If only Johnny D were around - he grew up using that area as a playground.
I was at those shows but as usual, only remember parts of the physical space. David Lindley and El-Rayo X opened on this date! Los Lobos was also there on the 31st.
Hillside bowl, lake behind the stage, camping and vending beyond that. It was dry, dusty, really fun, and I got lost in the Fort Ord wilderness after the show.
This 2nd set has a quality that differs from much of this year. The playing is kind of sloppy but very raw and somewhat unhinged. Obviously they reach a point in the Playin' which is pretty over the top and can only really be compared to weirdness in Dark Star from Hampton 89 (or Miami 89).
I always thought it just looked like such a cool setting for a show. Obviously there were tickets, but it looks like you could just wander in from anywhere. A friend had great recordings of the David Lindley/El Rayo X & Los Lobos sets from the 7/29 show, but they got lost when he passed away in 1998.
Day 1 I was in the front row - ridin' the rail - on particularly strong substances....
I will never forget looking uphill - and seeing a ton of freaks, boogeying they asses off in the hot sun to Jerry and GD nearly a quarter mile distance from the stage.
30 years ago today I packed my VW bus with high school friends who hadn't seen the Dead before. Pretty fun, but I had to act like the defacto shepherd for some young peeps, one of whom stole our pot and disappeared.
I LOVED that the GD came to our home town - I could've hiked to the show from my home (we used to do that for the races from time-to-time). My first ever concert was seeing the Beach Boys at the same spot.
On the 30th, they started the second set with a crazy, rumbling Victim or the Crime. Not saying that it was necessarily good, but I remember the bass being particularly penetrating for that one. Always nice to have a double encore as well.
One adaptation that was made from the previous year was that they put some speaker stacks partway up the hill. I remember in '87, the only speakers were on the stage and it was frickin' LOUD up front.
