It's your boy at Levon's Barn. I'm thinking of going. Big fan of his solo acoustic stuff.

https://www.levonhelm.com/shows/2017/7/14/richard-thompson-solo-acoustic

He's pretty good for someone with no technique that just bangs on the guitar and bends strings.

"Smokey Robinson in kilts"*

*from an old review not long after he went solo from FAirport Convention

Mayer has been sleeping his way toward relevance for years now. I bet those sorority girls were stoked because Katy Perry's ex boyfriend turned up, more than they were excited about him. He has weird uncle hair.

Yeah, he's not bad. Glad he left the geezer band at home for this one.

oops wrong thread, sorry guys haven't finished my coffee yet

Love RT though :)

>>>>oops wrong thread, sorry guys haven't finished my coffee yet

I'm still working on my first cup too.  Late start today with a sick kid :(

I moved your post to the appropriate thread.  Once a Junior Admin, always a Junior Admin.

Awh hope the kiddo gets well soon.

>>>Glad he left the geezer band at home for this one.

just for the record, Michael Jerome is 49 and an undeniable powerhouse

And Pete Zorn was the best goddamned sideman in the business.

RIP

Might have to make this show...always been a fan , but, --from afar, id say....never seen him etc...i trust i would thoroughly enjoy it...

Hope the kid feels better, TH

I'd rather stay home and watch this than go see rt solo live if it meant driving more than an hour:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxKB1Ej8Mag

he's no bob dylan.

>>>>>he's no bob dylan.

Totally.  He makes Dylan look like me or JeffG.  Dylan wishes he was as good a writer or player as Thompson.

Lyrically I'd call it a draw or maybe give a slight edge to Dylan.

in terms of writing music, it's RT hands down

>>>>Lyrically I'd call it a draw or maybe give a slight edge to Dylan.

Thompson has way less clunkers

I imagine Dylan's wrote more songs than Thompson, that might partially account for the difference in batting avg.

I wonder how many more songs he's penned

i prefer bob as a writer. as a player, well...duh.

I'm finding 669 songs by Richard Thompson, but it looks like the list includes covers.  But he may have written more songs than Dylan.

Mr. Timpane --

If you have gas in the car, you ought to go.

Who knows how many more USA tours that old Limey can pull off?

And Happy Birthday !

Damn, if rt has written more songs than Dylan it really furthers hoover's argument.

turtle, the player comparison isn't even worth discussing.

i'm talking about writing music.

stu, pretty sure rt is the musical Highlander and will b performing for at least another century

And people call me a shill.

Has he written more songs than Ryan Adams?

>>>>>>Has he written more songs than Ryan Adams?

Probably not, but Ryan has way more clunkers than great songs.

This thread reminds me of the Beatles vs Stones thread. I mean it's always completely obvious which one is better.

People that prefer RT probably prefer grade a maple syrup to grade b, crocs over berks, panic over phish, rolls over biscuits, etc.

I've heard you say many times
That you're better than no one
And no one is better than you

grade b maple syrup is supposed to have more maple flavor than grade a

>> grade b maple syrup is supposed to have more maple flavor than grade a

Glad to hear you are on team Dylan.

I prefer Grade B syrup

I've never bought or worn a pair of crocs or birks in my life, but I like RT and Dylan. I even like DRA. Music is a good thing, unless it's Phish.

Elton John called Ryan Adams this generations Neil Young.

"Ain't So Easy Being Geezy"

Great title for his next electric band live album. A shout out to their rythym section.

Elton John called Ryan Adams this generations Neil Young.

<<<

If Bernie Taupin had said that I'd be impressed.

Jealous Words > Idiot Wind

>>>>>>> prefer grade a maple syrup to grade b, crocs over berks, panic over phish, rolls over biscuits,

I like both Dylan & Thompson, obviously Dylan more as a writer & Thompson as a performer, as for the others, I prefer Amber/Dark maple syrup, Tevas over Birks (lasted far longer & don't get as stinky), Panic over Phish that's a no brainer, rolls over biscuits usually altho it depends on the quality of both.  Those Pillsbury Hockey Pucks they shill every Thanksgiving are downright Awful, & any supermarket brand of rolls usually Suck.

RT is a Muslim?

Wouldn't have guessed that.

Since the 70s I think

What are some good RT albums to get into?  I love the soundtrack to "Grizzly Man".

Also I believe Sufi Islam is considered Heretical/Infidel by the Taliban/Al-Qaida/ISIS/Wahabbi "Fundamentalist" types.

>>>>>>Just came across this & am checking it out now:

It's a weird quirky project.  I dug it live but don't listen to it very often.  Furious E and I preformed a weird old song from the middle ages from it once.

Caught that 1,000 year thing at the Birchmere, quality playing and an ambitious project but did not connect with it.

The next year went back for a "regular" RT show and it was grand.

Used to be a UK Youtube with Dylan and Thompson performing together but it appears to have been yanked.

Timmy.......

Love ya Bro ! Rob

<<Also I believe Sufi Islam is considered Heretical/Infidel by the Taliban/Al-Qaida/ISIS/Wahabbi "Fundamentalist" types.

True.  Can't see Baghdadi as a whirling dervish.

Yeah I'd have been disappointed if I went to that "1000 years of popular music" gig expecting a "regular" show.  More like a Music School class.

Timmy prob loves it when Thompson croaks out a Britney Spears cover. The guy has got everything that middle aged white guys crave.

If Thompson grabbed some of them ol timers from Robert Plants solo band he could really pull of some sleeper shows.

Dylan's next album will be called "Gettin' Ready for the Grabeyard".

OMFUG he's doing that "Tempted" song - that's my "Worst Song Ever" top contender.  Was it Squeeze or UK Squeeze?  I really paid no attention to Pop music in the '80's . . .

It was an arrogant attempt at music that really backfired badly. What the hell was he thinking?

>> This thread reminds me of the Beatles vs Stones thread. I mean it's always completely obvious which one is better.

My wife is on team RT. WTF is the world coming to?

"he's no bob dylan."

Thompson's writing over the past 35 years blows Dylan's out of the water.  It's not even close.

And that's just the writing.  We won't even get into the level of musicianship or quality of performance.

Dylan has been riding on fumes for decades.  He will always be one of the most important artists of our times for his contributions in the 60's and 70's, but he's done very little of significance since then.

I went to Dylan\Knophler at the Verizon Center as one of my last DC shows.

MK was brilliant, and I knew MK was coming out and on the first four songs or so with Dylan.

Left after MK left the stage.

I honestly don't know how people can stay in the room with him now.

Resting on laurels to the tenth power.  Like watching Larry Holmes pound the hell out of Ali.  Emperor's new clothes.

I love Bringin' It All Back Home thru Blood on the Tracks as both brilliant writing and compelling performance. (Boomer bullshit, low t, old geezer...yeah whatever)

Individual gems here and there after that.

I mean it will always be as the songwriter that Dylan will go down as.  Deservedly.

So yeah, RT wins the performance category hands down.

That said Positively Fourth Street has the best venom of any put down song I have ever heard.

That song inspired me to try, unsuccessfully so far, to write a song that freezes the heart but is so compelling you can't not listen. BD did that with PFS in spades.

Pretty amazing to hear "You know as well as me you'd rather see me paralyzed" coming out of a radio tuned to top 40 in 1965.

Not saying he should stop, people still showing up but staying too long at the dance is not good for boxers or singers

my lousy .02

Can you guys list ten or twenty songs that blow Dylan out of the water?

That are on YouTube. I listen at the library.

Not as many great songs per album as the 60s/70s, but ol' Zimmy is still knockin' 'em, out w/ several monster tunes on each.

who was been covered more by various well-regarded hall of famer musician types?

the discography of people doing dylan would be interesting.

The Dylan songs are way easier to cover.  Also you’re conflating notoriety with quality.

am not.

wonder if Nelson band will cover 'tear stained letter' again at txr on sat

>>He's pretty good for someone with no technique that just bangs on the guitar and bends strings.

Ha nice.

I was playing with a more experienced player last week and he had me tune my guitar to open D and basically described it as just being able to bang around and bend strings without thinking about it much.  Felt liberating just using my ear and what felt right rhythmically/melodically.  Good times.

Ever mess with that cooder DADF#AD tuning?

kicks DADGAD's ass if u ask me

Just found an Alice In Chains song in C Sharp tuning. Going to give it a whirl, I still need to mess with some open E, I think some Ronnie wood faces and also Allman’s  Melisa  is in open E

not that I am any good at it. But it is a definite switch up and keeps me amused

>wonder if Nelson band will cover 'tear stained letter' again at txr on sat<

you in?

anyways, RT is not an obscure artists to most serious professional musicians.

why don't more of them do spins on his songs? they can hire good guitarists...

I'm only going on Saturday if someone meets me on Friday at the late night amen dunes outside lands after show downtown and does hard drugs with me till dawn.

Yep.  That's exactly what I was tuned to when my friend had me go into open D.

May not be "wow" to you - but this song is a top ten all time for me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0kJdrfzjAg

"A simple boy meets girl story slightly complicated by the presence of a motorcycle."

>>>>>May not be "wow" to you

That part of your post wasn’t necessary was it?  Are you that invested in the us vs them thing?  Maybe I’m just misinterpreting though.

No us vs. them. He asked if there is a consensus wow video of the guy. I'm not so bold as to believe that what I like is a consensus pick - I only know that the song crushes me with emotion and power and it always does everytime I hear it.

>> Are you that invested in the us vs them thing?

Maybe Turtle's post was just irony too - you know, not just the sarcasm and bitter negativity as it appears to be on the surface?

Thanks for your response 6.  When I read your post I read it as a stand-alone post not a response to a previous post.

how about an obscure killer RT tune?

we know what the standards are.

i admit to being ignorant to 70% of his catalogue...

>>are any posts necessary?

Depends who's posting. lol

>>how about an obscure killer RT tune?

>>we know what the standards are.

Well, slacker asked for "consensus" pick which generally means a standard tune everyone loves, but...

I'm not sure if this is "obscure" - but it's not a "hit" - however, it's another of my very favorite RT tunes and this version is POWERFUL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKi1PMU8LAM

>>>>>how about an obscure killer RT tune?

I always thought Govt Mule would do a good job with this one: https://youtu.be/zhILh20ni5w

thanks fellas.

i know stony ground.

is good. no?

i like bee's wing. not obscure but one of my faves.

Bee's Wing is a good tune. I've heard Stony Ground live acoustic - but never caught an electric version like that.

This one isn’t a barn burner or anything but it’s fun and the lyrics are funny/clever

Big Mac, small Mac, burger and fries
Sheave 'em in boxes all the same size
Easy on the mustard, heavy on the sauce
Double for the fat boy eats like a horse

Fry them patties and send 'em right through
Microwave oven going to fry me too
Can't lose my job by getting in a rage
Got to get my hands on that minimum wage

Shove it in their faces, give 'em what they want
Got to make it fast, it's a fast food restaurant
Shakes' full of plastic, meat's full of worms
Everything's zapped so you won't get germs

Water down the ketchup, easier to pour on
Pictures on the register in case you're a moron
Keep your uniform clean, don't talk back
Blood down your sh*t going to get you the sack

Sugar, grease, fats and starches
Fine to dine at the golden arches

Shove it in their faces, give 'em what they want
Got to make it fast, it's a fast food restaurant
Shakes' full of plastic, meat's full of worms
Everything's zapped so you won't get germs

Baby thrown up, booth number 9
Wash it down, hose it down, happens all the time
Cigarettes in the coffee, contact lens in the tea
I'd rather feed pigs than humanity

Shove it in their faces, give 'em what they want
Got to make it fast, it's a fast food restaurant
Shakes' full of plastic, meat's full of worms
Everything's zapped so you won't get germs

^ He’s no Bob Dylan.  Hoover is so wrong. He’s the wrongiest mongrel in Wrongesville.

Those lyrics are awful, lol. I can’t believe somebody actually produced that.

Tsk... Tsk... U people sure know how to ruin a perfectly decent Richard Thompson thread

I didn’t know he was that bad. Wow.

>>Those lyrics are awful, lo

l never heard the song; but not its not just the lyrics that are special here, its the syncopation of which spat from the golden tips of his fingers.

Honestly; I'm actually afraid to listen to it, I get so discouraged.

>>>>>He’s no Bob Dylan

yep, he’s way better

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a gypsy queen
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle all dressed in green
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle ’til the moon is blue
Wiggle ’til the moon sees you

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle in your boots and shoes
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, you got nothing to lose
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a swarm of bees
Wiggle on your hands and knees

Wiggle to the front, wiggle to the rear
Wiggle ’til you wiggle right out of here
Wiggle ’til it opens, wiggle ’til it shuts
Wiggle ’til it bites, wiggle ’til it cuts

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a bowl of soup
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle—you can raise the dead

Wiggle ’til you’re high, wiggle ’til you’re higher
Wiggle ’til you vomit fire
Wiggle ’til it whispers, wiggle ’til it hums
Wiggle ’til it answers, wiggle ’til it comes

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like satin and silk
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a pail of milk
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, rattle and shake
Wiggle like a big fat snake

Ha.  Seen and raised.

I think the wiggle lyrics are better than the Fuck McDonalds lyrics.

Significantly, and in a number of ways.

But that's just me.

Does he do instrumentals? Guitar tricks?

He fumbles around on the electric guitar and croaks out frog voices. Old white guys love it, Slack.

His acoustic playing is actually pretty good when he’s not playing Britney Spears tunes.

>>and croaks out frog voices

Maybe young white dudes would like him too if he used auto-tune?

Good Morning Friends,

Here is a nice u toob moment for you to reflect upon, on the fine Sunday morning.

That’s not RT.

How do you know? All of a sudden you're an RT expert?

Good Sunday Morning, all...is that Kermit singing?

Love that guy....
