RIP Anthony Bordain

Forums:

Suicide.

Remember, talk to someone.

And Guy Fieri still walks the earth. What the fuck.

Really liked his show a lot, he seemed to have it all. Looks can be deceiving.

Echoing OP....talk w someone...:(

I would have liked to have a drink with dude. It really goes to show that all that glitters is not gold and money/fame do not ensure happiness.   Im sorry to hear he felt he had no other options. Help is everywhere  Keep looking to find the person or spot.

RIP

Holy shit.  If there was one guy who seemed to love life, it was him.  Damn.

How terrible and unexpected. RIP.

Father's Day makes 1 year since my daughter's uncle took his life.. RIP, Greg~  Love you and miss you.

((Schnee))

11 year old daughter, damn.

Damn. That's incredibly sad.

I haven't posted on the board in a while, but today I am feeling just incredibly bummed out about the deaths of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain. I have no personal connection with either. I just happened to be a great admirer of both. Two people who were very intelligent, a creativity and passion each had, hard work ethic, and just stuff I was into basically.

Then I also have feelings of angst against our society and the social constructs which are all just bullshit. What it means to be a man or woman- your gender acts this way, not that way.

As an adult, seriously, people say talk to somebody.... Really? Who the heck is really going to sit and listen to your problems and go deep, without cutting you off and giving you the old, just be happy, change your scenery, exercise, breathe... while people generally mean well, often those tactics don't really help. Opening up to a loved one and revealing the darkest space a person is in, is incredibly hard to do and we live in a society that casts shame and guilt in expressing those feelings.

In addition, unless you're danger unto yourself or others and are promptly admitted to a hospital, getting an appointment to a psychiatrist and/or therapist is not immediate. It can take take several weeks to months to land an appointment.

The Suicide Prevention Hotline puts you hold....

There are so many issues and no easy answers.

I'm just feeling down about the two suicides this week, and I apologize if any of my above statements are insulting to anyone on the board.

Hope you all have a good day.

I think that you are making some very REAL points about the reality of someone seeking help.

Peace to everyone

There are more people willing to REALLY listen and get the right people involed than a lot of folks think.

RIP,Tony

>>((Schnee))

Haven't seen her ever on here.. is she around?

>>Who the heck is really going to sit and listen to your problems and go deep, without cutting you off and giving you the old, just be happy,

I understand your frustration/sentiment but just wanted to briefly share my experience finding someone to talk to.  I was in a particularly dark place two years ago and got turned on to an LICSW (Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker) and wholeheartedly buy into his approach for treating me.  I couldn't be more relieved to know that I have a guy I can text and get an appointment within a week to just sit and talk to for an hour.  He listens very well and remembers the large majority of everything I tell him.  Rarely are there times where I feel like he missed something important I had mentioned in a previous session and I can tell he has a genuine interest in my life and wellbeing.

Point being:  I get it... finding the right person is hard... but it's possible.. might just take some trial and error but, hey, it's your life and it's kindof important :)

This what not unexpected and almost forecasted.

The last 8 months have been brutal on the guy.

Pretty sure he had not slept a full 4-5 hours straight in 4 years.

You can forecast someone's suicide? Weird. Nice comment, Bluelight.

RIP

Not forecasting, but ever since I first saw him on TV well over a decade ago I was worried about him. Just looked like he was someone who could easily think himself into a very dark space. Always seemed like a guy a step away from just saying "Fuck it."

I don't have any insight into depression and suicide that hasn't already been said, except to say that simply talking to people sounds easy and doesn't necessarily help.  But try nonetheless.  In any case, this weekend I will raise tacos and beer and cold Sichuan spicy tendon and thank this man for his work.  I learned and was inspired.

>>You can forecast someone's suicide? Weird. Nice comment, Bluelight.

You are a very strange person to even to be able to write that.

Not sure your are still on the news grid, but he has been in a lot of pain and living day by day.

Do read a newspaper or watch TV? Or all smart phone?

> Guy Fieri<<

is supposedly actually a really cool guy.

Very sad I just read something on this topic

The advice in a nutshell was to just  be there for them

just to be there

don't tell them to breathe to relax or that it's OK

Show empathy and acknowledge that they are in pain

no judgment nor advice

just be there

that gives love and support

Anthony Bordain was an addict. He made mention of that many times so it's not others passing judgement. It is a fact that addicts, clean or not, have a much higher incidence of depression, isolation, anxiety, suicidal ideation, social disconnect and many other psychological maladies than the general population. It's a chicken or the egg situation. No one can be sure if addiction causes those other situations or does the other situations lend themselves to becoming an addict. When it's all said and done in the real world, it really doesn't matter. By his own words, Bordain was a troubled individual through much of his life. One of the treatment tenants of both addiction and depression is to create a group of people around you that you can tell anything at any time you need. After my stint in rehab, I made it a point to find those people because it was made clear to me that my life might depend on finding them. After I found them, it was my job to continue to have them in my life in a real way and if somebody didn't fit for any reason in the future, find a replacement(s). That was on me. I thought/think of it as taking preventative meds. If I get myself into a tight spot I know what to do and where to find what I need. I won't pretend to know if Anthony Bordain had cultivated those sorts of relationships during his tragically cut short life. I hope he did. If he didn't, perhaps his death will provide a learning experience as to what often happens when you don't make the effort to give yourself the best chance of survival.

On a more personal note, I always identified with Bordain, mostly because he lived life with the volume knob set to 11 in all things. That is common to a certain type of addict, of which group I fall into as well. I always seemed to experience the highs, the lows and everything in between with more intensity than others. Early in my life, I found comfort in alcohol, drugs, sex, physical exercise, food and any number of other things. As I've attempted to grow up, I had to cut out some of those things and learn to moderate others. If I didn't have my support people about me, the ones that would tell me the truth rather than what they thought I wanted to hear, I am sure I would not be here to write these words. Talk to someone and if they blow you off, find someone else to talk to. Those people aren't worth having in your life anyway. As mentioned above, it is amazing on how many people are out there that WILL listen, without judgement, and provide support in numerous ways. Just do it.

p.s. Although I know there are many ways to stay clean and reasonably free from depression, from my observations, alcohol, which is a depressant, especially at the level Bordain imbibed, is not usually the best course of action. There are exceptions but the are very rare.

What Provincetown meant to Anthony Bourdain

The TV host started his culinary career in the Cape Cod town in the 1970s.

https://www.boston.com/culture/restaurants/2018/06/08/what-provincetown-...

It was here, all the way out at the tip of Cape Cod, Provincetown, Massachusetts, where the pilgrims first landed,” Bourdain said. “And it was where I first landed. 1972, washed in a town with a headful of orange sunshine and a few friends.

Guy Fieri ruined my favorite restaurant.  Fuck that guy. Shoot on site.

(non violence disclaimer: By "shoot" I mean a bird.  And then key his car)

>Haven't seen her ever on here.. is she around?

I haven't either.  She knew him through the channels -- being an explorer Anthony was also a head -- and her name had come up in my mind.

Tony -- thanks for that post.

I don't know why him or Cobain hated the Grateful Dead so much. And stoners.

At least a few people in this thread know how to spell Bourdain correctly. Such a fucking sad day. This darkness got to give.

Here is a clip of him explaining why he hated the Grateful Dead and Phish:

And here is again mocking Deadheads:

RIP, man.

Good work there Alias. I assume an edit.

Pretty much total disbelief reading the headline this morning.  I followed all of his adventures, great human.  Fucking sucks.  RIP Anthony Bourdain.

Not an edit, I know how this thing works.

Tell me what you done it for.

No, I won't tell you a thing.

via Kitchen Conf., i've never ordered seafood @ at restaurant on a Sunday.

I learned quite a bit reading his books & watching his tv shows over the yrs. He couldn't stand the Dead :) I always enjoyed his way,

some strange shit about his italian gf, asia argento, coming to light.

I had never heard of him before; I don't watch tv.

I don't know what suicide is. I don't approve of taking one's life,

But what business is it of mine?

wow, never heard of anthony bourdain?

i guess if you’re not into food that makes sense.

>>>>I had never heard of him before; I don't watch tv.

You're not alone, Floops.  I didn't really know who he was, either.

I like to think that I'm into food: I eat some everyday.

Bad news about Asia Argento.  Sexual activity with a child?  Non es bueno.

>>>>I had never heard of him before; I don't watch tv.

Do you read books? He was an author before he was on TV. I’ll skip the “I don’t know what suicide is” part because you seem like a nice person.

Crazy shit we are finding out about Anthony and his old pal Asia Argento.

Let me break it down.

In 2004 actress Asia Argento was in a movie, “The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things” in which she played the mother of a young actor named Jimmy Bennett.

Last year, Argento was one of the first people to come out and say that they were raped by Harvey Weinstein and she is credited with being one of the people who started the #MeToo movement.

After the #MeToo movement started, apparently Jimmy’s lawyer got in touch with Asia about a sexual encounter they had when he was 17 and she was 37. The problem is that adults can’t have sex with people under 18 in California. On top of that, Jimmy said that after they had sex, that “Bennett was so traumatized that his job performance, income, and mental health declined.”

Bennet says that she got him drunk, got him alone, undressed him and had sex with him.

Argento says that he said he was in love with her since he was 12 and forced himself on her.

WELL, apparently Anthony Bourdain got roped into all of this and shelled out $380,000 to Jimmy. Jimmy and his lawyers say the money was paid due to the sexual assault. Argento says it was because Bennett was in a bad way financially and they were trying to help him out.

Bourdain went on to commit suicide, no idea if they two things are related.

>>Bourdain went on to commit suicide, no idea if they two things are related

No they were not at all. Tony was having some very very sad family problems. Who are ass holes, bye-the-way.

like what?

Like what what?

Are you pretty tight with the Bourdain family, Bluelight?

If you look at the timeline leading up to Bourdain's suicide, there seems to be a good possibility that he saw the photos of Argento being publicly affectionate with a young journalist while she was in Cannes.

Rose McGowan's public statement defending Argento right after Bourdain's suicide alludes to an "open relationship"; but according to folks close to Bourdain who spoke about it, he was obsessed with her, and people were getting worried.

All speculative, obviously.

In terms if paying off the kid she stat raped, I think there's more to come. The ironing is strong.

No I knew Anthony as anyone in-touch with the "world" should

Not sure where you folks in the mid-west how & where you get your news from-on day-to-day-basis.

Let me save you the trip.

Tony's divorce with his wife was brutally painful for him.

It involved his ODD wife using his daughter continually as pawn, which is illegal in New York, but he was trying to work with his wife.

He made it clear, that he can longer handle it. His daughter calling every day, crying. It went on for a while.

He was suicidal & 3 weeks after NYC Social workers had to get involved with media and say this has been going on for-while, It was over +

>>>>Not sure where you folks from the mid-west...

Hold it right there partner.

I’ve been pretty much a supporter or yours here while many others have called you out on your grandiose but never verified statements of being involved with all sorts of projects and knowing lots of big wigs while also posting lots of vague bullshit that makes you look like a kook.

So please, spare me the lecture based on where I live and your assumptions of me. I’m sure I’ve spent a lot more time on Long Island than you have in Wisconsin, pal, if you want to play that game.

As far as your assertion that you know about Anthony Bourdain’s intimate family knowledge because anyone in touch with the “real world” should know it, let me tell you that I’m often wondering what world you are in.

Straight Outta The Midwest

The post-coital pic of Argento and the kid has surfaced. Dude looks pretty traumatized.

Bluelight is doxxing me.

AMAZING THREAD !

I don't know if he did or did not kill himself, but I've never had such a strong intuitive feeling instantaneously hit me in regards to a reported suicide where it immediately felt wrong, absolutely beyond belief, I still don't believe that he killed himself, it makes less logical sense than any suicide I've ever heard of, I still feel strongly that he didn't do it, whether or not it's my place to opine on such matters I'm not sure, I feel like he loved life more than just about anyone, I just don't believe he did it.

Has there been any evidence that it wasn't a suicide, Bryen?

I don't know, it just seems very odd to me, I remember reading this article and it just seeming "off", I remain skeptical, I still don't believe he did it.  It's very sad subject matter, and maybe it's not my place to share my opinion, I thought a lot of him, he certainly contributed to our understanding of humanity.

From the New York Times

“The case is closed,” said Christian de Rocquigny, the local prosecutor in charge of the investigation. “There is no indication of any involvement by a third person, and we’re ready to give the body to his family.”

In interviews with hotel and restaurant employees and with local officials, a portrait of Mr. Bourdain’s last day in the medieval village, close to the German border, emerged.

Mr. Bourdain had been in Kaysersberg to shoot an episode for his CNN show “Parts Unknown.” The village has two Michelin-star restaurants and is in an area famous for its vineyards and its culinary richness.

But on Thursday night, he skipped dinner and did not show up for breakfast the next morning.
Maxime Voinson, 24, a waiter at the Winstub, a restaurant at Le Chambard, said Mr. Bourdain had dined there almost every night with his friend Eric Ripert, the chef of Le Bernardin, a three-star New York restaurant.

“They both stayed in separate rooms, and usually had breakfast and dined together at the Winstub,” Mr. Voinson said.

But on Thursday night, when Mr. Bourdain didn’t show up for dinner, he said: “Mr. Ripert thought it was strange. We thought it was strange. Mr. Bourdain knew the chef, Monsieur Nasti; he knew the kitchen. Maybe he went out and ate somewhere else, we said, but we didn’t think much of it.”

But on Friday morning at breakfast, Mr. Bourdain again didn’t show up. “His friend was waiting at breakfast, and waiting and waiting,” Mr. Voinson said.

Mr. Ripert tried to reach Mr. Bourdain on his cellphone, according to hotel staff. A receptionist then went to Mr. Bourdain’s room, where he was found hanging in the bathroom.

“This leads us to suspect that not much preparation and premeditation went into the act, and leads us more in the direction of an impulsive act,” said Mr. de Rocquigny.
