The Irishman is the story of Frank Sheeran, a mob hitman and World War II vet who develops his skills during his service in Italy. Now an old man, he reflects on the events that defined his career as a hitman, particularly the role he played in the disappearance of labor leader Jimmy Hoffa, his longtime friend, and his involvement with the Bufalino crime family.

Some of the cast:

Robert De Niro as Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran

Al Pacino as Jimmy Hoffa

Joe Pesci as Russell Bufalino

Bobby Cannavale as Felix "Skinny Razor" DiTullio

Harvey Keitel as Angelo Bruno

Stephen Graham as Anthony "Tony Pro" Provenzano

Kathrine Narducci as Carrie Bufalino

It opened the NY Film Festival last week, the Times raved about it, it will be streaming on Netflix Thanksgiving weekend, better than football

The usuals plus Harvey Keitel . Looking forward.

and Ray Romano

Glad I renewed my Netflix account.

On the one hand sounds like a good movie, but should we be glorifying scumbag mafia hitmen? Really? This guy should have been dead many yrs ago. Now still profiting from killing people.

The book is based on a biography of Frank Sheehan called You paint houses don't you. The book is a good read and Frank has been dead for years. No one knows what happened to Jimmy Hoffa, but this book gives a good accounting of what might have happened. The movie is close to three hours long. It's not playing in the big theater groups, AMC or regal. I'll prolly have to drive to Ithaca or Binghamton to see it. I hope there's an intermission, it will be worth seeing it in a theater.

I get that, but on the same hand, most people can tell that this is entertainment...

Also, don’t forget Scorsese a head, so it’s alright (winky face)

Saw this last night on Netflix and was impressed.  OG.

Films like this do give Scorsese bragging rights to shit on super hero movies.  I watched it at home, but recommend seeing it on the big screen.   Its playing at the Hollywood Theater here.  However, I already sat through a three hour showing of that old silent sci-fi film "Metropolis" on Saturday (with live pipe organ accompaniment) and couldn't do another three plus hour screening.

Another great film that is currently playing is the South Korean dark comedy "Parasite."   It gets progressively darker and less comedic as it rolls along, but a very well done production.

are you talking about frank sheeran, the title character? he died in 03. making a movie about something like this isnt glorifying, its exploring the human condition. youve got to dive deep into what it means to be a terrible person, the good and the bad, to really learn new things about what it means to be a good person. the guy has a section on war crimes on his wiki page that look far more twisted than anything he could have done with the mob.

would have loved to see this as an 8-10 episode miniseries. now that the golden age of serialized drama is in full swing, even the comparatively super long irishmen at 3.5 hours just doesnt seem like nearly enough time to fully flesh out a complex story. that needs 6 hours minimum imo.

Scorsese point about super hero movies not being cinema was because the story may take twist and turns but in the end you always know what is going to happen. They are masterpieces of art direction, and cinematography, and the acting is top notch, but Wonderwoman is always going to escape whatever situation she finds herself in.

You can add prequels to the list as well. If an interesting story isn’t part of the movie going experience you might as well just play video games.

Lawn!

It was pretty entertaining. A good period piece. Pesci is great.

You really have to invest a healthy dose of belief with DeNiro's role. Laughable when Pesci refers to him as "the kid" with DeNiro sitting across from him, looking like a 70 year old with a thick layer of cover-up.

could have cut a good 30mins.

I fell asleep. The mob is boring.

I heard you clean pools.

kinda boring imo.

Boring like a regurgitated political diatribe?

not as boring as regurgitated political diatribe. close tho.

>>>>>Boring like a regurgitated political diatribe?

Bryen doesn't talk about the mob and his threads go through the roof.

I thought the last 30 minutes was fascinating.  Scorcese nailed the aging end of life aspect.

Thumbs up. Truly an epic spanning four decades.

Got to hand it to Deniro, that was a lot of screen time and he did pretty well for a man his age.  Although the classic Deniro scowl got old after a while.

With all that CGI you think they could have fixed Peschi's nose.

Shoulda used 40 year old actors and put aging makeup on them rather than try to use CGI to try to make 70+ year old actors look younger.  Just looked silly.

That CGI couldn't keep DeNiro from looking like an 80 year old almost falling over as he tries to act like the tough guy "stomping" the corner store owner.

Pacino reprising the same character he's played in every movie he's been in since Scent of a Woman, just with a different haircut.

Definitely didn't live up to the hype....

I like Scorcese movies and ultimately end up watching all of them. And I will watch this one as soon as I get a chance. But seriously though, the gall of Scorcese to call anyone out considering he's been rehashing the same fucking mobster story line for the past two decades seems ridiculous. For fuck's sake do something original. The one time he tried he made that movie about the Jesuit in Japan which TOTALLY sucked. So yeah, Marty, shut the fuck up about Marvel and maybe show that you're capable of doing something that isn't about Irish and Italian mobsters.

Um, The Last Waltz, Shine A Light?

>>>Marty, shut the fuck up about Marvel

On the other hand, I think Marty has earned the right to comment on modern film making.

And I enjoy seeing comic book fans get their Batman panties in a bunch when their favorite movies get called out as trash, so please Marty, don’t shut the fuck up.

My panties are strictly Captain America - Batman is DC. Hello?

And yeah, he's made some good rock documentaries, but it's not exactly what he's known for, is it? I think it's pretty undeniable that he's milked the mafia cow for every last drop of milk.

Shut the fuck up, Marty!

I'm not going to complain about a movie I watched on the comfort of my couch with some of my favorite actors ever and didn't pay a dime for it.

Keep on keeping on Marty!

Tips to watch it as a mini series...

>>>>Pacino reprising the same character he's played in every movie he's been in

Some actors (including Pacino and De Niro) just play themselves whatever the specific role is and it works. Clint Eastwood and Charlton Heston are others like that who come to mind.

If you've seen casino and goodfellas and any other deniro based mob story then there is really no reason to see this boring ass movie. Maybe there is a decent 1 hr and 45 minute movie somewhere in the midst of this three and half hr drag but really it was just more of the same bullshit

Not sure why people thought Pesci was good in this. He plays an old Italian guy. He also is an old Italian guy in real life.

>>>Some actors (including Pacino and De Niro) just play themselves whatever the specific role is and it works. Clint Eastwood and Charlton Heston are others like that who come to mind.

Totally agree, Ken. Brad Pitt, George Clooney are two other examples that come to mind.

>>>>My panties are strictly Captain America - Batman is DC. Hello?

my bad dude. im definitely not up on my comic franchises. TY for the info.

Come on, Bucky. Get with it. wink

Are people watching this in one sitting?  The five I know all broke it up.

I hear Joey Gallo and his fateful ending are part of this film. The subject of a Dylan song.

The "execrable" Joey, per David Marsh's review of a Dylan & The Dead show. laugh

Do they blow up the chicken man in this movie?

I liked the movie.

I understand that the "clam bar in New York" is still open and plays off it notoriety as an over priced tourist trap in what is left of Little Italy:

The movie will probably give it a boost in business.

Blow up his house, too?
