Im confused. How does defining Judaism as a nationality prevent me from boycotting Israel on a college campus? Furthermore, I would think if you could classify a religion as a nationality, you could potentially exclude practitioners of that religion from the nation. Kind of like defining us and them. Sounds like a horrible thing to do, but perfectly aligned with nationalist ideologies held by a certain party.
"The Times reported the move would trigger a portion of the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964 that requires educational institutions receiving federal funding to not discriminate based on national origin. The Department of Education can withhold federal funding from any college or educational program that discriminates based on race, color or national origin, according to the Civil Rights Act.
Religion is not covered in that portion of the law so the administration would have to interpret Judaism as a nationality in order to potentially punish universities for violations.
Jared Kushner, the President's son-in-law and a senior White House adviser, pushed for the move, according to the Times."
Ahh... I wonder when Christians will scream to be their own nationality as well.. what a dumb idea.
Kushner conceived of a way around the First Amendment, and Trump did his bidding. It's a fucking horrible idea with a ton of negative ramifications, and there's no way it will survive a slew of lower courts or the Supreme Court.
I heard, but can't confirm without really looking into it, that Israel is the one country (except maybe Ireland) where the US will recognize dual-citizenship. It often works the other way around, with lots of countries recognizing dual citizenship with the US, but the US is pretty strict on its end with that. Israel apparently allows citizenship for people of Jewish descent without much regard to the country of their birth.
As for Trump's statements, it seems like just a clumsy attempt to pander to Jews, who he likes and sees as smart people who make good accountants, lawyers, and son-in-laws. He has been Israel's strongest supporter of any president in recent memory, but what he doesn't get is that most American Jews aren't single issue voters and many aren't beholden to the State of Israel or its policies.
And lots of Jews aren't even religious, like Jill Stein who identifies religiously as agnostic.
Speaking of Jews, its terrible what happened in that crazy shootout in Jersey City today. They say it was just some police sting operation gone wrong, but still weird how it all ended at the Jewish deli where three bystanders were killed.
He isn't pandering to Jews as a whole, but rather the far right wing of Israel. Although Israel was a a "Jewish homeland," it has generally been a secular state that affords freedom of religion. This little thing essentially recognizes Israel as a "Jewish State."
It's also the exact reason why we have freedom of religion built into the First Amendment. The British monarch is head of the Church of England, and if one disagrees with the religion, they can also be seditious and tried and convicted as such.
Act on the advice of rats like miller and kushner, worry about the fallout later. It's been the scum king's modus operandi since day one. Release the KAOS / Kraken. Repubs are fucked in 2020 for allowing this dangerous asshole to proceed unchecked.
While Israel is a modern, western style liberal democracy with freedom of religion, it also has embedded in its legal system the "right of return," which extends citizenship to Jewish people regardless of their national origin:
The right of return extends to anyone who has a Jewish grandparent or is married to a Jew, provided they pass a criminal background check and haven't engaged in activities against the Jewish people. For example, a lot of Ethiopians used the right of return to obtain Israeli citizenship and migrate there, but as a practical matter, many are treated as second class citizens:
On a somewhat related note, th Indian parliament has created an uproar with a new law extending citizenship to religious minorities from neighboring countries, provided they are not Muslim:
will the census be asking about Jewish Nationality now? Currently the census doesn't ask about religion but now that the Trump regime is re-classifying the Jewish religion same way Hitler did...
74 years ago World War 2 ended. Antisemitism is now on the rise both in Europe and the United States.
Posing under the guise of anti-Zionism, unfortunately even left leaning people are participating in this trope.
I'm no fan of Donald, but am concerned about how Jewish people are being denigrated by both the right & the left.
YMMV
