Antifa v. White Supremacists - part of the sights and sounds of summer in Portland. The annual season of street fighting kicked off in earnest this weekend with a new alleged Antifa tactic - throwing milkshakes loaded with wet cement:

I’ve heard rumors about these “cement milkshakes” but have yet to hear or see any actual usage. I’d like to see some of these folks mixing said cement and then “throwing” it because I imagine it would be quite funny.
“Authorities said they received reports that some demonstrators during the noontime action threw "milkshakes" that were actually cups mixed with quick-drying concrete, a powder-and-water mixture that can set in as little as 10 minutes and cause physical harm.
"Police have received information that some of the milkshakes thrown today during the demonstration contained quick-drying cement," the Portland Police Department tweeted. "We are encouraging anyone hit with a substance today to report it to police.”
As of Monday morning, there was no physical evidence or additional reports of the use of the so-called "concrete milkshakes." A request for comment sent to the Portland Police Department was not immediately returned.”

I take no issue with the
I take no issue with the flagrant use of violence against white nationalist, separatist, hate groups like the proud boys, patriot prayer, American identity or any other groups who seek to divide and destroy healthy communities. No issue. Sometimes words just aren’t enough.
It is only a bigot who would rather (divert) argue and split hairs regarding where they came from, or what protected rights they are exercising, or what nuance of they are for or against, or how they are “only” fighting to preserve their “culture” (of exclusion) but it really doesn’t change the intent of their traveling racist hate gatherings. Why else wave flags attached to a weapons? If you are a white person with more than three brain cells knocking around in your head, you know exactly what the intent is here.
Of course the police protect and side with them.
Some of those who work forces are the same who burn crosses.

The lesson that civic governments should have learned after the events in Charlottesville is that groups who espouse hate speech don't merit permits to gather. Free Speech in a civil society does not entitle one to hate speech.

Well I do pick sides but don't dress up like Antifa and don't engage in the nasty street fights.
I have been to a number of these events over the past few summers (the protests, not the furries gatherings) and it does seem a little bit like stage acting with very predictable routines.
A group of right wing yahoos come in from out of town and are met with much larger groups of counter protesters made up of both more normal left wing demonstrators and concerned citizens and the cohorts of Antifa with their matching outfits and shields. The cops will then have the two sides separated with insults be hurled back and forth:
At some point in the afternoon, the cops will start announcing on the loudspeakers to disperse, but it sounds like Charlie Brown parent gibberish and nobody leaves. Then something will get thrown by either side and the cops will instantly start shooting tear gas, rubber bullets, and flash bangs into the larger left wing crowd (yes, they do pick sides) and charge in grabbing people.
This causes most of the non-Antifa left wing protesters (like me) to run off and disperse for the day while the riot cops escort the the white supremacists to safety. However, once the tear gas and flash bangs start going off, smaller groups of the white supremacists and Antifa will break off and use the chaos of the police action to hunt each other downtown and engage in some of the nastier street fights.

What annoys me is when the black bloc tries to get the cops to pick on them. Ugh, so predictable and boring. Hey, do you mind, we are having a demonstration here about ISSUES, not about you trying to get a cop to shove you so you can do your soccer dive and scream that you are oppressed. I am very supportive of anti-fa, and there is a time and a place for guerilla tactics, but I'm sick of demonstrations being hijacked by kids who just want to get outraged at the cops, especially when police misconduct isn't even the issue of the demonstration. I've been seeing the same story played out for almost 30 years.

No doubt. Your are down there to protest the white supremacists and let them know they are not welcome in your town, not to pick fights with cops. That being said, the Portland cops do take sides and are unnecessarily rough with the protesters. Many are just plain dicks and won't hesitate to violate your civil rights. I get the sentiment and there are worse things teenagers and 20 somethings can be doing with their time. Still, when the Antifa folks start doing their "All Cops Are Bastards" chant or flinging things at them, its the wrong place and time and distracts from the message.
Jesse Jackson was in town after the Max train stabbings in 2017 and he discouraged people from going down and protesting the Proud Boys assholes because it just gave them attention they didn't deserve and otherwise wouldn't get.

Yes, so why do cities' civic
Yes, so why do cities' civic leaders tolerate Nazis and other groups that espouse hatred? They say they are protecting free speech, when the reality is they are contributing to the inciting of riots. Charlottesville's city officials learned this lesson the hard way. Portland can keep allowing these hate-mongerers a platform, and they will perpetually have riot season. Better to just ban all groups from using public space who preach hate. That's what the Germans did with the Nazis after WWII. I usually appreciate what the ACLU does, but protecting the civil liberties of the uncivil does not add up.
