Cured Meats> Sopressata > Meat Friday alll-in-one thread

Forums:

Was on the CHEESE thread a minute ago, and it is clear that the Zoner public needs a cured meats thread! Discuss! laugh

Also, did any Dan Patrick show fans hear the songs from their Meat Friday song contest?

Pretty hilarious. My fav was the cover of Dream On:

Meat in Friday’s!

meat in (that’s the high part)

meat in, meat in,

A while back we had leftover cured meats (prosciutto, pancetta, etc) on a coast trip, so we decided to cook it all up like bacon...

made crostini's w/ the leftover breads, cheeses, sauces, dips, etc,  delish!

Picked up some prosciutto and killer Freestone bread on my way home from Bryan's party (LOLLO where were you?!) this AM. Gonna copy Daylight's Mt. Tam sammy today.

Freestone has my heart!

Oh, DISE, I was crushed that I missed the Occidental party. I watched most of the stream on FB.  Makes me want to be at the late April shows even more.

I'm sure it was a very special evening.

...and to return to the thread topic... if you ever see a dry-cured Fuet from Spain in a store -- buy it!

It looks like a gnarly mini-diameter salami for snacking.

Looks like this: https://www.spanishtable.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=4...

I can't hear the term "cured meats" without thinking about these people:

SNL Skit.jpg

"For three glorious days, I handed my love-ah plump strawberries and smoked duck meat. She purred and giggled under the weight of my thrusting body, her mouth agape with a mixture of pleasure, longing, and duck meat."

Oh, girl. Next time you'll be there. April shows aren't that far from now! Hang in there!

Hope this site cheers your day a little more laugh

Thanks Dise! heart

The Zone is my refuge, to be sure.

We should put together a cheese and charcuterie board pot-luck for the next gathering!

I'm game! My email is in my profile.  I could bring stuff from Portland and I know there's a Spanish Table store in Berkeley - or there used to be.

Are you going to Oregon Country Fair or Eugene JRAD? Another place to cross paths.

Sweet! I'll bring the cheese! I think we can count on Ken D to bring plump strawberries and smoked duck meat lol

OCF is a strong possibility! A big group of friends all stay at Darling's camping together. I've missed the last few years so I'm really into going, just depends on how much time I can take off work.

Whether or not you're Catholic, you shouldn't eat meat on Fridays during lent.  By the way, that's something that has always befuddled me, that a community of people that purport to ingest psychedelics has such a fascination about eating dead animals?  It's not right.  How can you ingest psychedelics on a regular basis and eat dead animals?

Dise - wonderful, keep me posted.  We have always stayed at Zumwalt, but I'm open to new campgrounds.

Is it crazy or chill at Darlings in the evenings?

Our group always pools our money and rents a pair of portolets w/service from the same company that serves the campground. They gave us a keyed lock for them so just our group was able to use them. Sooooooooo much cleaner than the public portos there omg.

Darlings is pretty wild at night, as I recall, more a place to roam and trip on the weirdness around every blade of grass - not a place for a restful sleep. That said we usually make it into the fair during the day, at least for the good bands, even if we're a bit rough around the edges. Will definitely stay in touch!

I've been watching a lot of westerns lately, I understand trying to survive on the frontier where eating meat would be a necessity, but now that we can go to the store and buy organic vegetarian frozen entrees...why eat dead animals?

The Torah, Bry, God’s law, specifically states what meat we can eat and how it must be prepared. To eat kosher meat is to be Godly. Are you going to argue the word of the lord?

Nowhere in the Torah does is speak about not eating meat on Friday. That’s just a tradition that comes with your idolatry. It does, however, tell us how to observe the Sabbath, sundown Friday until sundown Saturday. I’m guessing that you also scorn God and not follow his laws of Sabbath?

>now that we can go to the store and buy organic vegetarian frozen entrees...why eat dead animals<

Evolution...we are omnivores...Not a fan of cured meats myself

Ok, I didn't mean to offend anyone, apologies if so.  It does fascinate me though, just something I've noticed over the years, all the discussion about eating meat, which honestly surprises me, I don't get it...it seems like if someone were grilling burgers on the lot back in the day, that it was really frowned on, but people just go on & on about it for years on this board as if it were fashionable...lots of discussion about bacon, eating this animal, eating that animal...I don't get it, what's up with that?  It's a free country, I'm not trying to be judgmental, I just don't get it.  As a "for instance", I can't seem to recall one vegetarian discussion, like there's some carnivorous thing that's some twisted backlash from the days when mostly everyone, or it certainly seemed like mostly everyone was  vegetarian.  What would Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez think of this activity?

Who cares  what AOC has to say about it... it's an idiotic question.

You don't have to get it.

Personally,  i haven't eaten cow in more than a quarter century,  but it is because I do not care for the flavor. Same for cured meats, i just don't care for them... Some folks do.

Not sure why you are so hung up on what folks were doing in the lot twenty years ago.

kidding about AOC...an attempt at levity

^Fair enough. But i believe that the rest of my post is valid.

It's a choice,  you don't have to get it, or agree with it.  As a libertarian,  i think you would understand this.

As far as what was happening on the lot all those years ago, it's all just memories and stories.

I realize that Lumber, you're correct, just making discussion.  Although I do find it curious, I'm guessing 95% of the zone eats meat?  I still don't get it.  What's up with that?

Why does potus love Big Macs?

Probably because he doesn't listen to enough Grateful Dead music.

^Although I do find it curious, I'm guessing 95% of the zone eats meat?  I still don't get it.  What's up with that?<

it tastes good. Makes people happy. And some people just do not care for vegetables.

What GD songs could convince the potus to stop eating meat?

     The Other One?

Nobody talks about vegetarian food because none of it is as tasty as a slab of grass fed steak.

Bear had interesting ideas about meat, wouldn’t you say? He was one of the preeminent psychedelic warriors.

I'm aware...Bear was certainly unique in that regard, off topic, but have you ever watched the video regarding the Ice Age standing by the pond at Kesey's place?

I should say his theory of the possibility of a future ice age, rather than the ice age

The problem isn’t meat, it’s corn-fed meat. It causes a nasty vicious cycle that has profoundly negative effects on the ecosystem and our  bodies.

     Part 1:

BrianK: Totally agree about grains in meat. Bad stuff.

Bryen: I only started this thread not because I'm a big consumer of meat, but because the separate CHEESE thread was going off-topic, so I thought it would be fun to start a separate thread. It wasn't meant to be a "meat is superior" thread.  Meat products have been marketed heavily as the answer to the western high-carb diet (from the USDA pyramid developed way back when)...I personally prefer preparing and eating vegetables more than meat, but I do eat meat because getting enough protein is super important as one ages. Yes, beans have protein too, but they also have lectins, which is an inflammatory substance that exists in many plant foods that I love. So I must be choosy...trying to find my way.

I have been trying pescatarian since thanksgiving,  vegetarian plus seafood, not too hard to do and so far so good.

It's cool, I didn't mean to sound like the food police, I've just noticed what to me seemed like a disproportionate amount of discussion about meat on Viva & the old zone for years and I always thought it peculiar, I didn't mean for that to sound judgmental or anything, more of just a curiosity.  Some of my best friends eat meat.

It's simple, Bryen: Marketers and TV networks have done a good job at promoting all things meat and BBQ related.

It’s actually even more simple than that: the desire to consume meat is human, as represented by the eating habits of most cultures throughout history.

We talk about meat because it’s infinitely tastier than tofu or seitan.
