Lot of memories in that building, and not just the GD

The first real gathering of the scene involving Phil after Garcia's passing, not the first musical event, but the first gathering of the scene with Phil in the building.  The fatty circle on the balcony over Van Ness was special.

I went to a very disappointing RatDog show at the Ogden in Denver winter '96? No lead guitar, but had Matt Kelly, I think? Large, gaping black hole of a chasm in the music.

Didn't try anything GD related again until Phil was on '98 Other Ones tour. That was MUCH better...and had Kimock and Mark.

Ratdog

Points Fest in Tampa and Johnnie Johnson played Gone Fishin

The sun was bright, couple of old friends, porpoise were swimming at our feet pre game along the seawall and you know me......the doses were sweet

Good time.

Saw the 2 nights later in a hotel bar in Orlando Embassy Suites and I remember Bobby sitting on the stage playing Fever on acoustic and his roadie ran over to swap him with and electric and Bobby told him to back the fuck off.

He did grab the electric and played a bombing GLORIA

Real good times

either Ratdog in Ben Lomond when Ace should up late and wasted.

He fell that day too but got back up to finish the set with his amp not working until the encore, a rockin' Samson

or

Benefit for the Headwaters (redwood trees) at the Warfield with Bonnie Raitt. Paula Poundstone opened the show and got heckled. I think it was Chimenti's first show with Weir

Ratdog HOB with the nevilles 99,NOLA.

I think.

When was the other ones tour? I left at set break then nothing until my first pl&f in '01

The Other Ones 12/5/2002 Just an all around horrible show. Hearing Micky sing is a thing I could have lived without. Never seen a show where the number one drug of choice was being drunk off your ass.

I would rather forget that whole night. The show that brought me back was Dead Heads for Obama at the Warfiield 12/4/2008. Now that show had all the right feels.

Jaz, was that the Ratdog show where Cyril, Ian, Ivan Neville showed up, and Irvin Mayfield? That was March 2001. My best Ratdog show by far! Deadheads for Obama was a mighty time. The beginning of the melting of the ice that allowed for The Dead '09 to happen. Got word on tix from the Zone, was a very very tough ticket!

If we're not counting Jerry's memorial in Golden Gate Park, my recollection is there was a Ratdog show already scheduled at the Warfield very soon after Jerry's passing, and that show went on.

I can't remember how soon it was after that dark day in August but it seems like it was just a week or so after - maybe even before the memorial. All of that time is just a haze to me now. I remember the show being incredibly emotional, almost like a wake, with everyone from the GD & BGP organizations there, everyone broken.

I remember a lot of interactions with friends that night but not much about the show, except that I think Bob opened with Knockin' On Heaven's Door, and maybe some guests like Henry Kaiser playing with the band. And that the music & that band could not rise to the occasion that night. I suppose not many bands could have.

It's too bad that Bob didn't have a stronger side band going at the time. My feeling was always that Ratdog started as just a lightweight goof, a chance for Bob & his buddy Wasserman to play together between Dead tours, but that band was not ready to take on the heavy lifting that came with playing and representing after Jerry's passing, and clearly Bob wasn't ready to put something more serious together.

I saw pretty much every group or individual show from the various members after that, but for me personally nothing I saw after Jerry truly picked up the baton until those Phil shows at the Warfield in April of '99.

What a debt of gratitude we owe to Phil (and Jill, if we're going to be honest) for picking up that heavy baton and carrying it so well for such a long time after.

Long Live Phil Lesh!

Long live the Grateful Dead!!!

agreed Lance.  Phil resuscitated the music and made it relevant again for me where Bob and the rest did not.  Phil provided a portal for so many different tastes over the years too.  it was easy to judge and shamey certain styles or band mates but man did he really try to provide something for so many

same should be said about the GD times 1000 of course

unless its late 90s GD.  I have read that shit will rot ya brain

Shoreline Dead 03

>>>Ratdog at the Warfield shortly after Jerry passed away.....9/1/95<<<

I guess that was the one I was talking about. In my memory it was sooner to Jerry's passing, but I guess it makes sense since Bob was on the east coast when Jerry decided to split town.

It must have been Ratdog in Dec. 1996. Best part of the show was the location, the Hilton Ballroom. Low ceilings, nothing special, but I'd been at an acoustic Hot Tuna benefit for Seva there in the early '80s that I loved so there was a nostalgia factor. If I stayed for the whole thing it was the first and last time I didn't walk out of a Ratdog show.

>>>it was the first and last time I didn't walk out of a Ratdog show<<<

What a hater.

The Ratboarders won't approve.

Yeah, Lance, but I kept trying. From then on I saw them on double-bills with performers I liked or wanted to see if I liked.

Team Phil Orlando 01

Phil & Friends 9/14/99 at Red Rocks.

I started the day responding to a call for help from a friend to help him fix a computer network. What he didn't tell me was that the computer network belonged to the production company that was running the tour that Phil was a part of. As we drove to Red Rocks, he still didn't tell me where we were going. Nice surprise for my first show back. Had passes, watched the show from the soundboard area and got paid for the day.

It was a benefit for the Headwaters Forest.  The first time back at the Eureka Muni for Weir since the Fall of '67 "Quick And The Dead" PNW tour that was recorded for use on "Anthem Of The Sun".  They had Kimock in the band, but it still sounded thin.  I don't think I saw anything with any of the GD members again until the 2004 Summer Tour of The Dead.

Does Joe Gallant & Illuminati count?  Saw them at the Knitting Factory on January 13, 1996.  We drove up from Delaware in a terrible snowstorm because Henry Kaiser was going to be with them, it's not like he plays the east coast much so we figured it was worth the trip, but he ended up bailing because be didn't want to deal with the snow.  Was very bummed, finally got to see Henry at the 8X10 in Baltimore on 3/27/97 when he toured with Second Sight and the next night in Philly.

The summer 2000 show I saw. Last show of summer tour with Dylan, Waterloo Village,  Phil sucked. I left early. Dylan opened and was great. Most people left in droves when Phil started

Ratdog here in St. Pete- 1st time around for them with Johnny Johnson on keyboards.

Was excited  to see Bobby in my backyard for a lovely outdoor show.

It was either Ratdog at the Warfield 9/1/95 or Old & in the Gray at the Warfield around the same time.  Don't recall which one came first.

Actually it was Ratdog, a little digging helped me remember that the Old & In the Gray show was actually part of David Grismans birthday bash...

I've yet to attend any incarnation of GD since Jerry died.  Would love to catch a DNB show but everything good seems coastal. Lots of travel expenses and it's hard to beat free streams, plus, not being around babbling, fucking drunks destroying your space and time is priceless.
