Agree.
Really liked him with Phil, loved him with WSMFP.

Jazz is Dead circa 1998 > 1999

Billy Cobham – drums, Jimmy Herring – lead guitar, Alphonso Johnson – bass, T Lavitz – keyboards

Also:

KVHW Live at Phoenix Theater on 1999-04-30 - - Jimmy Herring sits in because Ray White doesn't show. (Jazz is Dead opened the KVHW show)

(every song is like 10 / 20 minutes long)

Big Fan

Herring is good, but sometimes he plays too many notes.

Saw JID back in the day - didn't like 'em much. Unfortunately was expecting GD songs done in jazz. Instead, it was GD tunes done more or less normally, with no vocals. Cobham and Johnson are great players, but they didn't know how to play GD music. They just didn't have the feel for it. Johnson had the same problem in TOO.

Yes, he can be rather busy.

I bet he wears flannel pajamas.

Loved Jimmy's work with Phil but his tenure in Panic has over time, worn a bit thin. He's a guitar master yet many times goes to 3rd and 4th gear automatically. Add Trucks the mix and it often becomes too busy and tight-cornered. The swampy black magic voodoo side of WSP, which was one a key element, is missing. Or at least I can't hear it anymore. Maybe just me. Still a kick ass rock band though.

Jimmy Herring band is exactly were he shines.  I'm good with Jimmy in any context though w/JHB he dials it all in to a neat tight package.

Great with Mahavishnu John Mclaughlin's meeting of the spirits...

^Agreed!  Was just thinking about purchasing the live recording of the SF show and listened to snippets.  Good stuff!

>Great with Mahavishnu John Mclaughlin's meeting of the spirits...

Write out a part and Jimmy can play it --- backwards standing on his head.      Leave the pallet open -- as in WSP -- and he'll play...might not be what everyone wants/expects but the cup will runeth over in all the spaces that he needs to fill.

When he plays with Michael Landau in his Ringers band....it's tough to keep up with who is actually better.
