Bob Dylan Tour Starts Today/Robert Hunter

Forums:

Bob Dylan starts his fall "collage" tour today at UC Irvine, CA.

I think it's a strong possibility that Dylan will play a Hunter song at one of his three California dates (Irvine, Santa Barbara, Stanford).

Based on what he has played in the past, and how much respect he has for Hunter, Friend Of The Devil, Alabama Getaway and Black Muddy River are possible. (As are countless others).

Time will tell.

Sorry to miss Irvine but looking forward to Santa Barbara and Stanford.

I think it would be funny if he plays Friend of the Devil at the show Turtle goes to.

But will anyone be able to recognize it?

New drummer Matt chamberlain

Silvio or possiblly Beyond Here Lies Nothin off Together Through Life.

His new vocal stylings lend themselves to Forgetful Heart... Duquesne Whistle would be swell as well.

that would make me chuckle lance.

seeing him tonight. will report back.

i very much like some of his latter day material with hunter.

Yes Fish, new drummer. I think it may be a good shake-up for the band. George was there for almost 20 years,

so a change may prove interesting.

I mentioned the songs I did because I think he would honor Bob Hunter by playing one of Hunters own songs, not a song

they collaborated on.

In any case, no matter what he plays, I think based on the last couple of tours it will be strong and not mailed in.

Hope you have a great show tonight Turtle. Please let us know what you thought!

Ok, with that criteria how bout black muddy river

It would not surprise me to also see a new guitarist in Stu's old spot. I sense Nashville dude.

FYI, anyone headed to the Frost be aware that they’re adding multiple rows of folding chairs (all closely connected) on each terraced row in the lower half of the Amphitheatre- this allows them to squish more people in and appease the meat in your seat crowd. They’re also limiting blanket size/sprawl to help make room for everyone and it seems an effort to encourage more food sales and less picnics. Dylan is sold out, 8000 capacity.

I may have an extra for sale too. I purchased my ticket before signing up to be a volunteer usher...

Looking forward to the reviews. Have a great time. Seeing him on the 30th.

This is a great thread.

Nashville guitarist Bob Britt. In the band.

>>> the meat in your seat crowd<<<

75-90% of a Bob Dylan crowd.

And God forbid they limit people at a sold out show to the space they occupy and not allow all the room they want for a wine & cheese feast and space for baby to play.

If it's a sold out show you get the space you occupy.

Pretty basic stuff.

Have fun "kids".

Great set..,. I’m assuming Lenny Bruce is prob a one off for his birthday?

Wow, can’t wait

>And God forbid they limit people at a sold out show..

they're also doing it for Willie, not sold out.

worked fine for JRAD without the rows of chairs.  Yes, having picnics and bringing kids is something that many people like about the Frost.

eventually they will eliminate all picnics and have all assigned seating, no more GA shows.

Times they  are a changing wink

Pay for your ticket and don’t complain...

That "Lenny Bruce" sounds great.  With Bob Britt in the band from the "Time Out Of Mind" sessions, you all should be seeing a "Cold Irons Bound" soon, maybe tonight.

Have fun tonight at the Frost.

Opening with Beyond Here Lies Nothin' was a nice nod to Hunter.  Expect some more of that tonight in Palo Alto.

Show was good. Bob was animated and seemed into the performance.

nice to see our tiny gym packed. think it sold out or very close. 4200 capacity.

thanks for the setlist, i tried to keep one but there were a few ?'s.

nice night. security was kinda nuts with no photography. paul blart mall cop "warned" me....

masterpiece was very different, dylan was super funny in his delivery on it.

north country fair was fantastic. and was more than pleased with the encore choice.

serve somebody was great as well.

Great show last night! Dylan was in strong voice, energetic, bounced and danced around the stage - played guitar a little, as well as piano and harmonica.

Sorry I didn't see you, Turtle.

The venue security was a little annoying - chasing down every cell phone they saw LOL

yeah, was cool to see him on guitar for a song or so!

did seem "animated". we were side stage basically so could see him facing us during all the standup piano tunes.

sorry to have missed you.

nice to hear better sound in that place than in the past.

That’s Dylan’s Camp that pushes the tight security re cell phones and cameras etc

The show in Palo Alto is Monday, and I'm a bit surprised it sold out, but maybe I shouldn't be.

That show was going to be a game-time decision for me. I figured I could buy a ticket at the door, but if it's going to be packed that place is not the easiest venue to navigate and the sound will likely be a bit too muted for me. If you're going I would highly recommend getting there early to get as close to the stage as possible, even if that means sitting in a dreaded chair.

Still, the recordings from last night sound good and the place is only 20 minutes away so I may just show up and see if I can pull a Jammin' Joel, get in at a fair price and check it out.

Last night was one hell of a show. Talk about a guy with 100% intensity and focus on his craft. I've seen him play every song

he did last night, but he brought most to a new level, while grinning manically through the whole thing.

As someone wrote a long time ago, it was one of those shows where Bob Dylan came out and decided to

show everyone why he's Bob Dylan.

I was literally worried at the end of the show (which was over by the unheard of time of 9:15 because hey, it's

Santa Barbara!), thinking that if he tries to put as much force and focus into every date of a 38 show tour, he will be hurting.

But he's a trained professional and I'm not. He feeds off of this and two new members in his band really seemed to have kicked

things up, big time.

Weird to walk away thinking, "I would have driven that 6 hours just for that performance of Honest With Me".

See some of you at the Frost!

Can't Wait

This Santa Barbara show is smoking! Thunder on the mountain the way it is meant to be played! Bhln , it ain’t me, girl from the n country, not dark yet all superb

Sheesh. Nice reviews of the Palo Alto show.

Not.

Get with it people! We want to know how it went!!!

Slackers.

Funny story that I may have told before...Cinco de Mayo '92, we're all camping out at Greyhound Rock, midday as a collective of about 10 people, we decided to hitchhike in 2 separate groups to the Warfield to see Dylan, everyone made it to the venue and helped each other score tickets and each one of us made it into the show.  At some point during the first set Jerry walks onstage, grabs Dylan's black & white Fender Stratocaster and jams Idiot Wind for what seemed like 17 minutes or so.

jammin joel Jedi

decided at " last minute" to try - went 3 1/2 hours early to hang and enjoy - my home town palo alto nostalgia rush flowing hard and heavy - lines were like only 40 people at first - then super long - sold out--

patience >> $20  >> fifth row dead center >> great peeps >> perfect sound

amazing show - stunning from the first note - just wow - I really had to gather myself at the end.......

amazing band - (and I super loved the bass player - on every song he was pure magic)

Bob simply obliterated my expectations                                  (GTTS = the only way to catch lightning in a bottle)

WOWZA

God Bless America - we don't have to make it great again - it sure was great last night

nice work joel!

The Mission Ballroom

The Neverending Tour's next stop.  Enjoy, Denver folks.

Just added a D.C. date on December 8, at the Anthem, after the 10 night Beacon run.  Tickets on sale Friday.

I got front row for Ithaca and gonna hit one show at the beacon for good measure. I’m psyched for this tour

I could swear I heard a Liberty soundcheck. Yes, excellent Frost  show. Dylan was strutting his stuff..

I agree, strong show at the Frost. It was amazing to be back there after 30 years; my last shows there were the last GD shows

there in May 1989. That part of campus has changed a bunch, with the new(ish) Bing Center built right in front of the amphitheater.

Was running late due to life, found the miracle free parking spot on campus 1 block away. Still had a ticket to dump. Found a freak from Oregon who was ravening  at the people in line for the show. He had a white sign with Dylan lyrics he was ranting about, so I asked him

if he needed a ticket. He said I have $40. $100 ticket, sold. Now to get in before Bob starts.

Done.

Always amazing to have a couple of "pin-drop" moments in an outdoor show with 8,000 people (during Lenny and North Country).

Not Dark Yet. (But it's getting there). More highlights, almost everything!

All and all just a great show with an attentive crowd and an engaged performer giving his all out there.

If you can go to a future date on this tour, you should. I doubt you'd go away disappointed.

((( * (GTTS = the only way to catch lightning in a bottle) * )))

Good for you Fish. That venue in Ithaca looks pretty crazy.

As my brother lives in Manhattan, I'm considering a couple of Beacon shows myself.

I went to the Frost show and saw Bob and his band from about 20 feet away from him dead center in front of his mic stand. I've seen him over 100 times easily and I can honestly say that this was without doubt the most stunning performance I've ever been to. I was speechless at what I witnessed. There is only room at the top for one when you talk about the greatest songwriter, bandleader, and entertainer ever and in my opinion what I saw Monday at Stanford was full confirmation that Bob stands alone forever at the top. Tonight I'm seeing a guy who reminds me of a young Dylan sometimes named Tyler Childers. It's a good thing it's him and I'm happy my wife brought me onboard the Tyler bus and will drag me to the rail... but honestly I'm not interested in much right now other than Bob Dylan and the experience he gave me the other night. Anything else is sort of square wheels after seeing that well oiled machine at work.

nice shakey! i'd like to hear that.

childers played here last night and i had wanted to go for months. show had sold out already and wasn't up for the mid-week work night la drive. have fun and report back!

Right there with you Shakey

(Even though that may have been my only Bob Dylan show, I picked the right one)

could feel it

Literally and figuratively!

I have a good hunch on what's up with Bob and the new found energy and enthusiasm.

Great stuff gang keep the reports flying. Audio from Denver shows him cruising along this tour at a very high level

Hunch?!?

>>>Hunch?!?<<<

PEDs.

He’s in love? Finally getting together with Mavis Staples?

>>Mavis Staples?

nah, she would remind him too much of carolyn

^^“Not long before he died Robert Hunter said to me, “I don't listen to Dylan for the words any more, I listen for the phrasing.”
