Like Santa Claus, Trump has somehow managed to come through with lots of things on the GOP wish list, like a huge corporate tax break, widespread roll back on government regulations, and hundreds of conservative judges packing all levels of the federal court system.   They aren't going to roll over and forfeit the election because Trump says a lot of stupid and offensive things.   I am sure they all want him to stop tweeting, but ultimately they have cast their lot for another four years of this clown and are keeping their fingers crossed that Biden trips over himself at the debates or there is some October surprise that tilts the election in Trump's favor.   Even with all his missteps, fuck ups, and the outrageous tweets du jour, Trump still has a loyal base of around 40% of the population and is actually polling better than Carter or Bush I were doing before the 1980 and 1992 general elections.  Of course, both went on to lose, but nobody every considered having them throw in the towel.

At this point I'm sure many Republicans in power would LOVE to see the Lunatic-in-chief gone. 

They probably figure that against the doddering Biden, Pence would easily hold the knuckle-draggers & Christian zealot base and also hang onto quite a few votes they'll otherwise lose from intelligent conservatives who just can't tolerate more of the unhinged madness of Trump, but IMO anybody who thinks the Orange One would step down or bow out must not have been paying attention AT ALL the past three years.

Trump isn't going to step aside for anyone, for any reason. It's a real question if he'll leave voluntarily if he loses the election.

Biden still ahead in some swing states but November is still four months away and the guy will likely hang on to his core 40% base regardless of what happens.

He did not. The polls were pretty spot-on. He lost by a bit more than 2% which was around the polling average. There were state polls that didn't weigh for education level that could have illuminated Clinton's tenuous status in the midwestern states that ended up costing her the electoral college.

Firstly, Biden doesn't need any of those 3 states to win. Those are all gravy states to the Biden campaign.

Secondly - Biden is ahead in AZ and Florida regardless of his need for them:

The 'latest poll' showing him 'tied' in Florida is from a below average pollster, the average of all the polls has it at Biden +6.3% in Florida. Recent Fox and Sienna (excellent pollsters) have Biden up 9% and 6% respectively - also showing Biden at or nearing 50% and Trump struggling to get to the mid-40s.

Trump eked out a win against perhaps the most unpopular presidential candidate of our lifetimes. Since pretty much inauguration day he's been the most unpopular president of the modern era, unable to bring his approval numbers or his polled vote percentage anywhere near 50%.

Trump won mostly because of Clinton-fatigue and misogyny. Unfortunately for him, he thinks he won because of his racist tendencies. He didn't. Thousands and thousands of voters refused to vote for the very, very unpopular Hillary Clinton in 2016. The beneficiaries of her unpopularity were Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump.

Bernie already had his come-to-Jesus moment with this phenomena, DJT is standing on-deck.

I could see Trump step down, maybe if his numbers are so bad he cant recover, butHe doesnt lose and only wins in his mind so stepping down isnt losing. Id say give it to the end of the month and the republicans that have been backing him start to distance themselves from him.
