Anybody been to Elko NV

Forums:

Is it worth the drive from Vegas? Always kinda wanted to go there. Looks like nice nature and mountains. Can you drive up into the mountains? I probably won't decide until I get to Vegas as to where I'm first headed. Either north towards Oregon or west towards L.A. where I used to live and visit old haunts like my Elementary school and houses we lived in for photos and then head up north from there along the coast and then hit the Sierras and Yosemite on the way back to Vegas. My father still has some desert property in the Mojave. 8 acres he's had for almost 50 years. Might be cool to find the exact location of it and take some photos.I remember visiting in my youth and lot's of scrub bushes and tumbleweeds and a roadrunner or 2!

Lots of commercial gold mining in the Elko area (rumors of fist sized green garnets at some mystery spot).

Was interesting to find out that Winnemucca is a Basque town, if you're into Basque food.

I've gone opal digging in Virgin Valley near Denio.  Warm springs in one of the "V" branches, with cold springs in the other...  no water in the region otherwise, so lots of wild horses and burros out there.  The opal is expensive to dig, but unearthed several pounds of it when I went 20 some odd years ago (Royal Peacock opal mine and Rainbow Ridge, a 3rd mine we just visited)

Pretty sure I've been to Elko, I may have gambled in a card room there, I have a pretty cool Elko story...my sister and I sent my parents to San Francisco for their 40th Anniversary, one of the highlights of the trip was an evening at the Fillmore for a Railroad Earth CD release party of "Elko", many of the concert goers were dressed in full costume of classic "frontier era" western attire, it was a night to be remembered!

Yes, the star is the good local basque stop in elko, and the Martin hotel in winnemucca. My advice is to find a way to take the long way into or out of elko via spring creek and the ruby mountains. Some of the most beautiful scenery in the lower 48 there, and not many people ever see it. Lamoille canyon, south fork, ruby valley / lake, jiggs, all very interesting and rare spots. Not too much interesting going on in elko proper. This is Humboldt-Toyiabe National forest area. This is the ancestral home of Western Shoshone people.

another real interesting jaunt to/from is via Dixie valley and jersey valleys, which run north-south between highways 50 and 80, from around middlegate to battle mountain. This is hwy 121 on maps. For real no mans land. Suspended animation.

Not interested in mining. Just wonder if it's worth the drive from Vegas. I imagine monotonous flat, scrub desert the whole way. If so fuggedaboutit!

Railroad Earth formerly From Good Homes from Sparta NJ about 18 miles from where I live now.

@Mice elf that's the kind of route I really dig. Could you possible give the exact directions of that route. If I do it I will certainly post a blog with pics here.

I could probably pull some strings and get you a tee time at the TPC, let me know, if your main focus is a road trip to Elko, check this out...

I stayed a night with my family in Elko every summer of my life until I was 15, on our way to spend a month in York Nebraska, where my mother was from.

I was just a kid, but my recollections are that it was blazing hot and my brother & I loved the pool at the motel.

That was MANY years ago and it was fine to pass THROUGH, but I can't think of there being any reason at all to travel TO Elko.

YMMV.

Are you taking your daughter on this adventure, James? Bonding is cool. yes

Bryan, set my tea time at 16:30 hours and make sure they have scones, strawberry's and cream.  I like Da-Hong Pao tea!

The help is much appreciated
