It's on the list of places I'm thinking of living during the Winter months after I retire... enough culture and services along with easy access to beaches, bamboo forests, and of course the other isles.
My brother lived in Hawaii for years, the last place he did was Kailua. Very nice town but it is very much a haole town (there's a huge Whole Foods). I liked Kaneohe the town next to it more.
The traffic around Honolulu is pretty bad but at least it's the best island for food (by far).
Nightlife....well it's Hawaii. It couldn't get worse than the other islands so there's things to do
I don't know any Zoners there, but there's a really nice guy I know through TXR who moved to Oahu a little more than a year ago. Loves our music and is a musician himself. I could try to hook you up with him if you like.
I also have a couple of longtime friends who moved to Oahu to start an estate grown chocolate company.
Hawaii has the third lowest obesity rate in the nation, but that statistic paints a misleading picture. The State averages close to 22 percent, but nearly doubles to 40.8 percent if you look at Native Hawaiians. ... According to a new Department of Health report, 1 in 4 adults in Hawaii is now obese.

You just hit the jack pot. Not cheap, was out there in June after Kauai, and it was my favorite beach we went to. Probably the most beautiful beach I've ever been to. Agree it might be getting a bit uppity but I could spend the rest of my life on that beach.
I wasn't a big fan of Honolulu but to each their own. Felt a bit like Vegas without the gambling and was a bit of a culture shock coming from Kauai. Plenty of eye candy though.
Hanauma Bay - Decent snorkeling and tons of Japanese tourists. The best snorkeling is right outside the reef but trying to get back over the reef at low tide can be a real workout. Magnum PI's place is just up the road near Waimānalo:
We found even better snorkeling at Keawaula Beach at the end of the road on the west side of the island. Can be a little rough, but amazing reefs and tons of turtles right off shore.

I don't know if that applies to the western shore of Oahu over by Waianae and Makaha.
The northeast shore between Kaaawa and Kahuku sure is sweet though.
