Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said told Republican senators late Tuesday that there are currently not enough GOP votes to block witnesses from being called in President Donald Trump's impeachment trial, the Wall Street Journal reported. McConnell reportedly made the comment in a private meeting with Republican senators. There has been a new push to hear testimony from former national security adviser John Bolton in recent days, following a New York Times report Sunday that said his upcoming book details how Trump told him security aid to Ukraine should be blocked until Ukrainian officials agreed to investigate Democrats, including the Bidens -- potentially undermining a key part of Trump's defense.
In today's news - the cult broadcast channel shunned one of its own:
The John Bolton who worked in the Reagan administration probably never saw this coming.
According to Fox Business' Lou Dobbs, Bolton, who has never drifted from Republican politics in his 40-plus years in Washington, D.C., is now "a tool for the left." That's what a graphic on Dobbs' show declared Monday night, while a zany web connected Bolton to "foreign policy RINO" Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) and former FBI Director James Comey.
I don't see why the GOP doesn't just agree to let the guy testify. Trying to stonewall on the issue only looks like obstruction and they trying to hide something.
Everyone knows what he is going to say anyway and won't make much of difference in the ultimate outcome. If he does testify, the GOP senators have a choice to (1) dismiss his testimony as grandstanding by a disgruntled former official to help sell his book or (2) accept the obvious that there was a quid pro quo but take the position that it doesn't rise to level of impeachable offense.
The “moderates” up for reelection are the ones who want the trial over as quickly as possible. The longer the trial, the more damaging attacks from Democrats. To the extent there’s any wobbliness it must come from senators who are either not up for reelection this year or in safe seats.
This is not counterintuitive or surprising at all. This is what we should expect. But it helps us better understand what is happening. And it should be instructive for Democrats running against these senators, and devising messaging against them, this year.
Cory Gardner — and seemingly all of the Big Six — are the ones demanding full support for the President’s cover-up. As a narrowly political, cynical calculation I think they are right to think this way. Because they are 100% committed to acquitting the President no matter what. Hearing more incriminating evidence or having the trial go on for one minute longer than necessary just makes that all the harder.
So every GOP senator cast the deciding vote "no" other than Romney and Collins, who were careful to come out for witnesses only after they already knew the vote count..
That should be useful in campaign ads.
(Might be time to start trying to fund senate races, right Mike Bloomberg & Tom Steyer?)
