After all these years, my team, the Washington Redskins are very probably changing their name. According to ESPN, their coach, Ron Rivera:
>>>>>
told the (Washington) Post it is important that a new nickname respects Native American culture and traditions, while also saluting the military. Rivera is the son of an Army officer.
<<<<<
I'm curious what they settle on. It sounds like they still plan on incorporating Native American iconography, which seems to be a sensitive area for some. It has been reported that the Cleveland Indians are examining their name. They already stopped using the Chief Wahoo image on their uniforms.
The name Indians doesn't seem any more offensive than the Atlanta Braves, Kansas City Chiefs, Chicago Blackhawks or Golden State Warriors. Are people of Scandinavian descent offended by the name Minnesota Vikings? Is the movement to sanitize all brands an overdue reckoning or a bridge too far?
I went to Mount Vernon High School. Will someone complain that they are traumatized going to school at a place named after a plantation? I'd hope not, as Mount Vernon is a fascinating exhibit and educational display of Colonial living, and is the most visited home in the country. It's better to teach history and learn it's lessons than to sweep it under the rug and pretend it never happened.
The Redskins will change their name, but they will forever be known as the team formerly known as the Redskins, much like how Richmond, Virginia will always be known as the former capitol of the Confederacy once all their statues are removed. History can't be erased, just studied.

Um, the Ravens were the
Um, the Ravens were the Browns.
The Redskins were established in 1932, so the brand is much more established than the Colt 45's was, which only got used for a couple of years. Eventually, the name will be a distant memory, but it will take time, and a generation or four dying out. The Browns left their name in Cleveland, just like the Sonics left their name with Seattle. There will be a Seattle Sonics again. The Clippers used to be the Buffalo Braves, but no one really talks about that, so you may have a point. However, it probably has more to do with the fact that the Braves/Clippers have never won any titles. The Redskins have won five NFL titles, the last three being Super Bowls. Those aren't as easily forgotten.

The Federals was the name of Washington's team in the USFL. I doubt the Redskins will go there. It doesn't incorporate the Native American aspect that Rivera cited. Will New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian tradition be allowed to continue? The history celebrates the influence and traditions of the Native Americans in the region, including the history of sheltering run-away slaves, but the reality is it's a bunch of inner-city black men dressing up as Indians, which feels like at least as much cultural appropriation as these other names being discussed.

Mardi Gras is by its very essence a saturnalia and therefore rules should not be respected, including rules about what is offensive and what is not. Like showing your dick in public, for example, and then turning around and puking in someone's planter.
Far as I know American Scandinavians have never been victims of a deliberate genocide in this country, so that's a pretty bad example. Besides, what is the equivalent offensive term for a Scandinavian person? Is there one that carries as much hate, history and pain as the term 'Red Skin'?

I'm okay with the name Redskins being retired. It's clearly perceived as a slur by some, and there's no need for that baggage. I don't as easily understand why the Cleveland Indians are seriously considering changing their name. Is calling First Nations people Indians a slur? The Cleveland Indians should change their name because why the hell are they called Inidans? First off, the term Indian is not used anymore except by Native Americans who use it the way that black people use the N word. Second off, I don't know of any other team named after an entire group of people. The New York Italians. The Boston Irish. The Minnesota Swedes. So why would you name a team after Indians?
Further, are there even any Native American football player, let alone an entire team of them? It's one thing to use a bear or an eagle as a mascot, a symbol of power, force. >>>>hy the hell are they called Indians? First off, the term Indian is not used anymore except by Native Americans who use it the way that black people use the N word.
Javs, in the United States, the term "Indian" has a legal meaning and its used almost exclusively in official federal and tribal documents and communications when referring to the collective of indigenous people in the continental United States ("Alaskan Native" is the official term for folks up in Alaska), so its not like black people calling themselves and each other the "N" word. I worked in the Indian Country Environmental Justice Clinic in law school and on the first day, the director told us that "Native American is what non-Indians call Indians." When I am talking about indigenous people, I try to use specific tribal names like Chinook, Navajo, etc., but "Indian" as used for the collective of tribal people is not really a slur. Most Indians use the term interchangeably with "native" and "indigenous." If you think about it, "Native American" is not much better because why would the people want to be named after a 15th Century Italian mapmaker? And between the two, being named instead after a 15th Century Italian navigational error has a bit more irony to it.
Of course, that doesn't mean its right to name a sports team after marginalized and exploited people, but just wanted to clear up how the specific term is used in the United States.
