Damn! This hurts. I have not seen any major news outlets cover this, but some West Coast blogs are reporting the death of Guitar God Dick Dale at age 82. I’m glad I saw him blow the roof off that sucka a few times. He even gave me a Station ID for Homegrown RadioNJ “I’m Dick Dale the King Of Surf Guitar & you’re listening to HomegrownRadioNJ ~ Listen to the Thunder!!!” Thunder and attitude was exactly what he delivered. I saw him only 3 times but he left a searing impression on my mind and soul. First time was in Golden Gate Park in the 1990s in San Francisco. I had never heard such thunderous music! Next time was years later at Maxwells in Hoboken, having won free tickets from WFMU! Lastly, pictured here at Brooklyn Bowl, shows usually Produced by Dick’s friend and protege, Jake Szufnarowski . I’ve never had my Soul rocked and shaken so, especially by a Septuagenarian, in between lengthy but savvy storytelling by The King of Surf Guitar Himself.

I remain once & Forever a Dick-Head!

RIP Dick ..... A SURF Music Legend

Fuck very sad news.

That m'r f'n cancer finally got him. No superlatives could suffice. He was Da Shit and we all own him a huge debt of gratitude, especially anyone who ever played a Stratocaster thru a stack of Marshall's. Was lucky enough to catch Jimi's idol a few times, once at Toads Place where I walked into the dressing room before his show. I was awestruck, he was alone in the room stringing The Beast.

Tho I knew he was ill I'm kind of shocked, he was one tough cat. FUCK !!!

RIP King Richard

I will never hear surf music again

RIP I saw him open for Commander Cody at the Palomino in L.A. and at another bar in Venice Beach in the 1980s.

A trend setter for sure.

Rasputin, don't despair completely. While no one can replicate Dick Dale, there are a lot f bands that carry his flame. I'd humbly suggest you check out The Mermen from San Francisco.Definitely carrying the flame...

Rasmataz, I’m sorry for your loss.

Huge bummer RIP Dick Dale

RIP, never got to see him.

wow that sounds rad jaz. did you see lots of shows at the palamino?

The Mermen - Thanks I'll keep an eye and ear out for em

There was a killer band outta Boston that kept his vibe alive for a while but sadly they broke up - The Strangemen. True disciples. Told em how much I loved their sound how it reminded me of Dale and they practically adopted me. We jawed about King Richard all nite. Those who saw Dick know what I'm talking about. Just an immensely powerful shred monster. To hear him play Hendrix was a top 10 joy of my life. Guitar drums trumpet, he shredded em all. Never be another like him. Dickhead Forever.

Thanks King !!

He played an in-store at Amoeba in Hollywood when I worked there.  He was dealing with tinnitus and could only play acoustic.  Still shredded.

RIP Surf & Hotrod Guitar King

Amazing Grace - 3rd Stone From the Sun

When Jimi says, 'I will never hear surf music again' on the original 3rd stone, it was a dedication to Dale who was in the hospital battling throat cancer. Jimi would go see him every day. Everyone thought he was passing but he pulled thru. Maybe from jimi's love.

I think that is the only time I went there, Turtle.

Seem to remember getting free tickets for the shoe.
