Just got this message from a friend:
Right about this time, forty years ago, we were in line, on the sidewalk outside Winterland in San Francisco. We were waiting in the light rain for the doors to open. Bill Graham (Uncle Bobo) let the line in early, probably because of the weather.
The first show wasn't a band but the movie, ANIMAL HOUSE, which had opened in theaters about 5 months earlier. It was watchable again (and again!). Then THE BLUES BROTHERS, then NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE.
The DEAD showed up before midnight and we rang in the New Year with SUGAR MAGNOLIA, with the countdown by Dan Aykroyd Some five hours later the music stopped and Uncle Bobo fed us breakfast. It was a cellophane wrapped sweet roll and a milk. Doesn't sound good now but it was heavenly that morning.
And that was the last concert at Winterland...Have a great New Year!
Probably my favorite NYE. Bittersweet it was. BTW, I also got an orange with my "breakfast" and I remember eggs, too.

Hey, psyche!
Hey, psyche!
We posted our 40 years ago threads at exactly the same time.
Wow man.
A couple of corrections to your friend's recollections...
NRPS played before the Blues Brothers. In fact when they raised the huge video screen that they showed the movie on the New Riders were already on stage and playing as the screen went up.
Also, the breakfast was WAY more than just a sweet roll & milk. There was eggs and good ham and other stuff too.
What a night, such a night.

We got the 3 disc Album Box
We got the 3 disc Album Box set, at places like Bleeker Bob's in the Village the next summer.
I was so impressed. A friend of mine dragged this album with him where ever he went.
He was bitten by the magic of Jerry.
"Its the Friend of the Devil, in that show, dripping with Roses and Champaign"
Are they not the coolest people in the whole wide world, or what?
Its a very very good record & now an official DVD too. Great stuff.
That being said; there was nothing in the world like being there, for sure.
I am working on the prior year, 1977, the last 48 hours and its sick. I shaved it down to 1:57:17, from 3 hours for my soundtrack.
I will attempt to publish this tonight.'
Buts its an annual tradition, to yank my NYE videos. We'll see....w/a

Mylar & Lance.....Awesome
Mylar & Lance..... I was 17 and a junior/senior in high school. Had not yey seen my first Dead show but was well on my way. In 1979/80 I was a freshmen at Queens college with about 6 or 7 shows under my belt. The school had an orientation type weekend where about 50 of us traveled Upstate. My friend traveled with me and he brought his Boom Box and 10 Dead bootlegs. We came up for the weekend well prepared with many snacks and goodies. We attended early morning orientation and during the break we decided to hike the mountains with boom box in hand. The box must have weighed 13 pounds. We hiked for what seemed to be miles and miles up hill most of the way but time wise it all passed in the blink of an eye. At the very top of the mountain we encountered train tracks. We decided to kick back and partake. We were partying hard. I remember sweating bullets and thinking how incredible the day was turning out. Out of the blue I think i hear a train. I put my ear to the tracks and I tell my buddy something is afoot. But being at the "peak" of the mountain we cautiously turn up the music. A minute later a train comes ripping around the bend with the conductor blasting his train whistle. On the boom box was Winterland 78 blasting Terrapin station. it was really unreal. Do not think we could get much higher. The train seemed to be endless as it was a cargo train. I must have counted about 100 cars before it finally passed. Like i said it was unreal. We eventually made it down the mountain only to realize what we thought was 2 hours of hiking turned out to be about 6 hours. Needless to say we missed the rest of orientation. The rest of the weekend is kind of a blur but those moments on the mountain are 4 ever vivid.
