Jamming online, are we there yet?

Forums:

Curious if anyone has tried?

I know there are products that make claims, but do any of them work in reality?

Not sure how they're doing it but these guys made it work.

An overdub recording can still jam out, can't it?

They refused to answer when asked in the comments.

The video is edited. They give somebody credit.

I don't believe it was done live. The current technology has too much latency. It barely works for conversations during meetings. There's no way you could play in time live.

There is an app called accapella. I think it works well but you have run a live metronome

Yeah, but it lacks the dynamism of playing in the moment that all of us here have grown to appreciate/gravitate to.

I've been casually keeping an eye open for a number of years on this front, but haven't ever really followed up; however, it would seem our current situation will likely prompt many others to gain a big interest on this front.

I know latency has always seemed to be the biggest issue, but wondering if increased transfer rates / capacity has mitigated this to any extent?

Just thinking out loud:  I use a boomerang looper that is midi-synched to a Beat Buddy and can't help but wonder if there might be an answer in midi-synching as a place to start if there is still latency issues?  Maybe the latency will still exist, but all "content" within any given band member's feed will be in unison to the midi-clock (and not necessarily matter if each feed is slightly "off")?

Is sounds like jamkazam has resolved the latency issue, at least enough to make online jam sessions work well.  One thing is they discourage WiFi, best to plug in your ethernet cable directly to your setup and the software figures out the latencies.  Everyone's on headphones.  It's got some good reviews and it's free.

Barenaked Ladies have a bunch out; some with obvious edits/effects, but mostly straight-on.

Jamkazam is pretty cool.  I've had a some real-time jams with folks in TX, Italy, and Canada at the same time.  Need to have a wired internet connection.  There are latency issues sometimes.  Usually a new user on WiFi

Very cool!

Looks like Bobby is trying to leverage some sort of technology to do this:

Bobby said he would have it working by yesterday lol
