I just don't get how a critter like that finds it's way to a huge urban area like Russian Hill & the Embarcadero.
Even with the streets for the past three months mostly deserted at night there isn't any rural, wooded area anywhere near that part of town except maybe the Presidio, but how does a mountain lion even get there?
Coyotes are roaming the streets in that general neighborhood as well, which is strange enough, but a mountain lion? There's a reason they're called "mountain" lions.
Maybe a local Richie Richardson keeps exotic pets and one got out.
Whatever it is, keep your dogs & cats well locked up at night SFers.
On another note, will the uber-lefties be demanding a new name for Russian Hill soon? Because somebody somewhere might feel demeaned somehow?
>>>There are plenty of pumas on the Peninsula south of SF.up by Skyline<<<
There sure are, in very mountainous areas far away from any civilization & people. I love to hike around up there, it's a beautiful region, and I always keep a wary eye out.
Almost every year in the summer there are one or two big cats that find their way down from the hills into Palo Alto or Redwood City, but to get to that northeast corner of downtown SF they have to roam through many, many miles of concrete jungle.
It's an urban jungle to you and me but there is plenty of green space to roam in as long as six foot fences are the equivalent of stepping over a crack in the sidewalk. The Coyotes were caught on camera coming across the GG bridge with the reduced traffic I could see a cat coming into the city the same way.
First spotted one town east (in Dr. Oz's nabe); then spotted about six blocks west of here. The distance between is maybe 2-3 miles. I'm pressed that it crossed four streets busy enough to have a bus route.
What's next? Wolves? Big cats?
Hand-sized spiders and raccoons near the trash are exciting enough on the average night.
As we post there is a young male deer cavorting in the kiddie pool in the front yard. Earlier today a Pileated Woodpecker was tearing into an old tree stump a few feet from our kitchen window. Couple days ago a gigantic Great Horned Owl was relaxing on a different stump a few feet away.
>The lost wayward young mountain lion has been safely and easily captured and is being transported to more suitable lion territory. Kudos to Captain Corso, Officer Pone, California Department of Fish & Wildlife and the SFPD. The mountain lion was not able to find its way out of San Francisco and needed a little assistance.
I remember when Tatiana got loose in the SF zoo. It was one of those misty foggy winter days right around dusk with low visibility when the cop got the call that he had to go to the zoo because a tiger was out. A cop who had probably worked hard to get assigned to one of the lowest violent crime areas of the city, and now he had to walk into Jurassic Park with a side arm. I don’t know maybe he had a riffle in the trunk. I’m sure that was not the call that cop was expecting when he went to work that day.
Speaking of apes from Marin I had a work event at the zoo many years ago, and the person was explaining that they had just completed a huge upgrade to the Gorilla enclosure. When they were planning the upgrade they were worried that all the construction work would stress the gorillas, so they built a big wall to shield the gorillas from the work that was going to be done. The Gorillas mostly ignored the wall when they built it, but as soon as the construction started instead of being stressed the male Gorillas climbed way up on a perch so they could look over the wall and watch the construction going on. We aren’t that far removed.
For a Hüsky, you need a Hohner Melodica, preferably a Green one (I think it's in C#) and play some Wolfish tones, like old John Denver with some Little Willy John riffs mixed in.
Or just open a Car Door. Throw a rind of Cheddar in there, maybe some grilled Meat or TÖfu.
Just open the damn Car Door. That always works.
You could say "Go for a Ride ?? L:et's go for a Car Ride !!! Woof woof woof ! "
After seeing that video I'm surprised we're not hearing more about how when authorities surround a dangerous predator (which happens to be a large cat) who is resisting capture and wielding deadly weapons with intent to harm they carefully lasso it and throw a net over it, take it to the hospital and eventually release it back to it's home.
When it's a black man resisting they just shoot him down.
Not exactly the same of course, but still, especially right now the correlations are fairly clear.
And sad ending for that young cat, but he went right over the mountain and back to civilization, likely the same trek he took the first time he ended up at the end of the Peninsula.
Did he have a death wish? Or a taste for leftover pizza.

Why do people always have to make fun of Bob Weir?
The main thing I take from this story and many others like it is how quickly the natural world rolls back in when humans fade away for a while.
And that cat is sleeping somewhere in the inner city right now, likely up in a tree.
I believe our Roarshock lives in that general vicinity. Keep your eyes up Roar.

mountain lion). It was pretty crazy.
