My dad is visiting and went out to dinner & step mother proceeds to add a portable pack of Crystal Light Lemonade to the water and gives it to my dad. I proclaimed it was "outside food" & she kind of shrugged it off, but admitted that she forgot to "ask".
He's a type 1 diabetic and tries to avoid diet soda, but this is the first time I've seen him do this.

My dad now also uses a portable oxygen unit when visiting me at high altitude; in addition to his insulin pump / monitor, and other testing device. So he has a few things to keep track of when we sit down to a dinner table at restaurant ... so it appeared as if she was just trying to be helpful. However, I couldn't help but wonder if she was also kind of taking the initiative; knowing my dad may have been hesitant to do so while visiting me.

Well, that's kind of the thing ... it's not exactly like bringing in one's own side dish or desert (other than a bday cake), but given how drinks often yield the greatest margin why should a packet of powder be any different? I can see how the owner would likely not make a big deal about it, but still see what's happening.

Was Crystal Lite on the menu?
Was Crystal Lite on the menu?
If so, 2 issues arise:
1. It is cutting into the establishment’s margins
2. You’re taking your father to dinner at a dump that serves Crystal Lite.

No, it wasn't on the menu.
No, it wasn't on the menu. He explained to me earlier today that he now carries it around with him because he no longer drinks iced tea due to an irregular heart beat. He's been a type 1 diabetic since he was 20 years old (currently 78) & has been extremely good at watching what he eats; however, as you've alluded to, CL isn't exactly a good "healthy choice" ... but can see why since he avoids sugar, caffeine, and alcohol.
So, after learning a bit more, I view it more akin to medical "need" of sorts vs. frugality ... in a similar light as him always carrying around some kind of food in case he needs it.

Having said that, there used to be a restaurant operator at the base area in the Telluride Mountain Village who would regularly patrol his patio for "outside food". I'll never forget how he shook his head and wouldn't relent re: someone with Down's Syndrome who had brought his own special lunch to eat with his family ... even with parents pleading that he had particular dietary requirements.

This OP is so confusing...
If it was sugar-free Crystal Light, which isn't noted, there's nothing contraindicated about using it while diabetic. There are poisonous sweeteners in it (aspartame, acesulfame potassium), but they wouldn't affect his blood sugar.
Was "No Outside Food" posted? If not, why would you care? And if it were, would you object to adding Splenda or Stevia or another artificial sweetener to tea or coffee?

Ok, restaurant owner chiming
Ok, restaurant owner chiming in. I try to take the high road on "outside food". If everyone else in the party is eating my food and drinking my drinks I try to be accommodating. I strive to keep the long lost art of customer service alive and well. The crystal light wouldn't bother me. There is a reoccurring issue here that I had never seen or thought about (only been open for 20 months). We have a surprising amount of old mostly Asian ladies that ask for hot water and than proceed to use their own tea. I sell hot tea. They get offended when we charge them our regular tea price. My server still has to get them their hot water and my dishwasher still has to wash the cup. If it didn't happen so often I wouldn't mind.

I read the OP but didn't read the word Lemonade. I don't know what Crystal Light is, I've never had it and even though I looked at it on Google, I never noticed that it's Lemonade. I don't know what I thought it was.
So, I can see how the question of bringing in an outside "food" drink occurred to "FOM".
Thanks, Ace High, for speaking up from the owner's point of view.

Thank you for sharing your
Thank you for sharing your perspective KB. I think your general approach is good, but I can also imagine how you see all sorts of things like this happen over time and some of them (like the tea) might be necessary to draw a line. I suppose I find it interesting just where that line gets drawn for issues that aren't "make or break" sort of activities, but could be interpreted as pushing the limit.
My dad never tries to take advantage of anyone, but I couldn't help but wonder if he'd picked up some "frugile habits" like this living in South Florida where simply being around a lot of elderly people on fixed incomes might have rubbed off a bit. However, after yesterday's conversation about it, I'm convinced it's primarily due to health concerns.
Yeah, sorry judit, guess I assumed everyone knew what Crystal Light is... although when I stop and think about it, I'm not exactly sure what's in it beyond aspertame and that it's supposed to taste like lemonade! It's amazing how quickly and accurately my dad can tell you how many carbs are in any given food item, but he definitely kinda drops the ball in so far as artificial sweetners.
We all ordered a full entre and had and appetizer, but none of us had ordered any drinks, and being a small town I know the owner who's very hands on in the operations ... so was kind of curious if the CL would've been something of note from her perspective.

I would be more concerned
I would be more concerned about the aspartame and other research chemicals in the "Crystal Light" rather than the moral / ethical carbon footprint.
You could just ask for a few Lemon slices and squeeze that into the water, try it some time.

Tell the owner's who complain
Under federal law, diabetes is a disability when it substantially limits one or more of a person's major life activities, such as eating or caring for oneself. Even if diabetes is currently controlled by diet, exercise, oral medication, and/or insulin, and has no serious side effects, the condition may be a disability because of limitations in the past before it was diagnosed and treated. Diabetes is also a disability when it does not significantly affect a person's everyday activities, but the employer treats the individual as if it does, such as assuming a person with diabetes isn't qualified to preform a job. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the determination of whether an individual has a disability is made on a case-by-case basis. The ADA applies to all states.
