We shouldn't lose sight of the fact that the Masters golf tournament is off. Not just no women, no blacks and no Jews this year - no tournament at all.
I get the history and the pageantry and the bla bla bla of The Masters, but in the end it's really not that difficult a course for these guys to play.
20 under par?
That's way too easy, especially for a "major", and it's boring to watch.
Having no fans there almost certainly makes it easier to deal with the course & the pressure of the moment, but the scores at The Masters are always low.
I usually watch because it's such a big deal to the players, so there is usually drama involved, but for a demonstration of elite skills you can have the low scores, the endless syrupy, solemn piano music and all the Jim Nance cloying, hand-wringy jibber-jabber of The Mehsters.
For real tension and to watch the very best in the world handling huge pressure when the course ISN'T easy, give me the US Open (where the players ALWAYS whine about the greens & rough) and the British Open (where the elements almost always fuck with the players).
I understand that The Masters is a big deal, but for true brilliance it always seems more pomp than real circumstance to me.
The low scores were enhanced by the softer greens that were a byproduct of the tournament being played in November this year after more rain had fallen than when it's usually played in Spring. Augusta is also a more familiar course than the Open courses are to the pros, as they play it annually instead of sporadically. Jim Nance's soporific hosting aside, Augusta does have a lot of history, traditions and character that makes it a unique stop on the PGA Tour.
