Crust Punks Invade The East Village

Forums:

The scourge of Crass t-shirt wearing, Germs listening, drunken Crust Punks are making the affluent, post-gentrification citizens of the East Village uncomfortable!

"It’s getting worse now than it was before,” said Tania Martinez who lives in the East Village. “Me paying a lot of money being here, I shouldn’t see things like this.”

Fucking crusties.

Threads like this sure make me miss mike W

So true, E.

MikeW warned us about this, but nobody listened. Now, even the beloved crusty punks aren't welcome in NYC. Who will ask us if we can spare a dollar or a schwill? Who?!?

I love these guys. I see them at all the Hardly Strictlys and we kick it next to them at Jerry Day.

I first saw them on Telegraph around ‘91 and thought about being one but the music sucks.

Slacker, I disagree about the music sucking. Although the below bands may not strictly qualify as "crust" punk bands, any crusty punk worth his vest has surely rocked patches from all of these legends.

Crass brings me back to 1984, when I was introduced to the song, Asylum, by my punk friend:

I am no feeble Christ, not me
He hangs in glib delight upon his cross, above my body
"Christ, forgive!" Forgive?!
Shit, fuck, I vomit for you Jesu. Shit forgive
Down now from your cross
Down now from your papal heights
From that churlish suicide, petulant child
Down from those pious heights, royal flag bearer, goat, billy
I vomit for you! Forgive? Shit he forgives!
He hangs in crucified delight nailed to the extend of his vision
His cross, his manhood, violence, guilt, sin
He would nail my body upon his cross
Suicide visionary, death reveller, rake, rapist, lifefucker
Jesu, earthmover, Christus, gravedigger
You dug the pits of Auschwitz, the soil of Treblinka is your guilt, your sin!
Master?! Master of gore, enigma!
You carry the standard of your oppression
Enola is your gaiety!
The bodies of Hiroshima are your delight!
The nails are your only trinity
Hold them in your corpsey gracelessness, the image I have had to suffer
The cross is the virgin body of womanhood that you defile
You nail yourself to your own sin
Lame-arse Jesus calls me "sister"?! There are no words for my contempt!
Every woman is a cross in his filthy theology, in his arrogant delight
He turns his back upon me in his fear; he dare not face me!
Fearfucker. Share nothing in Christ, sterile, impotent, fucklove prophet of death
You are the ultimate pornography, in your cuntfear, cockfear, manfear, womanfear
Unfair, warfare, warfare, warfare, warfare, warfare, warfare, warfare, warfare
Jesus died for his own sins, not mine!

I love Crass. Can't remember when I was introduced (probably '91 by the older, punk rock chick in Jr. High I was into at the time), but I've never lost my appreciation for them.

Crass was a very different type of punk than the SoCal stuff like Circle Jerks, Descendants and Agent Orange.

That's for sure, although I have love for all of those bands as well.

I always thought of Crass as almost like a political/social movement rather than just a band. They were promoting something much bigger than just a political message. Some punks, obviously, adopted that and went on to live radically anti-capitalist/anarchist lifestyles, which is what I think a lot of the crusty punks are still approximating today.

Have to admit it brought me joy to see that article this morning. It's 2018, and punk rockers still somehow (despite the last 25 years of Hot Topic co-opting), have to power to offend people.

There’s a not so subtle irony to what’s going on. Punk was born just a few blocks from there.

For sure, and I read 'CBGB' was turned into 'TRGT' at the grand opening of the East Village Super Target last week, iconic lettering and all.

I'm guessing the next great musical subculture comes from some place like Dayton, OH.

The John Varvatos store?

Target apologized after the locals freaked out and after they promised to never clean the men’s room in honor of CBGB’s everyone calmed down

I believe it's actually a different location (again, where is MikeW when we need him the most), but here's the story:

Edit: Bucky in first with the story, well done.

Thanks man it’s easier getting these NYC stories since the Daily News fired everyone. I want to thank Hilly and Dee Dee for everything they did too those guys didn’t buy their shit from Target btw.
