Law enforcement in Maryland seemed to like to pull me over and search my vehicle. They were always very nice about it, offering not to give me a citation in exchange for permission to search the car.
as a native ny'er with reason to cross the river on occasion, honestly can say never had an issue in nj, not at the cap. byrne , giant stadium or even roosevelt stadium back at the '74 shows. that said , wouldn't live in that state, not now not ever (J/K Ski, Zeke, Got J and Bluenote)
Aside from a Ratdog show in Baltimore, I've never seen a show in the south ... but can only imagine. In fact, I'd be lying if I didn't admit I have a small fear of seeing a show in the south.
There were always concerns with cops around Deer Creek and Wisconsin didn't exactly use kid gloves either.
Used to be afraid of Nevada, not so much anymore ... but Utah.
GD in Charlotte 1991: Got arrested in woods between parking lots smoking a joint with some buddies by undercover cops with guns pointed, my one friend had the handgun barrel imprint on his chest afterwards
Greensboro in 1983 was arresting all vendors and folks partying. My buddy got popped an i believe the holding cell was under the venue until he was transported to the local court..
It’s pretty amazing I only got arrested once at a show. I mean we did travel from city to city in packs following a drug band - all proudly plastering our cars with stickers to make us easier to find.
Once driving home from Providence after a show we heard a loud banging on the underside of the car. It went away for a second and then happened again, so we pulled over to see what was under the car. While we were on the side of the highway another car pulled over and a bunch of deadheads jumped out and looked under their car too.
Turns out it was just the rumble strips to warn you about the upcoming I93 - RT128 interchange. The cops could of set up shop there and watched as we pulled ourselves over.
Maybe it's just me but NY's not a problem. Except once, encountered a slight harassment, lasting 10-15 minutes at the most, on the way to a Nassau Coliseum show. I'm here a lot, too - been living in NYS most of my life. Usually have NY plates, so maybe that's why they leave me alone.
Anyway, DC was typically the boundary of how far south I would follow the tour. I think '85 may have been the only exception - Atlanta & Richmond VA, because yk, '85. There might be other exceptions, but generally, I did not prefer the South, no offense intended of course.
But New Jersey....!!!!! In the mid to late 80s I had a late-night encounter with two LEO's there. It was super unpleasant, completely terrifying, damn near life-altering (& definitely not for the better). Not on the way home from a show, just trying to take the shortcut through NJ on the way back upstate from NYC. Fortunately, those particular LEOs were totally incompetent and there was no K9 officer in their car, otherwise I'm sure my life would have turned out way differently. Probably would have missed my chance to have children, probably would never have been a zoner would never have met some of my friends, wouldn't have had a job to retire from, etc. Shoot, I might even still be stuck in Jersey today, if those dudes were any good at their jobs, but as it turned out, I slept in my own bed that night. Or at least, made it to the house in which I kept my bed; I vaguely recall being far too shook-up to sleep that night.
Long story short (kidding! Lol, it's still me) but anyway. After that night I stopped having stickers on the outside of my car, because I never, ever, ever, ever want to be in that situation again. Thirty years later & it still makes me shaky and short of breath, just thinking about that night. The details have faded but the feelings remain!
Didn't take the shortcut through NJ for the next 20 years, maybe longer. Still would rather not.

Maryland was pretty horrible.
Maryland was pretty horrible.
Cops on horses made seeing shows at Landover a really unpleasant experience.
I was smart enough to avoid the South entirely. Maryland was plenty South for me!
