The future of concerts? Shapiro thoughts

Forums:

This is a rough one to process

personally I will struggle the longer one of my biggest loves is unattainable

what are your thoughts?

testing to get into a show or festival? will they be paying medical professionals to administer these tests? how will they protect themselves legally in the event of injury from an improperly administered test, or potential cross contamination with other concertgoers that might be positive? in the event of a positive result do you get a refund? in the event of a false positive do you get a refund?

although i suppose the only dealbreaker for me would be offering my personal info in conjunction with a test - i might have concerns but i think id be fine with it if the tests were anonymous.

not really worried about getting the virus, i take some precautions when in public spaces for the sake of others around me, but personally idgaf and im happy to go groove with others who dont give a fuck. id probably try and stay home for 7-14 days after a show, again for the sake of others, not worried about getting it myself.

might not be down to go to a big show in the bay area today, but i think the time id be comfortable with it is fast approaching, and id be happy to do some rural harvest tour style DNB shows today.

and again, a dead show with social distancing would be like a dream come true.

"you mean i can go see the dead, and all the wooks and drunks and spinners have to stay 6 feet away from me? i must be dreaming!"

Each seat will be enclosed in a 6x6x8 foot plexiglass pod with air vents in the top. Concessions will be ordered from smart phones and delivered by drone. 2 complimentary joints and a souvenir reusable plastic gallon piss jug with Shappy's picture on it will be included in the price.

Can you pass the covid test?

>>>>>6x6x8 foot plexiglass pod

Sounds about like your car.

Ooo-whee!

Yes, but there is more room to dance in the pod.

That's some Philip K. Dick level fiction!

Will it now be called a "pod run" instead of a "tarp run"?

And what does Shapiro have to do with anything?  Will he clutch to and defend the antebellum VIP upsell model, or has COV19 somehow paved the way for a more socially conscious framework to emerge and replace the "product" that had sadly become the defacto status quo?  Imagine people coming together in the true spirit of community to put on a show that is sustainable because we all count equally and can appreciate each other's presence on such terms.  The longer we're cooped up, the greater the "effect" on this front might be ... possibly.

Antebellum Shappy

Pods, people.

People pods are the future. Embrace them. Love them. Be one with the pod.

>>>Will it now be called a "pod run" instead of a "tarp run"?

Ticket holders will be whooshed to their pod through a vacuum tube like a deposit at a drive through bank teller.

Thanks, didn't click on it or realize it had to do with Shapiro, but literally stopped reading after getting triggered by the first caption:

"Peter Shapiro, the veteran promoter responsible for reuniting the Grateful Dead"

Again, Antebellum

lol, but will it be first come first served as a matter of pod choice, or will we be randomly whooshed?   Will people show up early for the "pod line"?

Do you often get triggered by facts?

Do we really need to explore the factual nature (or lack thereof) of that statement?

If one wants to consider the validity of his opinion on the future of concerts, then yeah, it should be explored.

And it is a fact.

Whatever one may think of the Fare Thee Well shows, they would not have happened if not for Shapiro.

And in that light it's a sign of his place in the business, because all the major corporate promoters tried and failed/bailed on the idea of bringing the C4 together for a 50th anniversary, but he WAS able to make it happen and then brought in a major corporate promoter (who had originally failed to make the project happen) to help make it all work.

From a business and esthetic standpoint those shows were some of the most successful of all time, and the independent guy was able to make them happen when all the big-timers couldn't.

That's exactly the sort of thing that makes a good & successful promoter, so whether one likes him or not, his opinion on things to do with concerts should be considered pretty valid.

Was the "Grateful Dead" actually reunited?

I was there  with Walton  At Santa Clara

Phil was there.

it was was pretty darn good

IMNHO. it was way better than & co

part of my anticipated responses were around when and where we might be able to revel in the joy of live music again

rooms with 200 people capacity with 100 people in them   Askenaz?

outdoor small DNB SHOW   A man can  and will dream...

Ok reality check

im starting to think big shoes won't be happening till after we have a proven, approved, manufactured,  and widely administered vaccine

12-18 months

I was at Santa Clara too ... and also thought it was pretty darn good.

I would easily take a lineup with Phil for the long haul over Dead & Co, and if forced to decide would go with Trey over JM ... but it's not by a huge margin.

I've really grown to like Phish in recent times, but feel Trey's guitar style day-in-day-out might be a little over the top for my tastes as applied to the GD catalog ... even though it'd likely click very well on occasion.

What lltd said...

Was the "Grateful Dead" actually reunited?

It was not.

I remember a Bucket and a Loser where the band on stage wasn't even togetherwink

Did anyone ever say they were reunited?

not till heaven

but Phil Lesh always blows my mind mid jam, and leaves me stunned, in awe, and grinning ear to ear

Phil and Jerry make the pillars of the temple with two lead guitars intertwined, playing as one with perfect balance and interplay   Blows my mind

the interplay, creativity, spirit , passion, fun, wonder and MAGIC of Phillip Chapman

there is only one Phil, and thank God for blessing us with that lovable kook

long live Phil lesh, while still with us on this plane, and beyond as he drifts through the cosmos

phil motherfucking lesh  that's all I can say

Rolling Stone (first picture caption)

I'm even one to be philosophic about it as well.  I believe Bobby on some level when he's claimed that Jerry still "talks" to him and would even go along with the "spirit of the Grateful Dead" still being tangibly alive; something akin to a broken piece of a hologram that is able to still project the whole (from its perspective);  however, I refute the assertion that Peter Shapiro was responsible for reuniting the Grateful Dead.

^ is he a show talker or "just working"?

Trailhead's BargeFest seems the only sensible way to go for now.

Outdoors on the water, band on a barge, small groups of people socially distancing on boats and kayaks. If someone gets too close, ya smack em with a paddle.

Up the game and broadcast /stream audio so people can optionally tune in on radio or their cell phone.

Promoter makes extra money on kayak rentals - easy to disinfect.

Alcohol ordered in advance for pickup and/ or delivered to boat by a guy in scuba gear.

No souvenir posters - just printed masks. A mask will be like a wristband.

You inland-ers are screwed.

< something akin to a broken piece of a hologram that is able to still project the whole (from its perspective)>

thank you for not misrepresenting holograms!

you could just do that same thing without kayaks on a lawn...or slab of concrete...or literally any wide open outdoor space that exists on planet earth

Daylight - technically correct, but there is something romantic about the smell of salt air, sea spray in the eyes, and sand in the crotch...plus you can pee in the water and make like you are just swimming by innocently

plus you can pee in the water

ive seen elderly wooks whip it out right in the middle of the lawn so technically you can still pee anywhere at a non kayak show

Fuck Shappy.  He just can't face the reality that there will not be any shows in 2020.  Playing BS games with rescheduling shows at the Cap so  he doesn't have to cough up $.

>>>I refute the assertion that Peter Shapiro was responsible for reuniting the Grateful Dead<<<

Fair enough, but Shappy never said that, the modern Rolling Stone did, and they don't know anything (did they really ever?) about the Grateful Dead.

What Shapiro did was reunite the core members of the Grateful Dead to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead.

That's how he billed it, that's what it was, and no one else was able to make it happen.

In the real world (not just whining on DBMBs) it's not easy to promote successful shows and be a sustained success in big league concert promotion, especially in the era of massive corporate promotion.

Y'all should give it a try some time.

BTW, I've been a major fan of Phish for over 27 years, I love AshTrey and I think he did really well in Fare Thee Well, but I think Mayer is better at playing Grateful Dead music.

And I'm absolutely AMAZED to write that, since after seeing him multiple times in multiple settings over multiple years I had absolutely ZERO respect for Mayer's depth as a guitar player before D$C.

But he changed my mind.

And I think as us old-timers would admit, changing our mind gets harder as we get older.

I can't admit anything

but I  do admire Phil Lesh and think he is amazing

blows my mind

and i miss that ticket reselling a hole bill ghram mo

I enjoyed gd 50

And those big corps totally suck  $$$$greed$$$$

"friend of the devil "

Elderly Wooks  would make a good song title.  Go for it, Keller Williams!
