I haven't been to the Frost since the early '90's.
Hoping to go.
Part of me thinks that JRAD may be more intense than what I would normally expect from that pastoral venue, but it looks like I'll have to check it out for myself.
>>>Part of me thinks that JRAD may be more intense than what I would normally expect from that pastoral venue<<<
Didn't the Hallowed Q play the Frost? Did you go to that one Johnny?
Personally I think it's really cool the place is re-opening for shows, but I've always much preferred the Greek to the Frost.
IMO the sound was much better/more powerful at the Greek, and I hate to broil with the sun setting in my face during a show, and I'm assuming it will continue to be afternoon shows only at the Frost, where there is very little/none shade and it will likely be damn hot in August.
On the plus side, it's chill venue, it's always fun to goof around on the Stanford campus, and it's only 20 minutes from my house!
Will it sell out? It will probably come close, but that venue was always WAY better when it wasn't full, so on a personal level I hope it does not.
List on this site seems to be pretty accurate to my recollection (The definition of luck is right place right time I guess )
Two shows for sure I remember but don't see on this list October 9, 1970 or 71 sly Stone- I want to take you higher white long fringe jacket with White sunglasses arms in the air an image I will hold forever fknnn amazing band his decline in the story is kind of sad just an amazing talent
and a sunrise performance by the cast of HAIR

Maybe there some industrious person that wants to update and post all the set list for the Grateful Dead shows (or Phil or the new riders or rat dog shows or Jerry shows ) that were held there
curious historians or YOUNG whippersnappers that Want a glimpse into the history of rock n roll should actually look at this list IMHO
There were a number of things that had to be upgraded/renovated for shows to happen there again.
And if you want to draw touring bands you have to have the infrastructure to handle modern sound systems....... and big lighting setups if you want to have shows after dark, which most touring bands do since they're paying for & lugging around their fancy lighting rigs.
And nighttime shows sell better.
I don't think the renovations will mar the place that much. It's not like they put in seats & luxury boxes.
I get that it would be cool if it was still just a grass hill with a little stage at the bottom that is rarely if ever used, but I think it will be even cooler to get to actually go back there and see lots of shows instead of remembering 30 years ago when we used to see one or two. Personally I am happy about that, and I don't think what they've done looks that bad.
>>>whats parking like for this venue<<<
I would assume there will be plenty of parking in the fields around the venue that they use for the football games..... for a slight fee.
All good and not quite better than remembering 40-50 years ago 5-10 every year
It's sacred ground but unlikely it's been desecrated
Yes and trees and grass ( where I went to high school) are way cooler than the concrete Greek (where I went to school)
Sorry no pictures but I was near the outside of it a couple months ago
Almost all of the fields are still there more than enough parking (there's a new band building and the Bing center for the arts or something but other than that Way easier than the Greek not that I'm comparing
I was so much younger then, I am younger than that now Time marches on but I'm super stoked even if it's not my favorite band it is a step in the right direction
So what's up with the large white cover(tent?) shown in the image I posted? Is that temporary? a finish photo shows its way worse. They should have just repaved the slab if it was needed. Ugh.
It served phil well in 2002.they could have just left it alone and the legendary Frost would draw talented musicians that would have packed that place ..the way it was.
its was a meager ask but I will ask again to the group.. what is parking like for this venue? never been to the Frost before and I am excited to go in August.
Stanford does allow tailgating in the official event pay lots and may even allow cars to stay the night there, they don't seem to kick out the cars after football games.
plenty of RV's parked overnight on El Camino along the campus. if you can snag a spot there, it's free and a short walk to the Frost.
we tend to park at the lot across from the Container Store (Stanford Shopping Center), near the Mausoleum on Quarry Rd. Although will likely be walking or riding bikes to the venue.
there are plenty of campus parking lots where there is free parking and you'll avoid the traffic mess getting in/out of the "official" parking lot. try the Tresider Union parking lot, also free on weekends, or near the Art Museum if it's not blocked off, that would be the closest free parking.
>Has anyone who did presale gotten their official tickets yet?
When I downloaded the mobile app ‘flash seats’ according to the directions on the receipt, the tickets appeared - seems like they really are going paperless and just want everyone to use the app and scan their tickets at the gate.
That 2x Greek->Frost was quite the weekend. High times. A heavy GD vibe.
Why would the Frost be overrated? Beautiful space, beautiful campus, usually beautiful weather. Also pretty rich in band history. Maybe an audiophile could poke holes in the venue but not sure it matters all that much in this case.
You don't need to be way up front for good sound. I wasn't way up front at greeks either. And having been at both of those then the frost I stand by my statement that the Greeks didn't sound way better, as you claim. I mean I remember that weekend clear as day. The Frost, imo, sounded as good as Berkeley
Other than daylight who "rates" JRAD as anything other than a good & fun band? Nothing earth-shattering, but they can be dynamic and can get into a damn good groove.
The Frost is a good & fun amphitheater, and now with shows being able to go into the night it will likely become more dynamic, and thus a better one.
>The Farm. Campus nickname, derived from the days when horses rather than students roamed in what previously was the farm of university founders Leland and Jane Stanford.
Got front row triple VIP inner uber innie reverse double waterfall for only $5270.00
>>>E. Jrad is over rated
I might agree but they are fun. I was a hair disappointed with the valentines show. Felt a little gimmicky at times with the deep lows and immediate extreme highs. Was interesting the first three times they did it but by the tenth time I was well over it.
OK E, if I HAVE to choose I say that because almost no one truly raves about JRAD while many rave about the Frost then by default the Frost is "over-rated", as many places of lore can be.
But if Phil Lesh was in JRAD I would likely be raving about them.
And bite your tongue Turtle. There is no other Q than The Hallowed Q.
But JRAD does come closest to the Q's high octane (frantic) approach.

If anyone is booking rooms for this, I booked a room at the Creekside Inn, about 2.5 miles away -- they offer a free Tesla shuttle w/in a 5 mile range -- so Silicon Valley!
Am holding this until I figure out what my Bay Area crew is doing after the show.... most of them live in Sonoma County, so not sure if they will want to drive home afterward.
Last night was opening night at the newly renovated Frost. I didn't go but was able to hear the music anyway. Powerful new sound system, and the weather conditions were ripe for carrying the sound. At first, I didn't realize the music was coming from the Frost at first and thought it was just a neighborhood party.
Late afternoon into sunset into nighttime shows are going to work real well there, looking forward to going.
>>>Powerful new sound system<<<
The venue doesn't have a sound system of it's own, but the point is the same; now that they have professional rigging they can bring in big-league lighting & sound systems, which means they can now bring in big-league shows.
The question now is, how long before the neighbors begin a whining campaign and try to shut down the venue/demand draconian sound restrictions? I'm betting a dime they're already on it.
Lol, I’m on it but the grumpy neighbors on nextdoor.com have already mobilized. The general consensus though was that people were psyched to have the Frost up and running again.
>Excited that the Frost is hosting concerts again! The music last night ended early enough. I’m guessing they have a 10 pm curfew. Sometimes because of weather conditions, the sound can bounce further away, as is also the case with the music coming from Shoreline Amphitheater and every outdoor concert venue in every City. I have tickets to a couple of upcoming shows at the Frost and look forward to hearing the music close up. Next summer sounds to expect will be fireworks coming from Stanford, local Graduations, swim meets, kids playing outdoors and even occasional thunder! Let’s not forget the constant airplane noise. None of which is worth stressing about though.
There were 2 threads on nextdoor.com about the noise. First one was posted in the ‘Crime’ section and encouraged people to report the noise to the police. Moderator pulled it. It was pretty funny, and like I said most neighbors didn’t seem to care and in fact were telling off the idiot who called the police while also explaining how the concert wasn’t violating any noise ordinances
I prefer afternoon concerts so if the noise police get demanding it wouldn’t be so terrible. I don’t think that anything will have to change tho
the sound traveled to areas in East Palo Alto, Atherton, Menlo Park and Palo Alto. Allied Arts neighborhood from reports may have been impacted the hardest - or they’re just the biggest complainers. ‘It’s unbearable!!!’ They just need to turn down their hearing aids
When the inversion layer is happening EVERYone hears it.
The problem is there are lots of very rich & influential (redundant?) people living around Stanford.
Years ago when they organized against Shoreline the group was lead by George Schultz & Condoleezza Rice, so they were able to take their whine pretty far. Even then the best they could do was make a bunch of lawyers more rich and get a deal where for Shoreline to be fined there had to be a large number of complaints logged during a show, and then there had to be a large number of those marked shows before Shoreline would actually get dinged.
The local yokels would have complaint parties on show nights where one home would host the party and many neighbors would come and call in. Of course because they were all calling from the same phone it was obvious what they were doing. Gotta' love the inclusive Bay Area, where we're so open-minded and accepting (unless it annoys or offends us).
Those parties came to an end when one night a show had been canceled late and the fools started calling anyway to complain about the noise.
I don't think Frost is scheduling that many rock/loud shows this summer, likely for this reason, but they'll certainly want to ramp that up going forward, so this will be an on-going issue for sure.
checked our local nextdoor.com, not one complaint about the Frost. Learned the the Prolific Oven has closed. And someone or something is poisoning squirrels.
A really well played show, I thought the addition of the various horns was a nice touch, he fit in well and didn't get in the way by playing too much. I hit the sack as soon as the first notes of Throwing Stones were played, good to see that I didn't miss anything monumental.
When did they add the pavilion roof to the place? They did a nice job but it takes a little away from the bucolic atmosphere of the venue.
That stage structure is new, and was mandatory if the venue is going to be used for professional touring events, which the place never was before.
Bands tour with light and sound systems and they don't like playing venues that can't accommodate them.
For the fans it allows shows to happen after dark, which takes away the surface-of-the-sun broil & glare aspect of the place, which is also a major plus IMO.
initial cost plus cost of maintenance. A stone curb will run $80 a linear foot for installation, a wall would be much more. Then thrown in the footers for something more significant and the pain in the ass of getting mowers to each level and the venues don't really care. People are rarely buying tickets for the venue (with a few exception, red rocks) so why invest if you just want to milk cash out of concert goers.
Both shows were so much fun.... I really enjoyed the guest artists, though I"m not familiar w/ their work. Other highlights:
1) Finding Zooey in lot G at Greek -- Thank you for your hospitality and know that you have a place to stay in Portland should you ever venture this far north for music.
2) Getting to say STFU to 4 women in front of us @ Greek who couldn't stop yakking -- first timers and they didn't care about the music.
3) On the walk out, watching the strength of the nitrous mafia running 8-10 tanks at same time with fans swarming them like bees -- and cops looking the other way. Haven't seen it that thick in years.
4) Going to see the Higgs at an after-party on Sunset Blvd. That lead guitarist seemed to adore having his hair blown around by the ceiling fans.
5) Getting picked up at SJC by my guy's old college buddy in a 66 Mustang .. no muffler, no seatbelts.
6) Appreciating the friendly energy of a good old Bay area audience.
7) Excited to buy a poster since I went to both shows...but disappointed to see that there was a major mispelling of the word Stanford sheesh! Wish I would've caught this at the merch table.

I get that it would be cool
I get that it would be cool if it was still just a grass hill with a little stage at the bottom that is rarely if ever used, but I think it will be even cooler to get to actually go back there and see lots of shows instead of remembering 30 years ago when we used to see one or two. Personally I am happy about that, and I don't think what they've done looks that bad.
>>>whats parking like for this venue<<<
I would assume there will be plenty of parking in the fields around the venue that they use for the football games..... for a slight fee.

Sorry no pictures but I was near the outside of it a couple months ago
Almost all of the fields are still there more than enough parking (there's a new band building and the Bing center for the arts or something but other than that Way easier than the Greek not that I'm comparing

most parking on campus is
more on parking
most parking on campus is FREE on weekends.

Tell 'em to hush and enjoy the music Nanz.

When the inversion layer is
When the inversion layer is happening EVERYone hears it.

A really well played show, I
A really well played show, I thought the addition of the various horns was a nice touch, he fit in well and didn't get in the way by playing too much. I hit the sack as soon as the first notes of Throwing Stones were played, good to see that I didn't miss anything monumental.
When did they add the pavilion roof to the place? They did a nice job but it takes a little away from the bucolic atmosphere of the venue.

That stage structure is new,
That stage structure is new, and was mandatory if the venue is going to be used for professional touring events, which the place never was before.
Bands tour with light and sound systems and they don't like playing venues that can't accommodate them.
For the fans it allows shows to happen after dark, which takes away the surface-of-the-sun broil & glare aspect of the place, which is also a major plus IMO.

>>>>why don't more places
>>>>why don't more places terrace their venues?
initial cost plus cost of maintenance.

Both shows were so much fun..

I still think the 'mandatory'
I still think the 'mandatory' band shell looks Gawdy. Legendary spot though and im glad to have made the trip out to see Phil in 2002.
