I got an 8 (cobbler, chickenfried steak, gumbo, jambalaya, corn bread, red beand & rice, fried green tomatoes, and frog legs (the frog legs were disgusting).
I scored a 28, although the frog legs I ate were in France, so I'm not sure that counts. They were great, but I was wigged cause they were still connected by their little frog butts. Also, is chicken and dumplings a southern thing?????? I should get a bonus point for having eaten snapping turtle, which isn't on there.
Although I have been functionally vegan for 28 years, I still qualified as "Sho'nuff Southern," which I guess is not surprising since I grew up down there and my mom's side is serious old school Southern.
I still make boiled peanuts for holidays and special occasions.
Southern comfort food is all the rage in this town and there are a number of places that have excellent vegan versions of many of the classics listed above.
I have a spot near my house right now, just a take out window, where you can get some boooooomb ass smothered pork chops. Like to kill you but damn it is tasty. They also had gumbo from November>>>April.
How is fried okra not on that list? That's a stone cold southern classic that hardly anyone else eats.
Hoppin' John is beans (like black-eyed peas) and rice, cooked with onions, and often smoked meat like ham hocks. Traditional on New Year's Day with greens for good luck and prosperity.
What the hell is congealed salad? Like a jello salad?

That's another food tradition I still do (sans the ham hocks). According to Southern lore, the tradition goes back to the winter of '65 after General Sherman and his army tore through the countryside burning and looting everything in sight. Apparently, they didn't think the black eyed peas were fit for human consumption and let them be, which was lucky for the locals who were left with something to eat.
Every Damn one of them + the others that others listed. But I am old & like food. Where is BullDog Gravy & CatHead Biscuits? Where the hell is Pickled Shrimp & SheCrab Soup.
