Facebook Censorship

Forums:

So a friend of mine is all into the various Covid-19 conspiracy stuff (5G, came from gorillas in the lab, etc.) and posts stuff on Facebook about it.  He is otherwise a smart, chill dude with a doctoral level of education and not a right wing wingnut by any means.  He just happens to be into the Covid-19 conspiracy shit.  I don't buy into most of that stuff, but noticed today that some of his posts on Facebook had been prominently labeled with a disclaimer that it was "fake news."

I get that Facebook is a private service and it can do what it wants, but it still was weird seeing them censoring content like that.   I can see if he was peddling some snake oil remedy or doing something that was contrary to public health and safety, but it was only some Youtube video about the supposed origin of the virus.

How do you all feel about Facebook censorship?

I think Facebook should be shut down.

Pointing out that it's bullshit isn't censoring it.

If people complain or tag the post,  then the algorithm's take over, and you could be facing....

menace to society -- Facebook that is -- the world was fine when it was just bands on MySpace and DBMBs (shakes cane)

I don't see Facebook as a problem, it's us people who are the problem.

I think Facebook is just one way that exposes us. Give us a way to show our stupidity and ignorant and/or hateful biases and we will, and the more ways we're given the more we'll show it.

All the right-wing mopes who babble on there, all the left-wing mopes who babble back?

Stupid & hate is as stupid & hate does, whether we can see it easily or not so easily.

Facebook isn't the problem, it's a window to the problem.

The real problem is we're fucking hateful idiots.

It's always been a data mining project,  so it will continue as such.

No,  I don't belong.

Don't belong,  don't belong don't be looongg now.

FB has become somewhat of a "quasi utility"; serving the function of a community network at various levels of scale.

IMO, it ought to be regulated as such, including 1st Amendment provisions ... at least until a public sector alternative can be implemented.

Lance, replace the word Facebook with guns, and your argument still makes good sense.

Facebook's not the issue, it's that 1st mutherfucking ammendment that needs tweeting. 2nd as well. Gotta happen sooner or later. Sooner under dems, much later under pubs.

Who's gonna take away their license to kill

>>>>>including 1st Amendment provisions

Only applies to governmental interference with free speech.

^ TRUE....as a result we have to put up with idiots like Illinois Nazis :(

Why is it a problem to label things that are clearly fake news and are also clearly being pushed by Russia and the Republicans as fake news. There is no question at all where the virus came from. People with agenda are pushing that story to distract America and your friend is a useful idiot.

Why is it a problem to label things that are clearly fake news and are also clearly being pushed by Russia and the Republicans as fake news.

because who decides what news is fake? who fact checks the fact checkers?

aside from institutional bias, each individual person working in the realm of fact checking/identifying fake news within each major tech company has their own inherent biases that can influence their decision making on a case by case basis.

now yer cookin w gas vroom vroom

Things can be objectively false (ie: 2 + 2 = 5).

The term "fake news" needs to be dropped hard and fast. Fake News used to be bullshit National Inquirer stories about Bat Boy and Loch Ness Monster etc. Leave it to Trump to mainstream the term.

Disagreeing with a subjective opinion doesn't make it fake news; differing opinions between naturally biased humans is to be expected..

< who decides what news is fake?

You or anyone with an ounce of common sense

< who checks the fact checkers ?

You or anyone paying close attention. Facts don't lie. Me, I believe scientists, and experts in their fields. I don't believe obvious lies delivered by flim flam artists disguised with a flag and a maga hat. Especially with todays state of affairs, this stuff is not that hard to figure out yourself,  unless you're a total terminal dumbfuck - better known as a chump supporter.

I love getting my morning paper,  but I totally skip the editorial page with all the letters to the editors submitted by fools who try to rewrite the stories you just fucking read, usually putting some fucked spin on it. I don't need to read someone else's opinion on what I just read, saw or heard. That's why foxnews thrives, it's an opinion network and american ignoramuses need to get their opinion someplace, they're too fucking stupid to figure things out for themselves.

Just take a look yourself, if you can't notice how this administration's fucked this country up, a disaster from soup to nuts, (unless you're riiiiiich)  well there's nothing I can tell ya. Go get your ass to work, its ok with me. I'm laying low.

Right, but re-read my post ... an implicit acceptance of what you are saying was conceded.

I'm basically saying that FB has kind of drifted into the sphere of it being a quasi utility (same goes with Google) and has a foot in the door of the public domain.

Maybe not apples to apples, but should Verizon be able to censor conversations over their network because it's a private company?

There's no Loch Ness Monster?

Damn.

(W) Mark Zuckerberg: Lockdown protests are misinformation. Facebook will ban organizers.
Facebook removes anti-quarantine events promoted on the platform in California, Nebraska and New Jersey, after consultation with state governments that say the events violate their respective stay-at-home orders. https://abcn.ws/2KlJHv6

Now FB just needs to ban the White House propaganda  page

im not talking about this in the context of today or current events - im sure you and i would almost entirely agree on what news is real and what news is fake right now, in 2020.

but what about 25 years from now? 100 years from now? 20 years ago if i would have described the current political state of america and the current white house administration you would never have believed me. what sort of unbelievable stuff might come to pass over the next century, or the next five centuries, and do we want to set a precedent where our government and/or a small handful of elite technocratic nultinational corporations are determining what news is "real" and what news is "fake"?

you are right - i or anyone else with an ounce of common sense can fact check for themselves - we dont need an intellectual ruling class to do it for us via censorship.

dealing with and tolerating people who hold beliefs that are dangerous, racist, violent or hateful is part of living in a free society.

 >>>>>but should Verizon be able to censor conversations over their network because it's a private company?

I don't like it, but if your contract with them doesn't prohibit that - yes, they can.

There are no laws to prevent mass media from lying or not telling the truth.

It's not illegal for "them" to create "Stories" that are not true.

Basically "they" can say whatever they want to say.  So write your own Stories and have Fun :)

The best thing I can say about Facebook is the famous Groucho Marx comment. " I would never belong to a club that would have me as a member. "

That's right stu and the media ...its like the song 'Dirty Laundry' ..they can tell you about a plane crash with a gleam in their eye.

Less concerned with reporting truth and more focused on pitting the two sided to boost ratings.

..and bob ...the groucho marx quote is apt

https://www.verdict.co.uk/youtube-coronavirus-ban-who/

youtube now on the censorship bandwagon...by their logic today, anyone recommending the use of a mask just a month or so ago would have been banned.

Not a huge fan of FB, but Brian d recently friended me and I had to reject him.

Why be a lying scumbag, Sarah?  Isn't being a scumbag enough?

Sarah and I have been FB friends for years, and she's not such a lying scumbag there, I suspect she just  likes to press your buttons here, Brian d because your fall Into her trap every time.

Meh.  She's a scumbag and has been for a long time.

I don't mind pointing it out, so it's hardly "pushing my buttons".

It's funny.  I don't crave any reaction from her.
