DNB @TXR FRI 6 DEC, tix in sale now

^^^ on sale, not in sale, naturally.. posting from my phone causes goof-ups every time.

One thing I know for sure -- won't stay in the AirBnB boat from hell at the San Rafael Marina again, LOL.

Are they going to slow roll Hawaii announcement again?   Not really helping anyone when they wait until December to make those dates official.

be nice just to have a couple of gigs in a row here.

Can we get an all ages Ashkenaz?

Agree... wish they would add a night 2 at a different venue in the area.

Harvest Show !! ?  Soon Come !!

Killing me with these single shows

By my recollection, hawaii announcement has usually always been around/after thanksgiving (post harvest tour)

WOW, our wishes have been answered!!!

DNBHarvest.PNG

Just realized that the dates make it difficult for me to do entire run,,,, I think I would skip Hopmonk, begin @ TXR and take off the following week so I could go to Fernwood.

Just dreaming right now! laugh

Advice appreciated, as I don't know what the Fernwood venue is like but I've been to Big Sur before, as well as Hopmonk.

Is Santa Rafael a Xmas pun?

double dippin' n' double trippin' in the sur?!

Nice.

Anyone know how many tickets they will sell for Fernwood?  Was just reading up on the Fernwood accommodations -- funny that the show starts at the same time as campground quiet hours...

Should we assume that there are two shows at Fernwood 12-13&14? or are there 5 Fridays in December when on Nelson Time...

$$ fernwood...limited options in that area...

got an rv spot.

Walstib -  Fernwood ticket site says 2 shows, Friday and Saturday...

The Fernwood Tavern is tiny.

I got a motel room. There were only 6 available when I booked.

I just got Fernoood tix for both nights -- prioritizing those over other shows!

Going to grab a tent site or tent cabin ... it'll be sunny, right?

shit man, that's a lotta money....

Well, if I'm gonna travel, it's going to be for 2 shows.... cheaper than lodging in San Rafael for 2 nights! Got friends to split the tent cabin with...

I'm hoping to pull the trigger for something in HI if that happens.

tent cabin = https://www.fernwoodbigsur.com/tent-cabins.html

Usually it's a tent on a platform w/o heat or electricity --  though I almost got the adventure tent w/ electric heat, those are limited to 2 people in 1 bed -- the tent cabin has more flexibility  - allows 4 people split between 3 beds... and it's riverfront -- we have cold weather camp gear, so it made the best sense to me --

Hope you all enjoy the fernwood shows.

Fucking stupid.

would be nice to know if HI is really still an option....kinda probably about the same amount of $$.....i can't commit just yet....

pretty burnt on the phil n' jill bar n' grille...

and the hopmonk is just ok? i can't remember...

you're right....looking at fernwood...its really tiny....like may be nuts to ass tiny.

yeah, but it will be OUR fucking stupid...

I can easily pass on TXR... Hopmonk is a smallish venue too, but it's surely larger than Fernwood.  For me, the problem is that Hopmonk is on a Wednesday night and it would cause me to take too many vacation days... and I love Big Sur area.

Wow. I was a little too late to the party for a motel room. But we booked something just down the street. The tent cabins could be fine for intrepid folk, of whom we are not... And the regular cabins are pretty pricey. Ok then, stupid or not.

And yeah, the tavern is seriously tiny.

Any chance they would open the doors to the deck or even put the band on the deck?

In December? When the show starts at 10pm?

Sorry, I'm from Oregon --  40 degree nighttime temps don't phase me at all.  We had 33 last night and I haven't even pulled out the wool clothing yet, ha!

I looked up the typical low temps for Dec in Big Sur --- 39-40 degrees is the average for that week in December.

Just wondering if Fernwood ever has bands play elsewhere on the property.

I've never seen a photo of Big Sur that explains the appeal.

Ran the Big Sur Marathon Relay several times. The climb to hurricane point is awesome=Explained...

The wind and the cliffs look awful.

For me, it's just personal memories of good times spent at the Pfeiffer state park and other spots in the area after the 87 Laguna Seca GD show!

There's some place now that rents yurts on a bluff looking over the ocean, but spacing on the name...

Hello phriends, I live very close by, so if anyone needs help with lodging choices,  or has any general questions about Big Sur area, feel free to reach out to me ~ [email protected]. See you at the show.

Yes, Fernwood is tiny. Similar to Moe's Alley in Santa Cruz

Yurt spot is called Tree Bones and is about 45 minssouth of fernwood

Oooohhh she’s ready!

appreciate that

Hola Amigos.....I fixed the days of the week on the website.......too much tequila last night!

I am here right now........https://www.flickr.com/photos/98023458@N08/albums/72157711550465891

Now carry on......Adios

I bet you even had electricity Dan.  Nice shots.

Let me explain my short outburst above. I don't think I have ever been there(Fernwood).  I absolutely love the area.  Llollo, aren't those falls awesome?   It was mostly me being pissed cause I cannot afford to go there. Too far to drive home after each show, like I can Hopmonk and TXR.   And if I have any thoughts of doing the big Island in Feb or March(Turts I think that Hawaii will happen), then I really need to pinch pennies until then. I traded in such excursions for a house and a dog.

They must have figured a way to make it worth their while to do that small of a place.  I'm sure the shows will be epic.

Dan, I love so many of your pictures of birds.

Dan, I love your bird !

well i called yesterday, the curt woman on the phone said capacity is 63?!

i pulled a 2 day for $100.

better get 'em if ya want 'em....

good to hear on HI markd. i'll take the lady to the islands instead of a cold december in the mud :)

most likely pass on the wed hopmonk. txr is a possibility.

Prolly see y’all at the first one or two.

Big Sur is kind of a silly expensive place to have a couple shows in December, but then again it is nice to see some non-terrapin venues finally popping back up. I get why it’s a convenient spot to play for a few reasons, but I also feel like the saturation of DNB gigs at that place has taken the “high adventure” part right out of the equation.

Either way, you folks have fun. I’ll be at the cup.

Yeah, the Fernwad (to quote a friend who used to play there several decades ago) is more in line with old-school funky out-of-the-way DNB venues. Kind of a pain in the ass, but high adventure indeed. See you all somewhere or other.

well, i can put that camping gear to use. i'm pitchin' a tent.

wait, why's it say 10pm?

its also the nearest show i can get to. i'm basically a local...

I got a cabin at the Big Sur Lodge and ticketed for both show at Fernwood, I am stoked!!!!

What’s the DNB equivalent of “Buckle Up Kids”?!!

>>>What’s the DNB equivalent of “Buckle Up Kids”?!!

a few iconic DNB phrases come to mind... but none of them are really as concise as the Buckle Up thing...

High Adventure

Such a good idea at the time

Dedicated Maniacs

Get this birdie off of the ground

I love everybody I know

Keep on rockin' like a fool

I'm ragged but I'm right

There ain't no present like the time

Keeper of the key

looks like I'll be hitting the Hopmonk and TXR gigs...

gotta skip the Big Sur shows b/c I already have plane reservations out of OAK that weekend, heading to central NY State for Xmas stuff with the fam

swim if you can

float if you don't...

Hopmonk and TXR. Can't wait.

>>>What’s the DNB equivalent of “Buckle Up Kids”?!!<<<

Smoke 'em if you got 'em.

Excellent! I think my fav is "I love everybody I know"

Leave no turn unstoned.

LOL MarkD, love that saying too!

Some people on the DNB FB group are whining that there are no spots left at Fernwood.

Untrue. One must be *logged in first* to see availability.

It is, true, however, that the motel rooms and cabins on site are sold out.

All of the green icons in the image below are still available...(as of 1:27pm PST Sunday 3 NOV)...

Fernwood Nov3.png

I booked TC1 -- and almost changed to AT3  w/ electric heat yesterday (but considerably more $$) -- but realized I could just find a mountaineering friend from whom I could borrow a propane tent heater if the forecast is colder than I expect. Voila!

Ripplewood cabins 831 667-2242 enlightened

Glen Oaks 831 667-2105

next question?

Well there you go people. That Ripplewood place is just down the road and seems to have lots of availability at fair prices.

No spot taken, but it looks like adventurous fun.

I've put a lot of thought into this and I think I'll just do TXR.

and Hopmonk.

custied up. but hey, its basically the same $ for hotels near txr

Meditative Afterparty? LOL ....or maybe the 10pm show will run til 3AM?

Have also been reading about Sykes Hot Springs -- never been -- looks like fires closed down the trail a couple of years ago.

Update

Post Ranch Inn is really super excellent, we we were there in August.  It's not the kind of place I would think of just to stay for a DNB show but yolo.  :-)

YOLO angel

No FOMO devil

Just called Fernwood. The kind woman said 150 capacity.

Can highly recommend Deetjen's for it's history and funky cabins... though it is the furthest south among all lodging listed.

It's also a great breakfast / dinner spot. Went there for R&R between Cal Expo and Shoreline runs.

Sykes was kinda sketchy last time I visited with naked hippies living around the springs. YMMV.  Esalen is way cool, tubs overlooking the cliff/ocean...

Thanks WALSTIB for the Sykes update -- I finally found info on the .GOV site about the state of the trails.

Similar situation at some hot springs in the PNW.

Deetjen's is an awesome place, like an old homestead with great food, a mellow vibe, and classical  music. Nice to sit by the fire place on a cool nite or foggy day. Nice rustic cottages to stay in as well. Popular with the honeymooners. Very romantic setting in the redwoods. Just sayin.

Any suggestions for the off day, Thursday 12/5?

Lunch and Margaritas on the veranda at Nepenthe is always fun. Interesting shopping at the Phoenix shop there ( say hi to my wife Susan working in the boutique).

Driving the old coast road (dirt) from Andrew Molera Park to Bixby bridge is a nice low energy trip with awesome views of various ecosystems. Lots of redwoods and sorrell covered valleys.

Walking down to the Big Sur Rivermouth at Andrew Molera if you like a mile walk on dirt road. Can be windy though.

Art shopping and lunch at the Coast gallery 10 mins south of Nepenthe.

i'll come up with a couple more suggestions, stand by

Hey Treeflo, too bad I didn't know you were local when we visited the area this summer.  I probably did say hi to Susan at the Phoenix shop!  Dinner at Nepenthe was great, we ate outside next to a hilarious group of French tourists who kept poking fun at the food :-)

Condor viewing at "wild bird" cliff turn out ( Grimes pt)

Swimming at the Big Sur river gorge ( pfieffer big sur state park)

Beach combing for jade nuggets at Jade cove.

Surfing at Sand Dollar beach or Willow Creek.

Trip to Carmel for Carmel mission tour, expensive dining, walking on squeeky clean white sand beach and viewing colorful sunsets.

Sitting by Big Sur river or ocean  stoned on Edibles smoking fatties.

Drive south to Cambria to see elephant seal colony on the beach

Monterey wharf for clam chowder and seafood.

>China rider<
Roshambo told me you were in town but we were at the Pebble Beach food and wine event. Next time drop me a mssg if ya like.

^ will do!

Thanks Treeflo, love your activity ideas. Never been to Jade Cove.

Jade Cove is one of several coves along a stretch of cliffs and beaches that have veins of Nephrite. Not actually true Jadite ( which some enthusiasts are quick to point out). Nonetheless there are some spectacular semi precious stones ( up to thousands of pounds) that cane come out of the ocean or from the ground. Check out my friends sites: https://www.bigsurjadeco.com/ Willow creek is a good place to start looking.
