Dickey Betts Had A "Mild Stroke"

Dickey Betts has postponed his upcoming concerts after the former Allman Brothers Band guitarist suffered what doctors diagnosed as a “mild stroke.”

“Yesterday, after describing to his physicians certain post-stroke repercussions, [Betts] was strongly advised to give himself more time to recuperate,” the Dickey Betts Band’s website alerted fans. “Doctors have assured Betts that after three to five weeks he will be 100 percent recovered and can resume his touring schedule.”

The Dickey Betts Band canceled the remainder of their summer tour – an August 28th date at Syracuse, New York’s Great New York State Fair, August 30th in Wallingford, Connecticut and August 31st in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire – as Betts recovers; the band has penciled in their November 1st gig in Augusta, Georgia as Betts’ return to the stage.

“Dickey really regrets that he can’t be there for his fans but he has to take care of his health first,” the band’s manager David Spero added.

In a November 2017 interview with Rolling Stone, the largely retired Betts revealed that he had spoken to Gregg Allman prior to the singer’s death, the first conversation between the Allman Brothers band mates in 17 years.

Following a three-year touring hiatus, Betts returned to the road this summer with his band.

“I’ve had a great life and I don’t have any complaints,” Betts said in November. “I don’t know what I would’ve done to make it different. There are lawsuits I probably could have dealt with better. But so what? You do the best with your amount of time.”

It's amazing that they can predict 100% recovery. That's wonderful news.

I would have had tickets for that Syracuse show.

Too soon?

The Syracuse show was free

Jesus. Dickey is playing state fairs now?

Wishing him well, but just hang it up dude.

well, Tedeschi Trucks just played the same stage at the NYS Fair

Fair enough. Maybe the talent buyer for the NYS Fair is an ABB fan?

I was gonna go to that Hampton show. Bummer.

Hope he makes a full recovery.

If his nephew Sammy Betts plays near you; go.

Saw him in mid July in Long Island- should have known when his roadies had to strap on his guitar for him... his set was complete garbage. Yes, he is a legendary guitar player.... but you gotta know when it’s time to hang it up. If anybody out there thinks he’s still good, you’re either delusional or you’re listening to probably his son playing the leads, with him throwing in an occasional crappy riff.

Was he wasted, sober...or just done?

A few years ago I saw him at the old Westbury Music Fair...he was trashed and getting into it with the crowd. I would like to think if he were sober, he might be able to perform, but...

mild stroke seems like an oxymoron. Unless he needs the loot, maybe , just maybe, time to rest his brain and liver

He appeared to be drunk....actually he was about an hour late set start. They kept saying tach issues, but the sound guys were like shaking their heads seeming to say, Dickey is full of it. I can’t prove otherwise, though.

I watched a youtube video of Dicky performing earlier this year a couple months back. I wanted to dispute what troubador said then I remembered the video and there is no argument. Not sure if it was a stroke, alcohol, or age, but it was pretty bad. I wanted it to be good, and to see Dicky back in prime form; it was anything but unfortunately.

Definitely, Phishie. We were hoping to see him in the same way. It’s just pretty sad.

I was walking towards my car as slow as possible and there was a 20 minute gap between the first song & second.

I saw the EMS folks were on stand -by..

Never heard what was up?

I saw him maybe four years ago sitting in at the great room At TXR The night he  played had played at the Marin county fair

He was a good 90% there and therefore fantastic

I said hello to him outside and he was functioning just fine

alcohol and age and poor judgment can be devastating at least that's what I hear of course not from personal experience

I also saw Greg Allman but the last time for me playing in the bar

another amazing musician and legacy who had his issues and we have now lost

Time flies JJ. That Betts sit-in with Furthur at TxR was a little over six years ago, and you're right, he ripped it up real good that night.

I also ran into him that night, in the back by the dark & deserted park after he played that night. He was alone walking a little dog along the burm and I didn't recognize him until we were passing each other.

He was extremely gracious and before I could say anything to him he reached out to shake my hand and asked me how I was doing. I said I'm fine, how are you, and he said... "Well, I'm a little drunk but I'm doin' just fine."

I thought it was pretty cool and a little surreal to see an aging little dude in a cowboy hat & boots all by himself walking a little dog, just enjoying his evening, and then realizing he's one of the great rock stars of all time.

I had been pretty disappointed with a Betts show a few years earlier so I figured that night at TxR would likely be the last time I'd see him play and I was happy that he played well, with that one-of-a-kind sound he could (can?) get out of a Les Paul.

As for playing state fairs, at this late date if people want to pay to see him I don't see anything wrong with him getting out there and playing. It beats sitting at home withering away.

Either way, I sure hope he gets better.

LLDB!!!

Amen

Nice little vignette heathen and I agree I must've seen him a few minutes before you and I also noticed the boots the hat and a little dog

definitely a gracious human being that evening and a nice man

Who had just fucking ripped it up

and I also thought it was surreal seeing a legend  like that

an amazing sound

and simply just a man

get better and thanks for contributing to the endless force and joy  of fucking rock 'n' roll

I believe that he had not been playing at all for a few years. There was a bit of fan-fare this spring when he announced he was going back out on the road. I am very sorry that this was the result.

nice TXR/Betts stories
