ugh, why do people make such a big deal about this place. sub-par food for sure... especially when there are so many Oregon restaurants specializing in using local ingredients.
In N Out hires at over minimum wage in CA $13-$16 to start and offers their employees great benefits. I'm not a fast food person, but I do like to grab a burger there the couple times a year I crave tacky food. :-P
But we don't have an In N Out near us, so I plan my driving trips along routes that have them... in September I'll hit one on hwy 5 on my way to Colorado, and then in Lake Havasu City on the way back.
{{{{double double with cheese, fries, coke, chocolate shake}}}}
they opened a Habit and also a 5 guys here... I tried 'em and the Habit was un-remarkable (like Dank in 3D), while the 5 guys was inconsistent (2nd time I went the meat was super mushy, like it had water or some thinner added).
are in n out that good? my sister worked for 5 guys a while & she got me a single patty cheeseburger, fries, & drink with her discount. It showed the actual price on the receipt. almost $12, it wasn't that good & i never went back
In-n-out is known for using real ingredients (the beef is real, taters become fries for your order, not preprocessed, so that's different from the other fast food joints). And the Double Double is at a similar price, if not cheaper, than the other fast foods joints out there. They're good to their workers too (as pointed out earlier). So, as far as fast food goes, they're the best almost guilt free bang for your buck out there!
(I prefer tavern food myself, but I usually stop at the Grants Pass In/out when i'm down there; from last week)
(in full disclosure, I grew up with the one on Foothill BLVD, also known as Route 66, in Pasadena)
Greg and I tried In-n-Out once because my mom wanted a burger with grilled onions. She liked them. We never went back. I love burgers, but not "fast food" burgers. I've had one Burger King, a couple of old style Dairy Queen in the '70s, and I've never had McDonalds.
There's a place called Bartels Giant Burgers in Corning (the only building on the west side of I-5 at the downtown exit) and it used to be really, really good. Things have changed and it's not as amazing as it once was, but it's got to be better than the big chains. They also have a Bartels in Redding and in Anderson, but I've never tried those. If you go, order a "Giant Burger" (it's not really giant but it's bigger than the regular), with cheese, and pickles. They come with mustard, lettuce, tomato and a little mayo. They have a chart taped to the counter of what rare, med. rare, med, etc., are, and it's totally accurate. Juicy, flavorful, good. Yes, they have fries and shakes and sodas, but we never got those. You can eat inside or outside under an awning at picnic tables, but they used to be way too juicy to eat in the car.
I avoid factory farmed animal products so I don't really care one way or another about that new In n Out down in Keizer. Went to one late at night outside Phoenix Arizona once. Lots of cops hanging out.
For local fast food chains, we already have Burgerville, which holds itself out as using sustainable, locally sourced ingredients. I sometimes get their bean burger. Then there is Little Big Burger, which has a Spartan menu like In n Out, but they also have a veggie version of their burger. Their truffle fries alone are worth a stop.
Had one of those newfangled "Impossible Burgers" last night at the Stormbreaker Brewery in St. Johns. Supposedly, they used science to come up with the most realistic veggie burger ever. It was good. It was also $13.
Their chain prints money. At most locations there's a line out the door during peak hours & is surprisingly busy at odd hours. I'm always amazed when I'm jockeying with others to get in front of the crowd at the 10:30am opening ... can't help but wonder what is wrong with these people? :-)
"Like the griddles used in fast food joints to sear hamburger patties, the plancha is heated to a scorching temperature of around 350°C. Unlike a griddle, the highest heat is concentrated at the centre of the metal plate, allowing for different ingredients to be cooked simultaneously at different temperatures and shifted around easily without adjusting the intensity of the heat source. Most planchas are also coated with a layer of non-reactive chrome to minimise flavour changes and make cleanup easier.
These days we can choose between an all-in-one plancha-style cooker powered by gas and controlled by knobs, or the most basic and rustic rectangular metal sheet that must be placed on an existing heat source such as a stove or barbecue grill. Placed over the wood fire grill, it allows for high-heat searing with a subtle hint of smoky flavour.
Traditional planchas were thin enough to warp with temperature changes, popping up in the middle to create a hump that drained away excess grease without drying the food out like a barbecue would. Many modern day planchas are manufactured with a slight slope to mimic this effect."

I didn't know what a plancha is either, but now have something "constructive" to say after getting cut off from breakfast at restaurants: "You realize that if you installed a plancha, you could serve breakfast all day?!?"

I used to work quite close to an IN-N-OUT, but never wanted to eat there.
On the road, it's a different story.
Drive-thru always takes less time than ordering inside.
Kid doesn't eat meat, so it's easy for him to get a "grilled cheese" (cheeseburger without the beef).

me Not vegan, but can't get the appeal of 'ground beef' from mixed floor - scrapings in the cow - cutting factory.
I enjoy a taste of 'Ground Venison' now and then. We know which animal it came from, and time-frame between carcass and Freezer- wrap.
Actually I prefer 'Deer Roast', 'Deer Chop' or 'Deer Steak' but there are always a bunch of leftover cuts which get ground up.
Lean stuff, so one adds a bit of Good Bacon or even Tofu as a Fat substitute.
