Hey all, toying with getting one...anyone play one? know anything?
I see some used ones on craigslist $200-500 range...
any recs?
I play guitar, poorly or not very disciplined. i LOVE pedal steel and this seems to be a dummy version to get some of that same flavor/tone/color. i'd like to play with my buddies and be able to contribute on a different instrument.
there's a used asher for $500 and a 60's japaneese made one for $225...
ronq was buliding one for me years ago before he passed....

I play and can tell you that
I play and can tell you that it's mostly about your ear and sense of pitch. No frets to help you. Then there are tunings. Volume pedal helps get the sound.
I have a cheap lap steel and it's only OK tone wise. I like the sound of old Fenders and my favorite that I've heard is Sierra.

I only paid 100 for mine.
I only paid 100 for mine. Wish I'd spent a bit more. Like I said in the guitar thread, guitar center used has a risk free trial period. Full refund for any reason. Play for a month and return it for the cost of shipping. They usually have some vintage Supros listed. Check out the Airliner if you can find one.

You could also go this route
You could also go this route to start. Take a cheap electric guitar and put a nut extender over the nut. No modifications to the instrument. It just raises the strings. Then buy a lap steel bar. It's different from a slide. Much heavier and solid. Open tuning and off you go. I did it with an old acoustic guitar instead of buying a Weissenborn.
Sounds great.

The part about it being
The part about it being repainted raises a flag for me. You'd have to remove everything to do that. Then it begs the question - why? Browse Reverb.Com
See what's out there.

Lap steels are a lot of fun.
Lap steels are a lot of fun. I've been thinking of getting one and eventually adding in some slide electric guitar to some of my music.

I was always thinking of
I was always thinking of getting a Dobro. I see that Fender has a nice Resonator Dobro model called the FR50 going for just under $300.
I guess the few things great about a Dobro are they can be played on a lap, upright in any tunning, no amp is needed and they have such a cool tone.

Beautiful playing,
Beautiful playing, Stringtwang! I've got a few olf laptops, but haven't taken the time to learn to play. Turtle, there is a lot of great advice and information on Steel Guitar Forum. From what I have read, avoid a hundred dollar lap steel, but you can find some perfectly acceptable ones starting around $300.

I think that it's really a
I think that it's really a matter of committing the time to begin learning a new instrument, or even playing your old ones.
For example, I have many CookBooks, but don't often bother to make a Soufflê or Goat-stuffed Camel.
Most people are just struggling to earn a living, and have not enough leisure time to play Music.
