great comic relief here in this thread! especially the cartoons. But if anyone wants some great live music tunes,Tune In on your computer to High Sierra Music Festival,89.5 Nevada City. All weekend.Bart would have given you all the links, sorry I am not .
Could the Grateful Dead have happened anywhere other than America?
The obvious dynamic would be freedom of travel, it doesn't seem that it could have possibly taken place in Europe other than an occasional tour, what with all the borders and all...Asia, maybe, possibly, in certain regions, but probably not. Africa, South America, Australia/New Zealand, Central America, the Middle East?
If you subscribe to the notion that most if not everything happens for a reason, there's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be, it seems perhaps divine providence that the driving force of the revolution of consciousness took place in America, pressing the envelope of western civilization, forging a new path for humanity, and the ultimate frontier...the mind, it couldn't have been allowed to reach it's ongoing potential anywhere else.
"Go west young man go west!" It's interesting that if you look at the advancement of civilization, it has a westward pattern, the farthest westerly point of the continental United States is the most beautiful region of the most beautiful county of the most beautiful state of the most beautiful country on the face of the planet Earth...if it weren't for Garcia, would it be anything similar to the bastion of freedom & liberty that it is today? Would the Pacific Northwest?
The migration of humanity trends westward, that path took the species to the New World, then exploring the frontier, over the Rocky Mountains, and ultimately the coast of California where some young men got together and started playing music.
Could Jerry have become the musicologist he became anywhere other than America? Could he have developed that "Muddy River Country" sound anywhere else? If it weren't for the bounty of the musical harvest that is America, Garcia would've still been a sublime musician, but you wouldn't have Grateful Dead music as you know it today.
This country is the embodiment of the human experiment of Liberty, there's no more beautiful land on all the Earth to explore...Jerry's love for this country was undying, it's no coincidence that the Grateful Dead happened, is still happening, and will continue to happen here, let freedom ring!
I've been reading 2 books that John Doe put together, an oral history of the LA scene from mid 70's to now, each chapter written by a participant , they are good reads. To that end my listening recently has been X, John Doe (solo) Blasters, Dave Alvin and Los Lobos, with a little Go-Go's thrown in
