Been hearing forever how this country needs to expand beyond a two party system, and I know there's been a few attempts at it over the years but is this finally the election that gives birth to a serious far left socialist party ? I like to think the zone is a microcosm of the country, so to see the split against most things labeled dem here, I say yes. Time for bro Bernie and his disciples to shed their democrat skin and run as unashamed democratic socialists. Too late for this years election but organize now, and by the next cycle that party could be a force to be reckoned with.

Could be. Bernie's going to
Could be. Bernie's going to drop out next week and he can get started on the 2024 revolution post haste.
May be an uphill battle as it's looking like his 2016 successes were quite a few people voting against Hillary as opposed to voting for Bernie.
No Hilldawg on the ballot, people were happy to vote for Warren, Pete, Amy, Bloomberg, etc.
Those options are all gone now and Bernie hasn't expanded his coalition beyond the solid 25-30% he's had.
So yeah, it's time for a Social Democratic party but for it to succeed in the American political climate it'd have to become significantly bigger than "just Bernie"

Not sure about timing, but he has had 4 years to pull their shit together and it seems participation numbers of his supporters are dropping, not expanding as he suggests.
I waited hours in the cold to vote for Bernie in the primary 4 years ago, but now don't see him as the best choice of what we have to choose from to do what needs to be done. Flushing the turd on November third - and taking the Senate.

my ideal political party
my ideal political party situation would have 2 dominant parties and 2 lesser, but still influential parties - the sanders-esque social democrats and the ron paul-esque libertarians clearly in the lead, but still competitive with the remnants of the GOP and DNC. the social democrats and libertarians of this country have many important issues in common, and should be working together in some cases to further the general anti establishment and populist cause. despite many disagreements, each side of that coin benefits from the other side suceeding and gaining traction as long as they are both under the heels of the DNC and GOP.

The only way we can break out
The only way we can break out of the two party system is with ranked choice voting, which would allow people to vote their conscience and not worry about the "spoiler effect."
Under this system, voters would be allowed to pick their favorite candidate and a back up. If their top candidate isn't in the top two, their back up vote would automatically kick in. So for instance, one could pick a Green Party candidate as their top choice and the Democrat as their backup, and if the Green Party person doesn't make the top two of all the candidates running, then the vote would switch to the Democrat back up. But the original vote would still be tracked for purposes of the 10% threshold often used for determining whether a party can participate in national debates.

Theoretically, it would be a good thing if the influence of the major parties on elections.was diminished, but what you suggest would guaranty a GOP majority for many years to come.

Until you change this America
Until you change this America will always be a two party country.
America’s “first past the post” elections, in which the candidate with the most votes wins, even if they receive less than a majority of the votes cast. In countries that instead award legislative seats based on the proportion of votes a given party receives, there is more incentive for small parties to form and compete. In the U.S. system, a party can win a seat only if its candidate gets the most votes. That makes it difficult for small political parties to win elections.
The two party system is a feature not a bug.

You think I'm just bullshitting ? I'm totally serious - nothing has exposed the need for another party like this election. The split in the democratic party, the amount of young republicans that can't stand trump, the independents not satisfied with either. All these folks need a party to rally behind that's not either dem or pub.
And I'm also not kidding when I said ken n javs should spearhead the movement. They're both articulate and savvy but most important, they're young, full of juice. Nobody seems to like the old blue dem guard anymore so take the frustrations and aspirations and help create, organize, mold a party. Why can't this happen ? It has to happen
