to make sure I understand this' So DNC exists. They have a network. They have a contractor providing security for that network. That contractor is notified by the FBI that there's been a breach and that they believe the breach occurred, or a hack, by the Russian Government.

MR. HENRY: So the -- so the term that the contractor - the contractor said that the FBI told him the Dukes, D-u-k-e-s, was identified. I don't know if the contractor knew that the Dukes were associated with the Russian Government.

MR. STEWART of UTAH: Is that a common term, the Dukes?

MR. HENRY: lt's a -- oftentimes, adversaries are given a code name or some type of a reference, and that people in the industry become familiar with the nomenclature. And the Dukes is a common term associated with an actor that many people who work this type of - do this type of work in the private sector refer to that Russian actor as.

MR. STEWART of UTAH: okay. so it's not just the FBI or just your office. I mean, someone who worked professionally __

MR. HENRY: So we did - we did some forensic analysis in the environment. we deployed technology into the environment' into the network' software called Falcon that essentially looks at the processes that are running on different computers in the environment' we also looked historically at the environment, using a different piece of software to look backwards at what was happening in the environment.  And we saw activity that we believed was consistent with activity We'd seen previously and had associated with the Russian Government. 

MR. STEWART oF UTAH: And can you identify that as being -- with a fair degree of confidence that it's associated with the Russian Government?

MR. HENRY: We said that we had a high degree of confidence it was the Russian Government.  And our analyst had looked at it that had looked at these types of attacks before, many different types of attacks similar to this in different environments, certain tools that were used, certain methods by which they were moving in the environment, and looking at the types of data that was being targeted, that it was consistent with a nation-state adversary and associated with Russian intelligence.
