The first real gathering of the scene involving Phil after Garcia's passing, not the first musical event, but the first gathering of the scene with Phil in the building. The fatty circle on the balcony over Van Ness was special.
I went to a very disappointing RatDog show at the Ogden in Denver winter '96? No lead guitar, but had Matt Kelly, I think? Large, gaping black hole of a chasm in the music.

If we're not counting Jerry's memorial in Golden Gate Park, my recollection is there was a Ratdog show already scheduled at the Warfield very soon after Jerry's passing, and that show went on.
I can't remember how soon it was after that dark day in August but it seems like it was just a week or so after - maybe even before the memorial. All of that time is just a haze to me now. I remember the show being incredibly emotional, almost like a wake, with everyone from the GD & BGP organizations there, everyone broken.
I remember a lot of interactions with friends that night but not much about the show, except that I think Bob opened with Knockin' On Heaven's Door, and maybe some guests like Henry Kaiser playing with the band. And that the music & that band could not rise to the occasion that night. I suppose not many bands could have.
It's too bad that Bob didn't have a stronger side band going at the time. My feeling was always that Ratdog started as just a lightweight goof, a chance for Bob & his buddy Wasserman to play together between Dead tours, but that band was not ready to take on the heavy lifting that came with playing and representing after Jerry's passing, and clearly Bob wasn't ready to put something more serious together.
I saw pretty much every group or individual show from the various members after that, but for me personally nothing I saw after Jerry truly picked up the baton until those Phil shows at the Warfield in April of '99.
What a debt of gratitude we owe to Phil (and Jill, if we're going to be honest) for picking up that heavy baton and carrying it so well for such a long time after.

>>>Ratdog at the Warfield shortly after Jerry passed away.....9/1/95<<<
I guess that was the one I was talking about. In my memory it was sooner to Jerry's passing, but I guess it makes sense since Bob was on the east coast when Jerry decided to split town.
It must have been Ratdog in Dec. 1996. Best part of the show was the location, the Hilton Ballroom. Low ceilings, nothing special, but I'd been at an acoustic Hot Tuna benefit for Seva there in the early '80s that I loved so there was a nostalgia factor. If I stayed for the whole thing it was the first and last time I didn't walk out of a Ratdog show.
I started the day responding to a call for help from a friend to help him fix a computer network. What he didn't tell me was that the computer network belonged to the production company that was running the tour that Phil was a part of. As we drove to Red Rocks, he still didn't tell me where we were going. Nice surprise for my first show back. Had passes, watched the show from the soundboard area and got paid for the day.

Furthur Festival 1997 at The Greek. Was an unexpected surprise when Bob & Phil came out to play w Bruce Hornsby I think they played Wharf Rat anf The Other One . It was still light out and the first time I had seen them since my last show at RFK in 1995.
I've yet to attend any incarnation of GD since Jerry died. Would love to catch a DNB show but everything good seems coastal. Lots of travel expenses and it's hard to beat free streams, plus, not being around babbling, fucking drunks destroying your space and time is priceless.

I've yet to attend any incarnation of GD since Jerry died. Would love to catch a DNB show but everything good seems coastal. Lots of travel expenses and it's hard to beat free streams, plus, not being around babbling, fucking drunks destroying your space and time is priceless.
