"A fund has been established for mandolinist Jeff Austin following a recent medical emergency. Those wishing to donate to help cover the cost of his medical care can do so via a Sweet Relief Musicians’ Fund page established for Austin.
The Sweet Relief Musicians’ Fund page states, “Jeff is in Seattle with his family, receiving the best care possible.” The message also notes that any updates will be posted to the fundraising page and to Austin’s Facebook page."
This doesnt sound too good for Jeff Austin. I wonder what happened.

Sounds like he had some pretty serious drug abuse issues in the past. Hopefully that has nothing to do with it.

Jeff got the boot a few years
Jeff got the boot a few years ago. Guess his personality rubbed others in the band the wrong way. A band firing its front person and then hiring some replacements to keep going on with the same name is certain to create some bad blood.
Meanwhile, some of the gory details of Jeff's condition can be found here:
http://forum.phish.net/forum/show/1378450818
Scroll down about half way on the first page to the link called "spoilers" and it will take you to a firsthand account of Jeff's on stage meltdown last week. Hope he pulls through, but sounds like he might be really fucked up if he lives.

Howdy folks! As you are aware, our dear friend Jeff Austin has been sidelined for a few. We'll be adjusting this weekend's Keel Brother shows to help fill in for him. We will give you the full rundown once we get it all figured out.
In the mean time, we do know that we will be playing the Back Home Appalachian Arts & Music Festival on Saturday with the The Travelin' McCourys.
Please keep Jeff in your mind and prayers as he recovers.

Jeff Austin
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a beloved family member, mandolinist, singer, songwriter and founder of The Jeff Austin Band, and Yonder Mountain String Band, Jeff Austin. Austin passed away June 24, 2019 in Seattle, Washington. He was son of Eileen Austin, husband to Devlyn, and father to Lily Rose (12), Penelope (5), and Jude Patrick (2). He was a dear friend whose music touched the lives of so many, and will be sorely missed.
If you would like to make a contribution to help his family, please visithttps://sweetrelief.org/jeff-austin-fund/.

YMSB with Mickey and Billy at NWSS in 2010 doing Franklins Tower. Probably my best memory of Jeff. It smoked and he was so genuinely stoked to be playing on the same stage as his musical heroes:

This news is so sad; three young kids and so talented.
I remember when Greensky Bluegrass used to to open for Yonder. Jeff and Yonder really started something that didn’t exist before them. Part of it was jamming with great acoustic players at louder volumes with a good modern sound system. But, a lot of it was Jeff.
Why do talent and demons seem to go together. So sorry the demons got Jeff He will be missed so much by those he touched.

Hoover, not an OD, but
Hoover, not an OD, but another kind of self-inflicted death. The saddest kind. Before that, it was said that his cocaine use was occasionally problematic, including with respect to his relationship to YMSB and some onstage antics. I don't want to dwell on those aspects of him, but yes, he had more demons than most. But damn, he gave us a lot of fine fine music over the years, I'm super sad. Yonder kinda sucks without him and I enjoyed Jeff Austin Band a ton. I'm sure we all have some memories of some crazy nights with Jeff Austin. :(

It really sounded to me like
It really sounded to me like he was having little mini strokes , not knowing of his substance abuse issues of past and or present . Then move forward to Telluride and altitude exposure with ischemia or possible hypoxia ... could be the final straw ! This was what came to my mind immediately when they said it happened at Telluride and used medical emergency as the term for his condition, I am sure it is still being investigated medically. I heard nor read nothing of an OD or suicide attempt.
Just so sad really, so talented and such passion...not to mention young !

Man this stirs up some pretty
Man this stirs up some pretty complex feelings. I will always love Jeff Austin for the music and enjoyment he provided. Demons okay but he was also more often than not, the spark in the room. He was the reason we all bought our tickets. He had a true gift, and he brought a style of entertainment, speed, and attitude that hadn’t really ever been seen before in bluegrass. I hope he is remembered for that, because we really lost a good one here. He had spoken somewhat plainly about depression and those things across the years, it is sad to think that may have gotten the best of him. It is a powerful force indeed. Peace to his family. Poor kids.

Lyn, he died in Seattle. I
Lyn, he died in Seattle. I could be wrong but I dont think anything happened AT Telluride, just during the festival weekend. Don't know why they'd fly him all the way to Seattle in a medically induced coma. There is a pretty consistent rumor about cause of death but I'll let people find it for themselves if they want to look. I hope it isn't true, but either way, super sad. 3 kids.

Didn't happen in Telluride
Didn't happen in Telluride (as far as I know), but the mood at the festival on Saturday was somber and surreal ... and the stormy weather didn't help matters.
Having said that, I can't help but wonder about the timing and how it may have affected Jeff? It was Yonder's 20th anniversary at the TBF and they had typically always played a late night show on Friday night and then a main stage set on Saturday afternoon.
Regardless of speculation, it's all extremely sad!

Man... The first time I
Man... The first time I caught YMSB was at Bonnaroo in 03. I had heard them before in some live recordings prior to that, but their live show was something else. It has nearly everything to do with Austin. He was the spark if that band and it clearly showed on stage. I was never disappointed by any of the dozens of performances I would see them play over the next decade or so. I still remember this show going to the wee hours of the morning:
02/14/07 (Wed) Jupiter Bar & Grill - Tuscaloosa, AL
Set 1: Red Bird, Death Trip, Another Day, 40 Miles From Denver, Little Rabbit, Crow Black Chicken, 20 Eyes, Steam Powered Aereoplane, 8 Cylinders, Traffic Jam > 2 Hits And The Joint Turned Brown > Traffic Jam
Set 2: If There's Still Ramblin' In The Rambler (Let Him Go) > Southbound > Ramblin' Reprise, Damned If The Right One Didn't Go Wrong, Sideshow Blues, Rain Still Falls, Ten > Angel, Finally Saw The Light, Maid Of The Canyon, Country Boy Rock & Roll, Keep On Going > Ruby > Follow Me Down To The Riverside > Ruby > Keep On Going, E: Dim Lights, Hill Country Girl
RIP Jeff...
