Born in New Orleans, Rebennack was a session musician in the 1950s, playing guitar and bass, later switching to piano after he injured his left ring finger protecting his bandmate, Ronnie Barron, from gunfire.
Can't tell you how many times I saw him open for Jerry and the JCB in the late 70s and early 80s--a bunch. I remember one in particular, when Jerry did his one solo gig at the good ole Capitol in Passaic, the Good Dr opened that one-tasty. He was a true individual and a walking encyclopedia of music and jazz. Play on, Brother John

Well, nobody went out like Col. Bruce Hampton. Nobody.
RIP Dr John. Interesting tidbit about where Dr. John got his stage name. From Wiki:
"Dr. John, a Senegalese prince, a medicinal and spiritual healer who came to New Orleans from Haiti. This free man of color lived on Bayou Road and claimed to have 15 wives and over 50 children. He kept an assortment of snakes and lizards, along with embalmed scorpions and animal and human skulls, and sold gris-gris, voodoo amulets that protected the wearer from harm."
Was fortunate to see Dr. John perform several times through the years from coast to coast.
I met him once at Blues Alley in D.C. in 1989 when I walked into his dressing room while looking for the restroom. He was sitting there with his girlfriend (wife?). They were all decked out in their voodoo garb, said hello and politely told me I had to head down the hall.
That was the first time I saw him, followed by a memorable night at Wolf Trap with The Neville Brothers and Buckwheat Zydeco, numerous shows at Seattle's Jazz Alley, and finally, at what turned out to be his last public performance, at the 2017 NOLA Jazzfest. I took the pictures above of him that day. That's him taking the stage for the last time and sitting and playing with his new band, the Gris-Gris Crew that included Charles Neville, who I also saw for the last time that day.
He played The Maritime Hall late 90s I sure he was Pissed off Said a lot of Shit that night. If anyone can find a copy lte me know. Peace FARE THEE WELL GOOD DR.

Dr. Kohn opened up for Jerry at my first few JGB shows at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic in 1981/1982.........I had the pleasure of seeing him many times over the ensuing 38 years.......RIP brother!
The Dr. was part of Ringo's All Star Band in '89, probably the most talent I've ever seen on one stage.
Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Jim Keltner, Billy Preston, Clarence Clemons, Nils Lofgren. Joe Walsh, and Max Weinberg sat in for almost the entire show that I saw. Five have passed on.

His family is still working out the funeral arrangements, but tributes are already happening. Here's some footage from one Kermit Ruffins put together at the Mother-In-Law Lounge:
Saw him every chance I had, 14 times and the last time I took my wife and she loved it too. She passed him up about 10 times because she was not familiar with his music.
