Wife and I attended the Autzen Stadium 1978 GD show,, with Eddie Money, the Outlaws, and Santana. Wife was unfamiliar with Money, who opened the show. The woman next to us asked her how she liked the band. She said "The Band's OK, but they should get that dancing fool off the stage!"
The woman replied, with so much hurt in her eyes, "But that's Eddie Money!!!".
I will admit to listening to some Money on occasion.
Dude played his role in Detroit - he was Mr. Opening Night at Pine Knob every May since the 80's through right recently.
Pretty much my entire adult life, now that I think of it, Eddie Money has been an inside joke between myself and 3 friends. Our first official beer of the summer together (after Victoria Day or as it is known to locals, May Two Four) is opened to an Eddie Money reference. I will live the rest of my life acknowledging summer only after first thinking of Eddie Money. Well played, Mr. Money. Well played indeed.
In the 80's I was in high school and Cobo & Joe Louis were only accessible by $29 ticket and bus from the local arena. Buncha yahoo's on a bus goin' hard for an hour until the border served their function - but Pine Knob was an hour door to door and my folks were fine with me taking the car there at 16 or with friends all through high school. I worked at a grocery store at 15 with the sole intention to be able to buy pavilion seats to shows that I could take my lady friends to. To the way he was my official start to summer, I am cool with him going out on a full moon Friday the 13th. As an artist, I bet I could rattle off a dozen of his tunes - probably more than .38 Special or Billy Squire, less than the Baby's or Bad Co in bands I knew from the FM dial but didn't own. As the guy who opened up the place I went to dozens of times before I was 25 - he gets a smile and a nod from me.
I've had a soft spot in my heart for Eddie Money since I saw him speak at a memorial service for Bill Graham, his former manager. He broke down out of his love for him. Gotta be a good guy... Rest In Peace, Eddie...
