Jerry & Phil spinning records on the radio, 1967

Forums:

Maybe this is well known but I just stumbled upon it, I'd never heard it before. Phil & Jerry as guest DJs on Tom Donahue's radio show on KMPX in March of 1967, talking & spinning some of their favorite tunes.

Back when FM "free form" radio was just beginning, and so were the Grateful Dead, it's a great door into a long ago time & place. Just listening to the talking is cool, but it's better to listen to the music as well.

A nice way to pass some time, and no way is anyone finding radio like THIS to listen to these days.

Listened to big Tom and KMPX all night long living in Palo Alto in 1967

that music is imprinted on my soul

will check this out later.   Thanks!

I remember that one.  Didn't they talk about Deep Waves as weapons, or something similasimilar? Was a good playlist, as well.

Thanks for sharing.

HaHa

Phil calls the recently completed  first album a turd...

thx for the link (The Internet Archive is a treasure)

Fantastic,  I love it when Tom asked Jerry if he should take on some James Brown's management technique.  No smoking on stage, etc.

Thanks, Lance -- good find -- this will be my morning entertainment

Very cool. Thanks for the link.

"as well as such arcane topics as a top-secret military project to develop a "sound gun" that could kill or maim everyone for miles around with super-low-frequencies."

Ah, the brown noise.

Thanks for this, Lance.

Good stuff.

My wife and I listened to most of this last night, and enjoyed thoroughly. In addition to the fun historical perspective, it turned me on to some new music. Well, old music but new to me. Although I love 1960s jazz, I wasn't previously familiar with the music of Charles Lloyd and his amazing quartet. I've been exploring more of the quartet's music today, and loving it. Thanks for sharing, Lance. So cool to turn on to new old music. Never too late.

Charles Lloyd played at foothill JC. Sponsored by the music appreciation class we tool.  Now that was a good class.
and he is amazing!

Yeah, Charles Lloyd is brilliant, and is one of my all-time favorites to see live.

I figured that out about 17 years ago when I first saw him at the Kuumbwa. I had heard of him but didn't know his music. I only went to that show because Eric Harland was in his group and I pretty much go to anything that Harland is in.

I couldn't believe how great Lloyd was that night. He brought tears to my eyes, he simply blew me away. If I may use a hackneyed word, Charles Lloyd is one of the most spiritual musicians I have ever come across. He really searches and gets down in there DEEP. And damn, he ALWAYS plays with the very best people. Jack DeJohnette & Keith Jarrett in his early group? Common'! In his later years Eric Harland on drums & Jason Moran on piano? Simply the best.

It's a blast to hear him talk as well (something I usually don't care for from musicians at shows). At the end of the best show I've seen from him (and a top 20 show I've ever seen) where Zakir Hussain sat in with his group, he said, "Tonight is a secret between us. We will all walk out and act normal, we'll have to wait until we're home alone to roll on the floor and scream about what happened tonight. Only we know, only we share this evening."

Anybody else I'd roll my eyes, but that is exactly how I felt.

I saw him about a year ago and he was still excellent, but he's 82 years old now and with this damned pandemic shutting down live music for the forseeable future I fear I may have seen the last of him, but I cherish the many glorious moments I've shared with him.

I particularly liked the inclusion of Stowkowski ...you know that was Phil's.

I am guessing that I saw Lloyd 45 years ago and can still remember some of the feelings

Not to be sappy...

However,  I will comment that your post was beautifully written mr newberry

aware, feeling, honest and evocative

capturing some of the value and magic of live music

and the spirit and soul and expression that  music provokes and encompasses in general

I am more than ok with music and musical memories bringing tears

any man or woman should never "be ashamed " with expression or tears  that's part of what makes us humans

long live music!

Tonight is a secret between us. We will all walk out and act normal, we'll have to wait until we're home alone to roll on the floor and scream about what happened tonight. O don't know if i have ever screamed , but I have been floating and glowing...
