as a moderately anarchistic non-fan of dead and company

Forums:

They play so slow - it hurts!

Do you like Pennywise? They play fast.

they were playing bertha on sirius the other day, recent deadnco tour.

w/o a doubt the worst post dead band there has been. mayer plays dead like he's playing/singing on one of his shitty albums. really awful stuff, cringe worthy.

Not a fan his his albums because pop and blues ain't my thing

but his guitar and vocals together in this band equal any other dude doing both. They all sound different but the same. Not Jerry.

i haven't listened, its not good?

Not really, Turtle.

AND they played Corrina the other night - which is never good.

He's no Zach Nugent when it comes to true heads with soul.

Zach is pretty darn good, imho. I'm glad he plays around here very often.

Would you be ecstatic if he played Vermont's biggest arenas with Phil for $85 per ticket?

Vermont has no arenas - but I would pay more for Phil and Zach than I would for Phil and TFB.

my buddy is doing the whole summer west coast leg. i will tell him not to bother.

Meh-yer's guitar playing is becoming more integrated with the band, and the Dead 'sound', but his vocals sound like some barnyard animal in heat.

>>his vocals sound like some barnyard animal in heat.

And that's the nice version of describing it.

Thinking about possibly hitting the gorge but can't imagine tripping with John Mayer on the stage.

It's slow, GD ultra-light-  we get it.

Some old-schoolers are happy to catch a close-by show for fun, and Mayer and Co. is bringing in "the next generation", who are enjoying Jerry's killer songs and are used to modern ticket prices (hafta' admit I'm NOT). Would all the whiners be happy if Bobby was just sitting home counting his money and all we had were the dozens of local "corpse-humpin'  tribute bands"?

Oy.

(Hey Sixer)!

>> my buddy is doing the whole summer west coast leg.

I have a friend from HB doing the same. He's a druggie.

>>>>>>his vocals sound like some barnyard animal in heat

Hes ‘s channeling Donna like the Mayor channels Pigpen.

>>>>>>Would all the whiners be happy if Bobby was just sitting home counting his money and all we had were the dozens of local "corpse-humpin'  tribute bands"?

Probably.  I know that’d be fine with me.

> He's a druggie.<

my guy doesn't drink or smoke...just doses...

I'm not saying I'm a big fan by any stretch- left the Orlando show early last February and I won't go farther than my backyard and a cheap ticket to get in- but somehow I'm glad this is still happening. It looked like the SPAC show was packed a la '83 the other night.

My buddy snorts doses and then smokes DMT....very successful guy, ironically.

>>>>>>>>his vocals sound like some barnyard animal in heat

>>Probably.  I know that’d be fine with me.

Yes, if Bobby is going to play it this way - he might as well stay home.

Now look at that - Hoover and 6 agree on two things in one thread.

Mayer's vocals are equal to Grahame's, MFRJ's, T-Ham's, JK's and all others.

Almost went to Camden on Saturday,  but Weather did not look good.  Turned out that second set was rained out (2.5 songs & done).

Lawn tixx were $40 in the lot;  $3.00 r/t train fare on the "River Line".  So reasonable enough,  if Weather had been nice.

I'm OK just tuning in on the mixlr stream,  although that  doesn't come with the light show.

I really don’t understand why anyone would listen to streams or tapes or not change the channel if it comes on Sirius. If money is tight don’t go. If you have to travel don’t go. But if you have the cash and they are near by and you go with less than zero expectations -  there may be a few moments like Oteil singing China Doll that will pleasantly surprise you.

Hang out with friends, enjoy seeing people 35 years younger than you enjoy these songs, bring your SO who kind of likes the dead but will hate you if she ever has to listen to Unbroken Chain again. Enjoy being in an audience that isn’t 75% male. Enjoy the energy that 10,000 people dancing brings.

I remember a conversation at the 82 New Years shows where the guy I was talking to was all about how he was looking forward to the year 2000 show and even though I was 19 at the time I was pretty sure there was no way that band was going to make it to the year 2000. Yet here we are in 2018 with what I consider an embarrassment of choices.

You want 80’s sing along dead with EDM drums space go see Dead & Co

You want 70’s dead go see DSO

You want jazzy, jammy, uptempo dead go see JRAD

You want to hang out in a small club with Phil doing whatever the fuck he wants to do that night that is available too.

Never in my wildest 1982 dreams did I think this ride would still be going in 2018.

>But if you have the cash and they are near by and you go with less than zero expectations -  there may be a few moments like Oteil singing China Doll that will pleasantly surprise you.<

If I'm going to listen to GD tunes, I'll listen to the GD. It's  not zero expectations,  it's zero interest.

The band only made it to 1995  just a bunch of cover bands since then

> snorts doses<

is that a thing? how does one do it? why not eat it?

You can bump crystal.  If you have nothing on the schedule for a week out it's not all that bad of an idea.

But I'm guessing Ned was just making a funny...

i'd prolly snort some right now.

i need to escape reality.

Not really in a position to comment on DeadCo (haven't seen them), but I would like to point out that Six is a known communist sympathizer.

St. Marks alter ego...(we always knew he was a super hero, now, the truth is revealed)

takes the after work edge off i hear...

Don't forget to eat your peyote and boot some silly cybin.

>>He's no Zach Nugent when it comes to true heads with soul.

I always thought he sucked with JGB.  YMMV and shit and it's all subjective, mann.

I think DeadCo sound good, I like Mayer in the role he plays with a lot of humility and it's fun , for me anyway. Plus they get better w each tour IMHO.

Cracks me up when those who have not seen a band live , rag on the band. Big difference between couch tour or hearing one cut on Sirius. Different strokes for different folks.

Zach Nugent is not that good maybe the worst to play in JGB w Melvin. I do love the tone of his Tiger replica and he plays Promontory Rider though

A lot of humility...what does that mean...Dude tries way too hard to be liked....from the bullshit Althea story to the letter to Jerry before this tour..he is the Tom Greene of the GD scene...

band music does exist.

dead n co represents that perfectly. as does the family band. everyone's happy.

Humility with regards to knowing he was an outsider entering our community and is aware of it and appreciates becoming a member of the community over time.

His little speech after NYE show in 2015 is a good example.

Different strokes for different folks. It's all good.

^ Just about right.  Worth a $90 ticket about once a year or so, for me anyway.

So the kid with the Irwin guitar knockoffs is Zach Nugent?  I saw him with Melvin in a club in Asheville summer before last.

Other than the fact that he played Promontory Rider, he pretty much sucked.

I very much enjoy like this musical outfit.  Perhaps folks with young daughters can't get over the "John Mayer" they have previously known.  Didn't he write that cotton-candy tune "I Wanna Hold Your Hand."  Yes, boy-band garbage.  Terrific guitarist.  I have not enjoyed a post-Dead band more than this one.  (Due respect to the short-lived "Q.")  In my mind, Dead and Company is better than Jerry Garcia Band.  Go on...I'll wait...tell me about some old jazz asses or Linda Ronstadt or Lynyrd Skynyrd or whatever pile of crap is "definitely and obviously better."  I believe there's some resentment resulting from the tremendous success of this band, as compared with Rat Dog, Phil and the Family Band, etc. which, for some reason, never achieved popular success, even among deadheads.  Now, tickets are more expensive, venues are larger and that private function feeling is gone. Previous incantations of post-Dead bands were just sad to me.  I'll keep listening.

What he said.

And too many butt hurt whiners on this board pissed that Bobby and the drummers are having more success without Lesh than with.

>>>>>>And too many butt hurt whiners on this board pissed that Bobby and the drummers are having more success without Lesh than with.

lol

Name one

<<<<<>>>>>In my mind, Dead and Company is better than Jerry Garcia Band.

haha, what?

<<haha, what? >>

I said "In my mind, Dead and Company is better then Jerry Garcia Band."

Wut?

better than jgb? jerry garcia band? damn, right on man. that's crazy.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste....

Saw live Jerry Band shows whenever I could,  '80's & 90's.

In my humble opinion,  the Music sounded better compared to DeadCo.

Still have not caught D&C in person,  but their light-show looks awesome.

Anthony, respectfully, did you ever see JGB play? Like, with Garcia?

Trolling

(crazy?)

I've seen JGB with Stu and Jimmy. They were hot.

image_359.jpeg

In my mind, Dead and Company is better than Jerry Garcia Band.<<

Wow. What else is going on in there?

************************

Is it me or do some actually seem to get slower after they get going?

That said,  I heard a Mexicali jam that sounded pretty good all around (6/9, maybe?).

Wow.

A bunch of dead and co fans have arrived!!!

 Welcome my brothers!!!!

Who is going to Queens tomorrow?

I will be calling the shots at the drum circle at the sausage stand near section 312.  Stop by and say hello!!

Somebody needs to come and take “Anthony’s” ass away. Guy has lost his marbles. Did you actually listen to dead and co play deal? I mean Mayer can’t even hit the melody right when he’s singing. Shits embarrassing man. This guy is supposed to be a professional musician and he’s up there fishing for notes and not finding any answers. Then on the solo he can’t figure out something melodic to play so he tries doing a half assed buzzsaw that’s in a faster tempo than the whole band because they play songs at a motherfucking snails pace. Then you’re just left with this big mashed up peice of rubbish that these guys call “deal”. Terrible stuff man

I sort of agree with what Timpane said,  but my local snails are much faster.

Organic diet and Clean living is the reason.

I saw Jerry Garcia Band numerous times with Jerry Garcia (forgot they still play, though I saw a Melvin thingy advertised).  Also duet with Kahn several times, Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band. It's not a casual call for me to make.  Garcia Band played about thirty tunes in the course of the thirteen years I was seeing them.  Tunes like 'Don't Let Go' and 'Deal' got cooking very well.  I enjoyed the gospel covers, traditional tunes, Dylan covers (though Jerry's lips don't move fast enough to sing 'Tangled Up In Blue.')  The thing that post-Jerry bands lacked for me was the power of Grateful Dead which is, essentially, a rock and roll band.  Yes, I was a little punch-drunk with the afterglow of Dead and Company, Hartford, but there truly is some great energy with this band.  They're increasingly shaking up the set-lists a more adventurous way than Jerry Garcia Band (I could pretty much tell you the song options and placement of a Garcia Band show before entering the venue.)  Mayer is not a blues guy, he's a rock and roll guy. There is, of course, the compelling argument that Jerry Garcia Band had Jerry Garcia.

'Still Dead' --

You create almost plausible stories,  but it is all absolute Bovine Fertilizer.

Can you actually build and run a Still ??

I doubt it.

You never ever went to a Jerry Band show,  silly sock minkey.

Your mama & papa were still in grad school when Garcia passed away.

I picture  you as an articulate,  yet slow 14 - year old person,  residing in a comfortable suburb of Rochester.

Ha ha.  "Disco," you may indeed be older than me.  Only homosexuals and grandmothers recall disco.  I suspect you are the former.  I picture you as a 63 year-old guy, tending your flower boxes in Saint Pete.  Only your mama;'s picture and that of your first Pomeranian are on your window sill.  I saw my first Grateful Dead concert in 1982.

No Pomeranians here,  Nick or other troll.

You never went to a GD show except on TV.

Oh wait.  This has to be ( insert fake Manson imitator ) from the Village.

Gay - bashing is considered inappropriate behavior on this forum.

It's a Safe Space for people of all persuasions,  even Communists.

so anthony thinks dead n co, w/ their limited and very predictable repertoire, it's more powerful and less predictable than 80s/90s jgb.

some real good L going around nowadays. that's awesome. dude must be a mickey fanatic or something. fucking crazy.

Stilldead playin' the homophobia and ageism cards - all he's got?

In our family, we use "still dead" to refer to folks who weren't born yet at the time being discussed.

There is nothing "homophobic" in there, you racist.  Sounds like I hit a soft spot.  Not all I've got by a long-shot, Don't get your Depends all in a tangle.  I realize the idolatry that Garcia inspires.  I understood it was a risk.  It was you, Disco Stew, who initiated ageism (yes, like racism, it flows in both directions).  I think Kreutzman and Weir, along with their newfound friends, get it on together better than Jerry Garcia Band.  Schitzu, Stu?

This ¿°^ has too much punctuation to be a Rochester troll.

More like a jr. with a speedy batch of the p-dope and itchy little fingers.

OK,  good dialogue there. Maybe I am an old gay dude with Shizzus and Poms,  watering the Flowers,  collecting my fat Social Security check;  but at least I'm not a DeadCo. apologist.

Fair enough, Disco Stu.  I hope you are enjoying whatever music you're into these days.

Confirmed: It was the drugs.

It could be the drugs...I had the pleasure of experiencing Bear's acid twice.

"Deader than thou" rarely works in these parts. It's all about scoreboard.

Bands I will listen to again, after the show:

JGB: 1

D&Co: 0

It's really about the jealousy and envy of me being an 'out-of-the-closet'  Wood Faerie,  while some individuals are still self-repressed.

And how do you know that it was "Bear's acid" exactly ??  What color was it,  just  curious.

Anyway,  I'm over your gay-bashing already.

You'll be lucky to make it to 38 and not need Diapers.

My (off-brand) Deepends are constructed with the late-70's Green Pyramid Gels as part of the absorbent Weave.

deadnco acid is better than bear's acid. fact.

I get it, Stu.  You don't care for Dean and Company.  I got the acid from Mr. Stanley.  Anymore, kids don't care for real acid.  They enjoy the "light," more like a mild pill.  Here's my resume.  You commie pinko whores.

>>>>>deadnco acid is better than bear's acid. fact.

Dunno 'bout that. I think you'll need to supply all those reading this with sufficient supplies of both - then we'll vote.

If we can still comprehend the question.

p.s. I'll keep in mind the Green Pyramid Gels, when the time comes.  Thanks for the advice.  Godpeed.

the mayer prints are fire. 25u. face melting.

What job are you applying for?

Great suggestion, Surfdead.  Let's throw some science at this!

This cracks me up.

Has to be Chef Bill;  who else would reference Highgate,  Worcester & Boston on their  Curriculum vitae  ?

I went to those Springfield '85 also;  nice pair.

Posting the shows you've supposedly been to?  Really?  I want scans of your ticket stubs. LOL

Though the terms "better" and "good" are very subjective, I think the vast majority of Grateful Dead fans would prefer to see Jerry on stage in any band than Dead and Company.

I don't think that's gonna happen anytime soon, so until then I will appreciate Dead and Company for what they are.

And they are, at least at times, pretty fucking "good".

here's mayer jetting to the next grateful dead show on his private jet..... with that fuckin guy haha:
