It's easy to bag on him, but long ago I saw his show a couple of times and I was surprisingly impressed. The guy has a lot of talent, he's an entertainer, his show was entertaining, and his fans absolutely LOVE him.
He played for Bette Midler in NY. If she thinks he's talented, that's enough for me.
From Wikipedia - Bette Midler caught Manilow's act in 1971 and chose the young musician as her pianist at the Continental Baths in New York City that year, and subsequently as a producer on both her debut and sophomore record albums The Divine Miss M (1972) and Bette Midler (1973).
Although I don't own any of his recordings, and have never seen a live Show, he seems to have achieved a niche in the Cheesy Music Biz and probably has a comfortable house to reside.
Sure he's no Billy Joel or Madonna, but I bet he tips the Pizzeria delivery people in a generous manner.
So I've never seen Barry Manilow or Billy Joel, and that's OK but I did catch Madonna once at Live Aid in Philadelphia at the old JFK Stadium.
They tore it down not much later. Grateful Dead played the last "official" concert there 7-7-1989, but the Rolling Stones played a rehearsal Show that month before their "Actual" show(s) at the Vet next door.
Live AIDS was a "Marathon Media Event" and basically JFK Stadium was ready for demolition. They had not bothered to repair any Plumbing, knowing that the Wrecking Ball was imminent.
So all the Toilettes were backing up and there was a steady mire of sewage running along the Concrete walkways, which was somewhat disgusting, but then again it's Philadelphia, so no big Deal.
What I recall about the Madonna set was her Backup Band came out and played some pretty Groovy music, and then there's this really Horrible screechy awful Madonna vocal... People complain about Donna G but Madonna was really a thousand times MORE Awful.
I absolutely would have preferred Barry Manilow in that slot.
Alas, we got Madonna. That was pretty much the worst of the Music acts there, but her backup band were really quite Good.
Ha! I was just about to post that this thread has morphed smoothly away from it's original form, much like how a jam morphs smoothly out of a China Cat.

Not into showtunes.
We used to pipe in "Mandy" over the PA to drive stragglers out the door at closing time when I worked at the Hollywood Amoeba.
One of those folks sort of like Johnny Mathis, that nobody was terribly surprised when they finally decided to come out of the closet.

“Surprisingly Impressed”
^ I fall firmly in this camp.
Saw him about 30 years ago at a one-off show (not part of a tour).
Was nothing like I expected.
It was not show tunes, but jazz based.
Excellent musicianship. It wasn’t King Crimson, but dude (and band) could play.
Far from schlock.
I walked away impressed.

I was out there last November. Place looks nice.
Especially compared to the hell-holes they've played in forever.
Although, I think they've killed the tailgating.
The new stadium in L.A. looks insane.
Oh, and they're building a bullet train LA to Vegas.
