When I saw JRAD is sounded like some pert good 80's dead covers

DNB 100%       but still going to JRAD soon.

When you want GD covers, go to JRAD or Cubensis.

When you want the best music on the planet, go to DNB.

Serious question.  Have you attended a DNB or NRPS show in the last 5 - 7 years ?

How could you even compare the two? DNB has the aged soul of our heroes with a legacy rooted in the past.

JRAD is just milking it for the $$.. Seriously I didn't like Mayer singing GD tunes till I heard the flat soulless sounds of Tom Hamilton  

The band is tight but find another singer. WEEN bassist Dave Dreiwitz is the best part of the band IMO

I was just inquiring because there are a few tunes that DNB and NRPS have in their shared repertoire.  "Ghost Train Blues"  is one that comes to mind.

Each ensemble has their unique interpretation of that one.

Really,  I don't know for sure if you enjoy ~that~ style of Music or what.

There are many DNB,  JRAD & NRPS recordings on archive.org.  

You ought to listen,  and form your own decisions based upon your personal Sonic experience.

Zactly...it is just personal taste..for me, Slack, id go see DNB anytime, anywhere. I think they are a great great BAND. i like jrad, they are a good cover band , covering music i absolutly love. The differance, to me, is massive.

Molo vs. Russo?

Russo was pretty great in Furthur, but I still preferred Molo. When I saw Russo with JRAD he seemed less good than before. Phoning it in, going through the motions....just one show, I know, but I always want to hear Molo.

JRAD is a cover band

I think that statement is misleading in it's insinuation. The members of JRAD are all accomplished members of numerous other bands that play original music. This a a project side band for everyone, not their main gig. It is not as if JRAD is playing the regional club circuit looking for an audience. 

As for the original question, I like JRAD better than I like DNB and it has nothing to do with the song selection. That doesn't take away anything from DNB. I think they are a quality band as well. Just like JRAD better.

least favorite for me, but I admittedly haven't listened to a lot of them.

the recordings have a hard time keeping my attention and I'd probably rather see dso on a good night.

the current incarnation of DNB was in place by 2006 (Pete Sears joined in 2005, and Molo came on-board in 2006)

while I have a soft spot for the original DNB lineup -- I saw them perhaps 15 times from 2000 thru 2005 -- the vast majority of the DNB shows I have attended had the current power lineup that includes Sears & Molo (vs. original bassist Billy Laymon & a succession of drummers [Arthur Steinhorn, Charlie Crane, Jimmy Sanchez, et al.])

as alluded to previously in this thread, comparing DNB and JRAD is an unfair exercise... if you wanna hear a GD cover band on steroids, you go see JRAD... whereas if you aspire to connecting with the greatest and tightest improvisational jamband out there today, playing some of the best original songs of our time (with a few GD tunes and kickass versions of other covers thrown in for good measure), with an iconic frontman that is one of the few living musicians having a pedigree going back to Jerry's formative musical years in the early 1960s, and with a loyal and kind fan base that is small enough and tight enough to be considered family, then you choose the David Nelson Band.

to me, it's a no-brainer

If a "Musical Fest"  happened with Ween,  DNB,  and JRAD somewhere together,  I'd be inclined to go.

Not paying for Slacker's ticket,  but will buy him a Beer if that all comes to fruition.

Because it is unlikely that DNB will ever come east again, I will go with JRAD.

I'll go against the grain.   

If we are talking history and each and in their prime, sure DNB over JRAD.   However, if we are talking today? I'd take JRAD.  The last DNB show I saw was painful and I feel for David as he fights for his life.

JRad is unlistenable to me. Not one of them can perform a Jerry ballad. They can do shake down and anything fast

decently but the jams aren’t really much improv. DNB is just in a different league. Wish they would come back east.

sorry to bump an old thread. of course dnb is a better band.

but as far as pure improv and creativity goes, dnb does tap into something pretty deep, but at the end of the day all the jams sound pretty similar, and the most intense peaks pretty much all hinge on barry's playing. and dont get me wrong, its fucking incredible.

but jrad covers alot more musical ground than dnb does, puts out a much wider variety of different styles, and all the members contribute equally to the peak moments of improv.

i think jrad is much more creative and adventurous in their improvisations than dnb is. 

i also think its entirely possible that if jrad had been together for 25 years, and one of the members was an expert songsmith who frequently collaborated with hunter and is one of our last and best connections to jerry garcia in a live music setting, they would probably be a better band.

but they are not any of those things, they are a cover band, so dnb wins

I was thinking the HeadBand and JK Years.

...if DSO chose Stu Allen to replace JK in 2010 things would of been more profitable for the band.

I was at that audition for Stu and the other guy in San Francisco

and was shocked that he was not selected,  but that's just me

 But it kind of worked out for Phil And Stu 

(since we can't have a band the caliber of the Q  as Phil and friends )

It could of been better if they opened the upper balcony. The place was Packed enough.

The DSO moved to the Regency because the Great American Music Hall  wasn’t big enough anymore.

Now they don’t play in the City anymore.

-the other fun DSO show in SF was when Phil joined them for the first time.at the Philmore. I think this was close to the Rolling Stone Article on DSO.

i guess technically they are covers, but any song that has nelson on the original recording, or friend of the devil, i dont really consider a cover, id say its equal on the cover song-o-meter to phil and friends, furthur, etc playing dead songs. its dubious territory.

A number of DNB songs sound like cousins to GD songs.

Diff. World def. has some similarities to Estimated.

Fable of a chosen one sounds GD like.

JK solo work is full of GD rifts.
