I miss fireflies. When I lived in the Chicago area in the early 90s, I had an 80 acre soybean field right next door to my apartment complex. For a while there, my Friday ritual was to eat a few grams of shrooms late in the day and then go watch thousands of fireflies hovering over the soybeans with the crackling of the high-tension electric wires above as the soundtrack.
I cloned the gene for luciferase from Photuris Lucicrescens, the common firefly back in the early days. Utilizing bioluminescence to follow the movement of human recombinant proteins involved with cancers.
The one thing hot and humid weather is good for -- fireflies. As a kid I remember them mostly flying around "at our height," but when we spot them now, there is lots of them flying waaaaaaay up in the treetops, too. Some nights (early nightfall, in early July is prime time) there's swarms of them up there. It's quite the sight.
Started noticing them here in May. (central Jerseyland). Been brush-hogging an overgrown field or two and it's much cooler working in the later hours. I hate when I shred the poor things lurking in the brush :(
Although as kids, we used to squish them and spread the glo - stuff on our clothes.
I remember my Dad telling me many years back how the Lightning Bugs are revered in Japan -- apparently they don't like polluted air, so seeing them indicates that the Air is clean.

Collected hundreds of them and let them all loose in the lobby
The boys still laugh at this one 20 years later

Jaz you were eating shrooms so that was probably just reflections of the glow stick in your pocket off your sunglasses. Hope you had fun.
