Europe '72 Good Lovin's

The Dark Star's and Truckin'-> Other One's from this tour get most of the attention (deservedly so) but these are packed with fantastic jams that can really get out there.  I've had the box set for years but having these available on Tidal makes it easy to dial up individual tracks and I've been going through every one of these on the tour.  If you haven't spent much time taking these in it would be time well spent to do so.

And the cautions and the playin’s and the sugarees and the....

I haven't listened to europe 72 in a year or two but when I did..I listened to the whole tour twice. but I recently listened to the version from jan 2, 72 where the good lovin jam went into china cat and then back into good lovin and what occurred to me was how funky it was getting it kind of reminded me of the hard to handle jam but as we know after Pigpen returns dec71, hard to handle was not one of the songs he brought back and stayed retired since aug 71.

Hard to Handle definitely would get funky sometimes and maybe Garcia saw Good Lovin as a way to tap into that funk that he was used to getting from H2H..but no longer could because pig didn't want to sing it anymore or for whatever the reason the band chose not to perform H2H after he returned .

You know what I mean though. ..I'm talkin bout Pigpen Hard to Handle

I know not trying to be an asshole. I just happened to be at the Etta show so it always springs to mind, and is fun to watch.

Love how Etta seems to be hitting on pretty boy Weir and the rest of the band seems amused at him being squirmish at her interest.

Is there anything they didn't play well in 1972?

I think a good argument can be made that 1972 was their finest year.

It's certainly one of my favorites.

I was born in the 'sweet spot'

early August 72

I'd make that argument.

"And the cautions and the playin’s and the sugarees and the...."

The difference being the frequency of the Good Lovin's on this tour, and at this point most Playin's were 10 minute affairs..

And lets be honest; '72 Sugaree's don't hold a candle to '77 Sugaree's

Yep the playins didn't start stretching out until late in the tour.

But they were all consistent and strong  which was really my point ...and it really was the start of the extended  playin...and the band grew along with it

playin?

September 72 is a strong bet.

They sure were fish..they were taping for the live album so they brought their A game

>>>>>1972 was their finest year

I go back and forth between 72 and 73.  72 had the energy, but 73 had the psychedelic bliss.

Take your pick.

That era China>Rider transitions were great.

I've been visiting the 72 era a lot lately yes
