Why do so many deadheads traditionally hate certain bands?

Forums:

... and can one still get winged if they don't loathe the likes of The Eagles, Steve Miller Band, The Doobie Bros or Kansas?

i like rush.

It is all there in the Trump Profecy

I'm good with Rush too. The Doobies first few albums (pre-Michael McDonald) have some nice moments and Kansas's first few albums were pretty cool when I was in High School.

Alright now, on the other hand - The Eagles = meh. And Steve Miller? For a minute or two songs at the most.

Here is my favorite version of Kansas' Carry On My Wayward Son  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7EVersJ6ts

We still in middle school?

>>>>And Steve Miller?

Sailor was a pretty good album from the ole "no play motherfucker."

I like all those bands. Any dead head that dislikes SMB doesn't know their history in the early San Francisco Music scene. But I get it.  I do admit I dont like the hits that got to much airplay like "dust in the wind". I'll also admit It took awhile for me to appreciate Geddy's voice. I always found GD fans to be open minded about many styles of music.

Yeah, Steve Miller had a decent tune or two Joker, Fly Like an Eagle, Gimme a Cheeseburger or whatever that song was.

If you want to talk worst lyrics of all time:

"Abra abra cadabra,

I want to reach out and grab 'ya!"

At least top ten right there.

Can't think of a band I hate.

Me neither. Just some bands I don't connect with.

Because Deadheads have good taste in music and those bands suck.

^there it is

Saw Steve Miller open for GD at Giant Stadium in NJ many moons past.  It was OK.

Most noteworthy thing about SM is that he opened the door for Bayarean acts to land huge $$ recording contracts.

I loved early Steve Miller with Boz Scaggs in the band. The first 2 albums were very trippy.
Then he started going in another direction and I lost interest.

I like the James Gang as well as Joe Walsh's contributions to the Eagles.

Funk 49:

The Grateful Dead was my first love.  Deadheads can be close-minded, however, many of us are open to so much other good music.

I liked Steve Miller when he was backing Chuck Berry. Steve Miller could play the blues, and he did it well. He's all good in my book, even if I don't listen to his catalog.

But: I've met very few deadheads who have good taste in music, clothes, or women. To say otherwise is a joke.

Steve Miller's first five albums were pretty damn good.

Sailor has always been under the radar IMO- and Brave New World is classic.

After Number 5- he went  shitball mainstream to make his millions, and he did.

I'm pretty much open to all bands and music types sans "hip hop", although I didn't buy hardly any of the mainstream "classic rock" records back in the day.

I missed some great shows back in the 70's because of all the time I spent at GD shows at Winterland and elsewhere, and I regret that a little.

Freaking loved early Steve Miller band when in high school we made a movie up on skyline in the fog with rolling hills and white horses that is the soundtrack big fun

Also saw Steve Miller with Boz Skaggs open for Fleetwood Mac at the Fillmore West

damn fun and fine show  but I think that Peter Green ate like 800 Hits of acid two weeks before and was no longer part of the Mac

too bad I  don't have any grandkids yet because i sure sound one every time I post these days

what are the odds of having five kids and no grandkids (it's all good)

Don't call me close minded!!

I like Jerry Garcia Band, Little Feat, The Allman Brothers, New Riders Of The Purple Sage just to name a few

Deadheads embarrass us daily.

dIQKO6k.jpg

Deadheads don't embarrass me I take on that sole responsibility and do it well

and I honestly can't say I hate any bands there are just many I have no desire to see

or wouldn't have

so I'm only halfway close-minded

((( MAF MAF )))

Check out Steve Millers early, early album...Anthology.....its fantastic, and a far cry not only from Fly Like An Eagle, but miles away from AbracafuckinDabra

That poor cat.

^^My Dark Hour was proto Fly Like an Eagle.

Love all those bands listed in OP.

Growing up, I heard them all on KNRY in Monterey.  Formative stuff for me.

Same, JohnnyD, except we had KOME (the come spot on your dial) here.

I know a deadhead who still holds a grudge against Zappa because, in his opinion, 'Frank disrespected Jerry' by making fun of certain fans (basically early wooks) in the song Teenage Wind.

It's a miserable Friday night;
I'm so lonely
And nobody'll give me a ride
To the Grateful Dead concert... Oh rats!

If I was at the concert now, I'd be ripped!
(we were free when we were born)
I could tighten my headband for an extra rush
During Jerry's guitar solo

Free is when you don't have to
Pay for nothing
Or do nothing
We want to be free
Free as the wind

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cF0AkC3Y9g

Zappa fans hated everyone, especially Deadheads, well the ones I knew anyway...where I come from Deadheads were the Greasers and everybody else was the Soc's. We hated those bands because they hated us and the Grateful Dead...

As the banner once said:

Dead's the best

Fuck the rest

:)

<<<<Same, JohnnyD, except we had KOME (the come spot on your dial) here.

Don't touch that dial it's got Kome on it. circa 1990's for me.

>Zappa fans hated everyone<

As a Zappa fan, I'd have to disagree.  We are just know that all other musicians are inferior to FZ.

Sorry...bit tired this morning. Been up since 4 am

Should have written...

We know that all other musicians are inferior to FZ.

Another good  question is - why are Gen X hipsters so jealous of old school deadheads that they have to continually poke at them like fucking overly-pesky insects?

Mr.  Rain 6,

I'm not  sure of the  answer,  but have sometimes pondered your similar question.

Perhaps it is a result of oversaturation by vaccines that have been proclaimed "Mandatory"  by a corrupt gov't controlled by Pharmaceutical behemoths who create laws out of thin air.  The injections impede normal cellular development within the populace.

The resulting Humopods are brain-damaged from birth, and then raised on a Soybean - heavy diet,  barely suitable for Cattle.

Then,  media bombardment from Womb to Grave,  with GMO Soy "Food" supplements along every step.

It all leads up to an Insectoid Colony of poorly-functioning Humanoids,  with no historical background and no goals toward building a Future.

However,  what we comprehend as the 1965 -> 1995 "DeadHead" culture may have been the last gov't Experiment  in long-term Social Studies letting a segment of the populace Run Free,  to see what might result.

>why are Gen X hipsters so jealous of old school deadheads<

I think it is more a combination of pity and disgust.

I think it is more a combination of pity and disgust. >>>

Bingo.

Regarding Zappa, I've never liked it. Of course he's a talented musician, its hard to get that far and not be, but the whole Zappa schtick is lost on me. I don't like humor in music-it never makes me laugh, it makes me cringe in embarrassment that people think its funny. For the same reason, I can't stomach much Phish either. They were at their best when being a quirky rock band, not when trying to be funny.

^the "humorous" stuff makes up a very small percentage of the Zappa catalog

Because they suck, why else.

Peace.

FZ, Shut up and play yer guitar.

His abrupt musical changes within songs doesn't work for me.

^i can see that, Slack. But to paraphrase FZ...

Some of the music is dfficult to listen to, but you'll be better off in the long run

>>>>>^the "humorous" stuff makes up a very small percentage of the Zappa catalog

If 25% is a small percentage.

How so?

Not a Zappa fan.

>>I think it is more a combination of pity and disgust.

I think it's a combination of bullshit and pixie dust.

I got into the GD in the early 80's and never had any hatred towards the bands mentioned above.

The bands I hated were of the genre of Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Judas Priest, Scorpions, Ratt, Motly Crue, Poison, etc, etc.

But I liked GnR, Metallica and Iron Maiden, so go figure...

So, back to the topic: what’s so wrong about liking, or even loving, classic rock? Over the years, people here have put others down for listening to it. Is it a sign of coolness to like other music? Does it make someone a better person for liking EDM, modern jazz or new prog rock?

Further, does it make someone close-minded if they love and listen to Bob Marley, CSNY, GD and Zep?

There are only two types of music in this world. Music you like and music you don't like. Period.

All the rest is just bullshit opinions and trying too hard.

Do you guys like Disney pop, R&B slow jamz or bro country?

Well, there's also music I sorta like and sorta don't like.

I am a big advocate of Disney pop, of course.

I like some songs of artists/bands I don't like.

>>Well, there's also music I sorta like and sorta don't like.

How much time do you spend listening to this kind of music?

I love the Go-Gos and hate Clapton. I don’t give a shit if Jerry once called him the greatest guitar player ever.

From time immemorial, 90% of every genre is shit. That leaves 10% of bro country that’s probably decent.

I bet that, even in the 900s, people were saying, “Dude, this Gregorian chanting sucks. These guys have nothing on those monks from Poland.”

>>How much time do you spend listening to this kind of music?

However long my wife listens to it.

Because there is a strong presence of narcissistic personality disorder and inferiority complex in our tribe.

Of course our music is the best and yours is beneath me.

I can handle just about any kind of music.  At 15-20 minutes a side, it ain't gonna kill you.

If 25% is a small percentage<<<

I'd say it's closer to 10%, but could be that we differ on what we consider humorous.

>>How so?<<

Don't know. I'm not sure that I have run far enough yet.

>Not a Zappa fan<

Most people aren't

I think one of the gifts of being a true fan of The Grateful Dead, JGB, etc, is that over years, it opened my eyes (ears?) to styles of music i most likely wouldnt have listened to, let alone gotten into, if all the members of the band hadnt been influenced by so many differant styles.

Bluegrass, gospel, country, folk, jazz, reggae ....on and on...ive always liked rock, jazz, and a little folk and soft rock, but, i really think the band had a huge effect on my tastes. They made me more "accepting" of other styles, and their importance, etc, and also, gave me a huge appreciation for live music of any style...bar none.

With all that being said, they also set the bar so high, that i can also be capable of being the GD music snob that waves a backhand at alot of bands in general because they just dont cut it. (So many shitless bands in 80-90 s that made it big. ...blame it on MTV?....lol...total snob)

So, its kind of a enigma wrapped in a puzzle, in that ill listen to all styles of music, and go see ANYBODY live, but, my standards are very high....if that makes sense....either way, i thank the Dead for that. Theres no chance in hell that id really appreciate how talented and influential people like Roy Clark, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard etc etc etc etc etc etc etc, if i hadnt become a deadhead....

Canyon's a straight up gansta, yo.

People tell me all the time that I should like Bluegrass. There’s always the, “ Jerry loved Bluegrass, and if you love Jerry...”

Yeah, whatever.

I don't go hating much.  I figure, if the band musicians practice their craft most of their lives to be good at something, I have respect for that.  'Good' being relative and all.

A buddy of mine hates SCI, calls them Sour Cream Accident.

I think it’s fine to be critical of other music, but I do crack up when I hear Dead Heads criticize other music because all of their fans are supposedly high on some drug that they don’t approve of.

I approve of Juggalos and any drug they choose to do.

I hate all 4 of those bands you mentioned, and (I'm 48 yrs old) I hated them before I was a deadhead at 15 (got into skateboarding and punk when I was 13). Maybe I liked the Eagles when I was like in elementary school. Those bands are very very popular, very overexposed, too commercial sounding and just fucking lame. I hated the Doobies definitely in middle school (I was into AC/DC and Iron Maiden etc) and maybe even in 5th grade

Like I said, I'm on the younger end of this board I think so it's ok to disagree with me. Yes the early Steve Miller Band is not bad, but . My friend from high school's dad was the drummer in Steve Miller Band later (John King) but that absolutely did not make me like them. I just don't like AOR hits from the 70s or just that sound in general

Re: Deadheads I am solid in my belief that the younger the deadhead the worse the taste in music. Some of that jamband stuff out there now is so bad, songless wankery of the most terrible sort. Sure they have songs, but they are very very bad ones.

I was into AC/DC when I was in High School and Bon Scott was still alive, but I lost interest after Back in Black.

>I approve of Juggalos and any drug they choose to do.

Drug bridge WOOT WOOT

Sad singer songwriters are difficult to listen to most of the time.

>>>Some of that jamband stuff out there now is so bad, songless wankery of the most terrible sort

Exhibit A:  .moe

How about old prog bands?  Seems like a lot of the heads I now who gravitate more towards Americana GD don't dig the prog, yet for me anyway, I loved when the GD would go a little progressive (Slipknot!).

I've been listening to Camel lately.. great band live (but I only got to see them once)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TakazuzJVPc

And I really miss seeing YES shows with Howe, Wakeman, Anderson and Squire...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPfgqPcF-BE

King Crimson still put on a great prog show...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3028oDEKZo4

as does Steve Hackett.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZBaphpcAjE

and of course the Dweez

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xcoHA33mH8

I've never listened to prog.

Ive heard some radio stuff. I've never listened to an album yet. Something else always gets played.

I've tried listening to Neil Young but always change it when it gets to soft or sleepy.

^that's my favorite neil young .

Guessing you're not a John Prine fan.

No emerson , lake, and palmer , Slack?

Try it...you just may like it...live album set "welcome back my friends....to the show that never ends"

(Spoiler alert,  it actually DOES end at some point)

Never heard John Prine. My wife wanted to see Nick Lowe at Hardly Strictly. I didn't.

No ELP. Sorry .

I'm not a Ween fan but I liked their set. I could maybe get into a whole Ween show more than a Phish show.

I only want to see Phish in Philadelphia.

^John prine has many sad, sleepy songs

 > I only want to see Phish in Philadelphia<

Hope you make it

Shoot, I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd a few months before the crash, also some others back then that I wouldn't of imagined today that i would of gone to seen...but it was part of my music history and pertinent to my growing as a person :). I was blessed to have lived in a wonderful time musically , the 70's were a great time of SO many various types of music and exploring where I belonged was fun !!  Eventually I did choose to see more bluegrass and Dead live, but remained  open and available to whatever my mood would warrant at any given time.

I feel that has helped me to be open to other types of music genres, even now exploring music that surprises and moves me to want to hear more. I simply love live music and totally live to go to another show, thank goodness I am retired and can go see as much as I can now . Heading to a cool little festi here in South Jersey called Electric Halloween , next weekend....some real good music to bear witness to...

http://www.electrichalloweenfestival.com/music.html

I don't hate any band, but can def say that not all music "moves" me, I pretty much know instantly ...like Phish, just because i'm into the GD is a pre req for liking Phish....i don't think so....ughhh !!

I love Phish

>>>The bands I hated were of the genre of Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Judas Priest, Scorpions, Ratt, Motly Crue, Poison, etc, etc.

I'm with you on all of these except the Scorpions... I got into them after seeing UFO w/Michael Schenker at a Day On The Green in the late 70's.

The David Bowie stuff I've heard is pretty boring so I don't dig through his catalog much.

Lou Reed is another guy I'll hear something good from and then try listening to more of his stuff but it doesn't do anything.

who DO you like slacker other than the buttholes?

Slacker, do you like any British Invasion rock and roll icons?

Stones

Zep

Who

Kinks

Cream

Beatles

Deep Purple

I'm going to Kikagaku Moyo tonight.

I love Leftover more than any traditional bluegrass band.

I wish Jesus Sons would play up here again but they probably broke up.

Missed the last Courtney Barnett show. Can't afford the festival she's playing this weekend.

I like Nick Lowe

I never listened to their whole catalogs but I like the Stones and later era Led.

>>>later era Led.

that's probably the first time I've ever heard anyone say that...

There's some good early stuff but the traditional blues is to prevalent.

I’m going to see Phish next week.

Slack, check out Lou Reed’s albums Street Hassle and New Sensations.

Another band that does little for me is Floyd. I find the old stuff, with Sid Barrett, to be fucking weird, and the stuff from after his time to be depressing. I’m not a huge fan of that British prog rock genre in general. I don’t mind a Yes or Crimson song here or there, but not a full album side.

Street Hassle ain't working.

Trying New Sensations. Much better start. I could listen to some of this while driving.

Courtney Barnett would do a good cover of Modern Lovers Old World.

Street Hassle is a pretty gritty and dark album.

>>>>>>that's probably the first time I've ever heard anyone say that...

He's a complicated man but no one understands him but his woman

Desert Skies by Marshall Tucker Band is a family anthem.

there are probably 5000 songs that i never want to hear again.

^totally, but that doesn't necessarily mean I didn't like (love) them at one time. I blame FM and Sirius radio.

Furious E and I have a show on Feb 2 (Turtles birthday) with our Indie Hipster Funk band The Punksutawney Philharmonic.

>>>>>>>The bands I hated were of the genre of Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Judas Priest, Scorpions, Ratt, Motly Crue, Poison, etc, etc.

Plus, they generally had the hottest babes hanging all over them.  I never could figure that one out > they all looked so doofy to me with all that make-up and spandex and crap...

Loved Aerosmith and AC/DC, though (being the preacher's kid, I had to go to my  best friend's house to listen to that kind of music in the '70s).  (((Toys in the Attic)))

listened to Toys on my drive to CO.

Hoover, post details when they become available.

i mean like 78-88 was pretty fucking rough.

i have younger people telling me they enjoy george micahel.

also "classic rock" pretty much should be abolished.

hoover, i'm tired of traveling for drug bands.

I like INXS

>>>>>hoover, i'm tired of traveling for drug bands.

Its at a brewery.

I took the wife to see George Michael... there were hot wiminz everywhere, the audience was up and dancing the whole show, the full LCD stage was insane, and even if the songs are total pop, the dude can sing.

ev_georgemich06_01_l.jpg

The Kinks?

The Animals?

War?

Do you like anybody, Slack?

(Besides a song here or there)

well if there were tons of drugs and women it could help the experience...

Why do I have to like every song on every album that has a song I like?

I've heard some War. Some Animals. My dad liked their hits. Spilled wine.

We gotta get outta this place and shit. War is hell. I get flashbacks when I see choppers flying low off the beach.

Plus, they generally had the hottest babes hanging all over them.  I never could figure that one out > they all looked so doofy to me with all that make-up and spandex and crap...<<<<<

um, Cocaine?

 the dude can sing<<<<

not any more

There are a whole hell of a lot of genres that I’d abolish before classic rock. Plus, I like a lot of those tunes. You can’t get rid of Tull, the Stones, The Who, CSNY, The Kinks, etc. And what about  Blue Oyster Cult and Bad Company?

Damn, Turts, you’re a cold, cold man!

love BOC and the Tull

Bad Company has a few songs I dig

As Java said, there really was something to album sides. 18 minute album sides are perfect.

BOC at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk was an excellent night.

I don't know all the songs of many of the bands I see.

I like the Los Lobos song Emily. I haven't heard the album it's on.

I only listen to one side of vinyls on the weekends because moods change quickly.

I want to hear everything but time and moods change when the right and wrong songs are playing.

>>>>>>>The bands I hated were of the genre of Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Judas Priest, Scorpions, Ratt, Motly Crue, Poison, etc, etc.

Even with this cast of characters, there is a wide range of quality.  Priest rocked, Scorpions were good, Whitesnake was ok but clearly a Zeppelin clone, Ratt and Poison were terrible, and Mötley Crüe sucked donkey spüe.  Thought Bon Jovi sucked too but have to give them credit for their staying power.

"Emily" is on Los Lobos' album The Neighborhood.  A real good album, it's their most blues-based work.

I dig the Scorpions power ballad, Still Loving You.

Slack, what are your favorite musicals? Do you enjoy the Sound of Music? How about West Side Story, or Grease?

Motley Crue has better songs than Bon Jovi.

I don't like musicals. Mary Poppins is ok. Most Disney animated muscials are ok.

Artists did some cheesy synth stuff in the 80's and 90's.

I like Mandolin Rain and The Way It Is now because I listened to some live Hornsby. I dug his live full band sound.

^^ cheesy synth stuff....whole lot of that during those years fo sure...

Kajafreakinflockaflockaguju....

But those songs are good. the albums might not be full of good stuff. It's like yacht rock. Goes good with some drugs and booze.

I listen to new wave/new romantics hits more than Molly Hatchet or J Geils.

I like some songs by the Eurithmics, Flock of Seagulls and Human League, but that’s about it for New Wave. I guess some of the proto-EMO stuff from the Cure and The Smiths is okay.

Theres a time and place for most, id agree.......most, but , not all

and its all still just ones personal tastes anyway...whatever floats your "yacht" etc

there was just a special time, Slack, when coming home from the store w a new album (vinyl) was such a special occasion....unwrapping, cleaning it off, cleaning needle, playing first song, (over half the time id say it was an unheard tune for me at time, maybe 1-2 singles having been released), start to read back cover of album after checking out front artwork etc, check inside (again) to see if any lyrics may be enclosed. If it was one of your favorite bands, you may have been listening w others and discussing each tune, move on to 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th....flip album over...here youre in one of two places, either already in love w this album and just cant wait for more, or if disappointed in any way from side one, youre waiting for side two to blow you away....it was just a different time, a different presentation, and ill always be convinced that making a great album was the bands goal, where today, most are just trying to produce a great song. Just my opinion etc....

Cheers, thanks for Geils memtion, im gonna go throw on Blow Your Face Out (made loud to play loud)....a great DOUBLE album....;)

Song for America Kansas =Nice

Mickey Hart = Respectable member of GD

Haters = Dildo sauce

>>who DO you like slacker other than the buttholes?

lol, just sounds funny.

I like the song Pepper.

i like macy gray.

I saw Macy Gray open for David Bowie at the Rosemont Theatre.  We were like 10th row and it was awesome.

^wow. that's sick!

Rush, not so much never. I watched the recent documentary on then that was fairly interesting though. They have quite the following. Whenever i think of Rush its always JR's epic Rush thread that pops in, classic lol.

Yes, apparently JR needs to wet wipe if he hears so much as the opening riff of Tom Sawyer.

I got into them in HS in the 70's (a friend turned me onto A Farewell to Kings), and then I ended up seeing them at the Cow Palace with a head full of L when I was still very young and a total newb to the power of the live concert... they had me hooked with the first laser beam, lol, (though I am not a fan of any of much of their post 70's catalog).

Much respect, Hall.

^that band put on a shredding show!  Still can't believe we got to see them the DNA Lounge... such a memorable time, though a lot of the audience didn't 'get it', so we were some of the ony ones really rockin' out and since we were near the front and center, we got a lot of [3rd] eye contact from the man himself, which was pretty thrilling for my girl.

Video of that tour in Paris:

Frank Zappa aside from Black Napkins and while being a talented player made some of the worst music I’ve ever heard in my life. Honestly though, he sucks. Just sayin

One of my favorite San Francisco bands of the 60's was the Sons of Champlin. Their lead guitarist Terry Haggerty had a unique style that was the envy of many others in the community.
Bill Champlin had a funky blues style of singing that set them apart. Great live band!

Honestly though, he sucks. Just sayin>>>>

May you accidently eat yellow snow for blabbering such nonsense.

Phish fans and deadheads.... while most would claim to be very open minded musically, taken as a whole, they are some of the most short sighted music fans out there

Certain bands suck.

>>Phish fans and deadheads....they are some of the most short sighted music fans out there

Not exactly sure how you came up with this hypothesis. People tend to like what they like. Pop fans tend to listen mostly to pop; country fans mostly to country; hip hop fans mostly to hip hop. Deadheads and Phishies listen to classic rock and “jam,” whatever that is.

Im not contending that, as a group, they are more diverse in taste, but at don’t think that they are any more myopic than fans of any genre.

Deadheads say they listen to music covered or referenced by the GD.

Phish fans say they listen to music covered or referenced by Phish.

(Listening to Gram Parsons and the Flying Burrito Brothers - Sleepless Nights)

The Eagles reunion tour had a lot to do with venues and other bands raising the price of tickets. Their music is ok. Joe Walsh is good.

Seven Bridges Road is a must listen to when you're under the stars.

>>>The Eagles, Steve Miller Band, The Doobie Bros or Kansas

I loved em all in junior high school. I got sick of the Eagles before high school. I still love the Doobies. Steve Miller wrote some great songs, but I got sick of him too. Kansas was awesome and still underplayed. My kids love Wayward Son.

Just because we don't like it (or are sick of it) doesn't mean it's not good.

But does it really matter if it's good if you don't like it ?

are the counting crows the center of this venn diagram?

deadheads really seem to not like those guys.

>>>> I like macy gray.

one of a handful of female vocalist that captured my imagination over the past 30 years

>>>>>Frank Zappa aside from Black Napkins

Opened with Black Napkins at the Tower as I made my way down the center isle for my orchestra seat.

It felt like he was playing for me as I entered

RRE bores me

bunch of whiney pukes,

If Curveball wasn’t cancelled, I might of had to enjoy the weekend with them.
