Whoever was getting over paid by millions to do more restoration work on this symbol of times that should have been forgotten fucked up and it's burning down. That's basically all the fucks I can give towards this.
Huge treasure to humanity and a glorious building.
Enormous loss.
Phil knew what the monks could achieve in certain spots in these sacred, specificially designed (or tuned, if you will) spaces that work on so many levels. He talked about it one of his books and gets into how the buildings themselves are instruments that modulate and amplify certain frequencies.
Huge loss.
Great architecture is humbling and connective and we all need more of that. Especially these days.
Not only is an enormous loss it's also a huge loss. Lol.
Commissioned by kings and built on the backs and purses of the poor...but yeah it's a real treasure to humanity. Maybe 2019 Donald Trump humanity but it sure as hell isn't an example of my understanding of humanity.
>>> Deadheads are usually pretty good at separating the art from the artist. <<<
How can anyone deny how great the incredible flying buttresses are, the glass work, the carpentry of the ceiling, etc.? I celebrate the workmanship, the skill, the people who created the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris. It was breathtakingly beautiful. This is the same conundrum with which we are so often faced; the work vs the overlords. Fuck the overlords, I have no positive feelings about the religious origin of the cathedral, but I do believe in beauty and as 73guy said, the connective power of the place has huge value.
"Seeing today's news about the fire at the Notre-Dame Cathedral has been heartbreaking.
Imagine the faith of the people who built this great stone wonder. They broke ground in 1163 with the hope that someday their great-great-great-great-great-great grandchildren might attend the dedication Mass, which finally took place two centuries later. Master masons supervised the construction, but the people did much of the grunt work themselves for free — hauling the huge stones from distant quarries, digging a 30-foot-deep trench to lay the foundation, and treading like rats on a wheel designed to lift the stones up, one by one.
And then imagine being a simple bareheaded peasant, entering the dim medieval light of the church for the first time. Take a minute to let your pupils dilate, then take in the subtle, mysterious light show that God beams through the stained-glass windows. And listen as the priest intones the words of the Mass that echo through the hall: Terribilis est locus iste — "This place is awe-inspiring." "
Sounds like the main structure survived and I am sure they will do a good job restoring the wooden parts. Hoping all hunchbacks are safe and accounted for.

Back to possibility of contractor: one would think there'd be insanely strict protocols for a building of this stature and age?!? Before every show at the Sheridan Opera House in Telluride, a member of the staff makes an announcement about how there's zero tolerance for smoking (even vaping) in light of it being an historic structure just over 100 year's old ... which is not even close to the age of some historic structures in New England ... let alone Notre Dame. You'd think everyone who worked on it would be required to take some sort of class, if not sign off on a checklist of "do's and dont's"?
Equating the perverse actions of the Catholic Church, the poor that are fleeced daily in the name of Catholic guilt, & the generations of poor that Notre Dame was built by with a guitar player is false equivalency defined. No worries the art & relics are safe. The stained glass stations of the cross will be built. No worries, the donations are already lining up to go right in the pocket of the church. The building insurance & the contractors insurance will more than pay for the fire but yeah... art
