> just let me be bitter that we couldn’t do shit like that without a ton of detention.
Bitter? You should have just tried harder. I graduated H.S. at age 16. It wasn't too difficult, just had to double up on English and PE (the only 4 year requirements at the time).
Greta is a genius though and probably was homeschooled for years. It was reported that she's autistic too. Inspiring to see a young person who is so passinate and articluate about the most important issue facing humanity.
I'm always blown away by how many families "pull" their kids out of school and take a trip to Telluride during a regular school week.
Some teachers will allow travel if the student does assignments that the whole class did, and extra work related to the trip, maybe not to Telluride, but a historic trip with museums art etc, on the other hand , what's the message when you pull your kids out of school to go see the 4th Indy Jones movie? Yes I knew people who did this, really, was it only playing one day, ? not like it wasn't going to be around a few weeks, and it sucked anyway
yes, "we" are indoctrinating millions of kids around the world to press "our agenda" down the throats of your head-in-the-sand, corporate earth-fucking plunderers.
she probably watched sesame street or some other sinister liberal brain washing propaganda....
Thom must be one of those people who believes the 1% of climate scientists who say there is no global warming. Those same scientists are also paid by Shell and Chevron to say those things. At least that Koch brother kicked the bucket.
This young woman seems to be riding the rough waves of "emotional problems" with an incredible amount of passion, focus, and resolve. One person's weakness/disability is another's strength.
And kudos to those who have been supporting her to follow her muse. Go Team Greta!
In the 90s we"pulled" our kids out of MS/HS a couple of times to go down to CA to see the GD. Didn't seem to do them any harm. They caught up with their schoolwork without any problem and both graduated on time with good grades. One is now a county executive and the other owns her own business.
Goddamit, who told Thom about the plan to indoctrinate young kids to repeat our baloney agenda? Fuck. Cat's out of the bag, we gotta try a new strategy folks....
I'm a teacher, and I'm not a fan of parents who REGULARLY pull their kid out of school for some vacation. By regularly, I mean there are some kids who do this at least once every year, which really bothers me. I don't think parents should treat education as an option.
On the other hand, if a special opportunity arose, or there's some kind of special occasion or event, I can totally relate to wanting to take your kids out of school for the event/travel and then committing to having them get up to speed. Life is life and things happen and education can be recovered.
In summary: treat school like optional, take kids out whenever you want because you don't like the summer rush? Irresponsible bullshit. Special occasion, family event, once in a lifetime opportunity? Take 'em out and live it up.
As for Greta, she's a total bad-ass, God bless her soul. She's doing amazing work and I am in absolute awe of just how cool teens are these days. I've met so many who really are so smart, so proactive, so full of great ideas and who can express themselves with great authority and clarity. They really impress me, considering I was worried about Star Trek: The Next Generation and getting drunk on weekends at age 14....

Greta’s very corporate children’s crusade
Behind the schoolgirl climate warrior lies a shadowy cabal of lobbyists, investors and energy companies seeking to profit from a green bonanza
Greta Thunberg is just an ordinary 16-year-old Swedish schoolgirl whose fiery visions have convinced the parliaments of Britain and Ireland to declare a “climate emergency”. Greta’s parents, actor Svante Thunberg and opera singer Malena Ernman, are just an ordinary pair of parent-managers who want to save the planet. Query their motives, and you risk being accused of “climate denial”, or of bullying a vulnerable child with Asperger’s. But the Greta phenomenon has also involved green lobbyists, PR hustlers, eco-academics, and a think-tank founded by a wealthy ex-minister in Sweden’s Social Democratic government with links to the country’s energy companies. These companies are preparing for the biggest bonanza of government contracts in history: the greening of the Western economies. Greta, whether she and her parents know it or not, is the face of their political strategy.
More alt-right fringe hit piece propaganda loosely peddled as journalism from you know who. Same as it ever was. Today’s helping of mental diarrhea is brought to you by Dominic Green; the same opinion author that has delivered such classics as:

>Unfortunately, Thunberg was also greeted by a wave of misogynist nastiness, largely coming from allegedly grown men in both Europe and the United States. The attacks on Thunberg were in the same vein as those on Ocasio-Cortez, accusing her of being too stupid to know what she's talking about and denying that her voice is one worth honoring. A writer for the conservative Washington Examiner claimed that Thunberg is a victim of "child abuse" and that her mother "pimps their kid out," explicitly drawing a line between forced sex work and climate activism.
