I think the acoustic guitar player's band hosts an outdoor festival each year. (greg-ulator, could you start digging up all videos of that?)

DUDE THAT'S JERRY...YOU FOUND HIM.

Jerry Garcia was supposedly banned in Japan (or they never went for fear of not being able to score drugs).

yes he was supposed to do an art show opening? and they had brochures and postcards printed up and everything in place.....then last minute he didn't want to do it.

I've got some of the postcards - little versions of some of his b&w prints

Japan is awash in opiates and acid.

Maybe these two incidents changed his mind?

Following his arrest in early May for smuggling heroin into Japan,
Rick Danko, singer and bassist for the
Band, has been given a suspended sentence. Danko was on a
five-show mini-tour in Japan when he received a package from his
wife that contained the opiate.During his trial, Danko told the Chiba District Court he had
asked his wife to send him some cold medication for which he had a
prescription; she instead hid heroin in a magazine and sent it to
Danko via courier. The judge presiding over the trial rejected
Danko’s story, but still suspended the two and a half year sentence
for five years.    June 1997

Paul McCartney also... On Jan. 16, 1980, he was busted at Tokyo’s Narita International Airport for trying to bring a half-pound of marijuana into the country.."We were about to fly to Japan and I knew I wouldn't be able to get anything to smoke over there," McCartney said in 2004. "This stuff was too good to flush down the toilet, so I thought I'd take it with me."McCartney can be glib about the incident in retrospect, but it was quite a harrowing time for him. Wings’ tour of Japan was immediately canceled, but the lost revenue was the least of his worries. Even though he swore that the pot was for his personal use, he was facing a possible seven-year sentence for drug smuggling.

a little internet sleuthing:

Original 1993 Parco Department Stores Jerry Garcia three poster set featuring a closeup portrait of Jerry. These posters were produced to be hung in the Tokyo, Japan subway system but were never used because this (art) show was canceled. A total of 10 sets of posters were sent to the Grateful Dead office in San Rafael for approval. Most were given away as singles making this the only complete set known to exist.

Jezus is everything on UTube? Here's Jerry's commercial for Japan:

Sounds pretty good

I went to a NRPS show around that time and Dawson was talking about how he just got back from Japan and how they were sent as a surrogate band because they wouldn't let Jerry into the country.

>>>>Bucket List - See a Dead cover band in Japan!

i saw the Zen Tricksters play in Yokohama, Nagoya and Tokyo in April of 2002. It was crazy seeing all of the Japanese Deadheads! Mushrooms were not illegal in japan at the time either, you could buy them at local head-shops, which added to the fun.

In Tokyo a band named “Big Frog” opened and later joined in and jammed with the Tricksters.

On the way into Japan I got pulled over by customs for bringing porn DVD’s into the country for a Japanese friend who had requested them. I found out this was very illegal and from now on when I enter Japan and they swipe my passport it says that I am a “pornography smuggler”. So I’ve got that going for me.

(customs took the dvds and let me go with a warning)

apparently the Jerry Japan image is still very popular -- who knew?...anyone need a XMas gift?

(If you wear that shirt, it's like Jerry's pickpocketing you or you're Jerry's Siamese twin head!)

<I got pulled over by customs for bringing porn DVD’s into the country>

Wait Bucky, are you tellin me that Japan doesn't have enough porn? You had to import it? (a friend told me they have plenty)

Or that your friend really, really, wanted some very much less depraved porn? Good ol American porn...... (that's what I'm guessing.)

Well, it was 2002 so internet porn wasn’t all that it is now. At the time in Japan, porn that I saw had the genital areas pixilated, maybe that has changed since then.

I was in Bangkok, Thailand before I came to Japan so all of the porn was from there but yeah I went for the American stuff because I’m patriotic like that.

Smuggling porn from Thailand....  There's a lot to work with there.  None of it good.

Watching Hiro Bobby playing all the Weir chord voicings is something.  These cats watched plenty of hours of GD video.  Hiro Jerry smoking too much opium -- his behind the beat Jerry leads are a little too behind the beat.  I enjoy Hiro Donna much better than Donna Donna.

>>>>Smuggling porn from Thailand....  There's a lot to work with there.

yeah I would have been ok but I folded up like a tent the second time they asked if I had any porn on me (they also asked about drugs and weapons, which I didn’t have).

Ahhh, here's that  Japanese festival stuff I remember coming across -- I seen to recall the Warlocks were the big Dead cover band back when I knew some Japanese Kimock fans who traveled to Bay area shows

I'm personally partial to Sardine Head once they get warmed up, as it's unusual name for a Dead cover band -

Yeah, these guys sound more seasoned than some of the younger bands. I think this is number 1 Jerry

Alan is the guy that chased poor Bluelight out of here, riggt?

^Incorrect.  Bluelight punched his own ticket.

Why yes poor Jeff, that's exactly what happened. I am Susan's assistant here at the Tubes and frankly she just got fed up with all the shenanigans.

Are you the guy with the 50 kids from 49 baby mommas or the haberdasher with a shoe fetish or some other shit-stirrer with a bad memory? Since revisionist history is all the rage nowadays, and you are so deprived of quality entertainment, please post your personal email so I can hook you up with an endless supply of the infamous

But I beg you to not get sidetracked with cinema and stick to the topic at hand -- Japanese Dead cover bands (or Dead cover bands that play in Japan).

A little over ten years ago I came across a bootleg Tiger Rose T-shirt in a market in Bangkok Thailand.  Bizarre!

back to the We Are Everywhere thread.. our favorite guy who covers the Dead ( or in this case the Dead covering Dylan)---- even in the steamy remote tropics of Asia!

Grateful Dead's Bob Weir in Concert in Koh Tao, Thailand -  Maggie's Farm

From the comments: I found about Bobby being in Koh Tao while I was on Koh Samui, staying in this Rasta-themed beach bungalow hotel. Three American musicians were there too and they told me about the upcoming shows. I thought it was just a rumor, but accompanied them via boat to Koh Tao a couple of days later. I rented a scooter and went to the other side of the island (opposite side from the main pier) at the designated time for the first show--and sure enough, there was a small stage set up with professional mics and speakers and there was a beach bonfire with a couple of dozen people already gathered waiting...Half an hour later, out stepped Bob Weir! Most of the European tourists had no idea of the rare treat they were witnessing--they just thought it was guys jamming on the beach.....I recall that the bass player was just some tourist dude who could barely play the bass at all, but volunteered to play since they needed a bass player.

on a not-so-related note......Kingfish in it's peak (dressed in the ever-fashionable coke-induced Good Humor man uniforms)  doing

* Although he did continue to perform after leaving Kingfish, Hoddinott never enjoyed that level of visibility again. His discography shows only his involvement in Kingfish and related recordings and a role in a band called Eric Morrison and the Mysteries. According to some posted news articles, Hoddinott reportedly spent time in prison on drug-related charges but details were not noted.

Damn Alan.   That is a wild story bro.

The GD has always been an almost purely American phenomenon and aside from seeing a Jerry (alongside other dead American rock icons) on a mural in a hipster club somewhere in Latin America, haven't seen or heard anything Dead related abroad.   Had no idea the GD was a thing in Japan.

I am going to be spending one night in Tokyo on my way over to the Philippines in March and it would be cool to catch a GD act, but my time will be limited and plan on soaking up the neon night life in Shinjuku.

>OSHINO DEAD 2019 "What's happened at base of Mt Fuji !!"

A pretty goddamn kickass Sugaree is what happened!!!!

The tents, the dress, the scene....pretty damn cool.
